NYU Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think last year a lot of people were informed on May 12 about their acceptance off the waitlist.

yup, i guess it's about time this thread was started. so some people heard may 12th last year? i guess we're on hold for a few more weeks, then.

Ohhh yea.

I'm banking on getting in off the WL or another year of applying....

me too...i just sent in a letter of intent, for whatever it's worth...show me some loooooove NYU- i've had a distinct lack of it this cycle. 🙄

ewww thats grimey... that might not be enough time to w/d from other schools and get the 100 bucks back. 👎

Just to fill yall in. I am an accepted NYUer, and I received an email from them today asking for my final decision, and they even listed the other schools I have been accepted to so all schools must know now where you are holding acceptances. Anyways, i figured if they are pushing thei accepted candidates to decide now, maybe waitlist movement will be in the near future..i will be withdrawing my acceptance from NYU, so there is one down

just to add to the optimism:

1) they've been handing out fin aid packages, which for two sdn-ers have been just about all loans. so expect more withdraws.

2) a couple years back, nyu seemed to be making changes in how they do admissions. things might still be in flux, and so what they did last year might not indicate what they'll do this year.

I withdrew from NYU recently. I also received an email asking for my final decision. Best of luck to those on the waitlist.

I read in an adcom post once that schools are allowed to share information about their acceptances and whatnot after March 31. It shouldn't surprise you to see those emails include your other acceptances...

Best of luck!

now that it's may 7, i feel like it's time for a bump?

anyone know approximately how many people get in off the waitlist?

Hey guys, my friend was accepted of the waiting list today. So start checking your emails.
Good luck

do u know what time he/she got the e-mail?

I was accepted today too!

The e-mail was at around 1 this afternoon. I've been going nuts since then, and I don't know what I'm going to decide yet🙂 But the waitlist is moving🙂

Got the email today!! But I'll be turning down the spot. I really want to be in NYC, but I just got off the Columbia waitlist on Tuesday, and that's my first choice. Good luck everyone!

May is so much better than March.

Congratulations!! 🙂

congrats, you guys. that is SO GREAT!!! :hardy: 🙂 😀

does anyone know if anyone gets rejected post-interview? or is everyone who is not outright accepted thrown onto the WL?

just trying to gauge how realistic it is to hold out for hope... 😕

im starting to lose hope - if u look at last year's waitlist thread, not a lot of acceptances after the first wave on the friday before 5/15

does anybody know if the may 15 rule applies to NYU or have all the accepted students already replied? would there be another big movement next week?

not according to last year's thread

Sent in my withdraw letter yesterday, which was really hard because I love NYU so much! I hope the spot goes to one of you guys!

does anyone know if there will be more waitlist movement in the near future?

i would call, but all of my past attempts have been fruitless.

ladykae, what have they told you when you tried to call? i'm considering calling and asking about WL movement...maybe early next week.

i was only told that they had started taking people from the waitlist, but that she couldn't give me any more information than that...sorry, i know that's not very helpful =(

hey everyone. I got an acceptance email at about 1pm today!!! The list is moving!

Likewise, I got an acceptance at 1:03 pm today!

I have to decide between Duke and NYU now. Very VERY tough decision for me...

any thoughts?

So sorry pj,

I will make my decision as soon as possible, within the week I promise, if NYU will actually get me my financial aid package already...

Also accepted today. Seems that they are taking people in bunches every so often, so keep hope alive. Anyone have any thoughts on NYU vs. Einstein? Who really puts any stock into primary care rankings anyway?

good luck

im just joking around dmg18, good luck with your decision! 😀

go with personal preference. both schools are very comparable in terms of the training and doors they'll open.

Bellevue wins out for me.

I would probably go with Duke. My wife is in NYU and its great. Duke, however, is more prestigious. Either way you can't lose.

Wait, im not sure I was clear enough in my previous post...YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE CRAZY TO TURN DOWN A TOP TEN SCHOOL LIKE DUKE!!!

versus jacobi (in the *bronx*)? i doubt this.

nyu's location is the winner for most people, but it will depend on just how much you want to be in the hustle-and-bustle of the city (some don't).

einstein's housing is the winner for all people. spacious apartments instead of cramped dorms with coed bathrooms, and it costs half as much. einstein overall comes out a bit cheaper (but not enough that it should affect your decision much). you should expect basically all loans from both schools, because that's mostly what they offer.

I spent all of 2006 summer at NYU, and Bellevue really is a Mecca of patient cases. When I interviewed at Einstein, I liked that it was a predominantly Puerto Rican population, but I still thought Bellevue was more diverse and exciting (I guess it's a matter of opinion).

I agree that housing is great at Einstein from what I saw, but NYU also offers some affordable housing in the dorm WITHIN the med ctr building which is VERY convenient...

I realize it sounds crazy for some people, but my personal goal is to ultimately practice in a city like NYC, which means going to school in NYU would be a big advantage. Then again, I'm sure I couldn't go wrong with whatever specialty I chose at Duke, because they're pretty much strong in everything.

I've posted a poll, and although almost 80 % so far say Duke, there are some people who have said NYU and for reasons I'm considering heavily.

a downside to einstein's interview day is that they don't go through any hospitals. did you get to go to jacobi? for emergency medicine residencies, some residents on scutwork.com mention that bellevue has a tougher time getting trauma cases, since the surrouding area is pretty nice and the fire department takes people to the closest hospitals. it's probably a similar deal for complex emergency cases (which the poor tend to get due to untreated disease). but i'm sure bellevue, being a county hospital, gets good (i.e. poor patient) transfers from other emergency departments in the city. there's a classic trade-off you find with schools in many large cities with several hospitals: nice surrounding area => less medically complex patient population. it seems to apply less to bellevue because it's a county hospital, but i suspect it's still there.

einstein's housing is right across the street from the classroom, but i agree that if you like to go to class in your pajamas nyu would let you do that easily.

sorry for getting this o.t.

duke or nyu will both get you in nyc for residency. if you're sure you want to be in nyc, i'd weigh them both the same there. if you'd like to go west coast, duke might give you a leg up for competitive specialties. maybe.

I have a friend who was doing a rotation there and we had lunch at jacobi. Didn't get to go around the hospital much, was just judging from first impression.

I see what you mean about the tradeoff though, but I did see a lot of poor patients at Bellevue.

i guess really the only advantage to being at NYU would be that I'd stay in a place that I love, rather than risking to go to a place that I'm not sure I'll love for four years (although, judging from my limited time at Duke, I DID love it, but I have to go again soon to make sure...)

i've only been to chapel hill for a few days. i really liked the scenery, outdoor opportunities, mild climate, and college town atmosphere. of course there won't be as much cultural stuff that you *could* do as in nyc, but 1) that's true basically anywhere in the planet 2) you'd only need to "tough it out" for four years 3) you only need one movie theater, a few bars or music venues, and a dozen or so good restaurants to keep yourself occupied as a busy med student for four years. i'd only weigh the difference in location heavily if you're really into museums, opera, plays, or clubs (like you go there a few times per month) *and* you think you'll be able to continue doing this stuff actively as a med student. that's how i'd look at it.

Chapel Hill and Durham are very different from each other and not all that close. If you go to med school at Duke, you will be serving/living/going out in the durham area way more than chapel hill area. Location for me is a very important issue in terms of being happy and comfortable for the next four years of our lives. Both student bodies from my impressions seem to take full advantage of their respective areas' cultural/recreational activities throughout all four years of medical school. Both areas also have their own advanatges so it is back to a personal choice haha, keep us posted on what that choice is OP 🙂 .
