i am planning on getting a new cell right before starting dental school,
and i m debating whether i should get a pda phone..

when do u start using PDA? from D2 or D3?
how often do u use it,
and what do u use it for?

thx.

excellent question, im switching cell phone plans right before dental school, so i would like to know as well.

You don't use it in your 1st year, I hear you use it in your 3rd when you get to the clinic or 2nd year. its basically used to store info. about drugs, I believe.

However, I love my treo ever since I got it. One thing it is useful for is keeping your schedule all in one place -- in your phone because here at nyu, every week has a different schedule, basically. so it helps keep your organized - not just for d-school but personal things to.

I put some notes in mine and would be studying if I was out commuting or something.

I hate my treo. I don't use it as a PDA (acutally kind of upset that NYU makes you buy one for D1 year -- just so you can get used to using it) and the phone part of it is a pos. I'm not usually one to complain, but this requirement really irks me...

But, just because I think the treo sucks doesn't mean you can't get something completey awesome. And if you don't mind dishing out whatever kind of green your carrier requires for the data plan it becomes a handy little device -- especially in the city! HopStop on your pda? AWESOME! Just not for (Verizon's) $40/month...

Would an iPhone fit the bill?

doesnt the device need windows mobile or palm OS? i dont think the iphone uses windows mobile.

I would go for something that has a phone/pda/wifi/windows mobile, all in one!
Treo has it?
I think MotoQ has all of these features. Or maybe it doesn't have wifi, like the samsung blackjack.

Hi,
I will be in D2 from this June (AP DDS)
My question is do I have to take data service for the PDA or is it just used for storage?
If any of D2 and D3 and D4 student read this post, please reply.

Thanks a lot

To the people wondering what smart phone to get:

It HAS to have PALM OS!!

Apparently, thats the only operating system that handles that pharmacology software you'll use D2-4.

bUT HONESTLY, I would say half the class didn't get one in D1. I don't know about D2.

whats the name of the pharmacology sf?

i read that there is a technology class where they check to see if you have a compatible laptop and pda/smartphone. and that they "force" you to buy it if you don't have one. since half of the class didn't buy it, that isn't true right?

by the way, i don't want palm OS. freaking NYU.

i've been using a blackberry pearl for a while now...does that count?? i love it (it has media, MS office veiwing abilities, email, etc...)

If I get accepted I'll be getting the pearl if it's ok. My brother had the motorola Q in the bay area (california) and said it was junk. Same with the iphone. Great if you want all the bells and whistles, not so great if you want a phone. I've played with the pearl a little bit and I might be able to figure it out after a little bit. Either the pearl or an actual palm since it's 90% the same thing.

let me set the record straight, u will never use it in D1. now it will be very helpful to u if u have a pda to put your schedule on it because you'll be like the other 100 ppl using paper to check their schedule, so you should get it in d1 to have less stressful schedule problems. D2 u take pharm and you will need it for the drugs but for d3/4 its vital to put your patients schedules and for the drugs. just get a treo phone, its popular like hell at nyucd almost everyone has it, and the drug software/schedules are also compatible with windows ce not just palm. as for people saying they force u to buy stuff, the only thing you are forced to get is a laptop and nothing else.

thanks for clarifying.

Does the pharm program for the pda's need to use the touchscreen for full functionality? The reason I ask is that I have a treo 750 and the touchscreen works on and off for me and I dont really wanna dish out more money if I dont need the touchscreen. It might be a hassle without it but if I can get by then its all good.

guys use Windows Mobile PDA, if you know your computer you will know how to use the phone. I've got in September blackjack, thats awesome phone, easy to use, has a lot of features. However I was told that the best PDAs are DELL cause they have better processor and more RAM.
