OB rotation difficulties

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
🙁

I'm sorry to hear that you're not having a very good rotation.

Some questions:
1) How does your rotation break down? How much time is spent on GYN, how much is spent on L&D, how much is spent in the office?

2) How many other students are with you on this rotation? Are they all 4th years like you, or are some of them third years?

If there are third years with you on your rotation, you could offer to teach them some stuff that they haven't learned yet. For instance, if they haven't had surgery yet, you could teach them how to scrub in, how to tie knots, how to write a pre-op and a post-op note. These are all things that are equally important for GYN surgery.

Even if the other students are also 4th years, you could also ask your residents if it would be okay to put together a presentation for the whole team. Based on your previous posts, it looks like you're interested in psych - so presentations on things like post-partum depression, or what kinds of psych meds are contraindicated in pregnancy, or how to manage the antepartum care for heroin addicts are always welcome.

Good luck on the rest of this rotation!

You're luck it got better for you by the second week. I am still hating it and I'm on week 4! The attendings are rude, and they ignore us, the residents ignore us also, and talk to us like we are scum of the earth. The nurses are mean and make us feel like we are in their way ( and by in their way, I mean sitting in their seat because that's what they all do all day!) The scrub techs b**** at us because they can get away with it. It is the worst rotation I had so far!

At least it's over now, right?🙂
It was my least favorite rotation as well. Most of the attendings I worked with didn't even acknowledge any of the students. The residents usually just got up and left the resident lounge without asking students to folow them or telling students where they were going🙄. I had to just follow them in case they were going to scrub for surgery or round on patients, but sometimes, I followed them into the bathroom. But a few of the attendings seemed to try to go out of their way to teach students and to make us feel at least a little bit included.
My rotation did get better as it went on, sorry yours didn't.🙁 But personally, I think that this rotation will make any future unpleasant rotations seem a little better, I can always think to myself. "well, it's better than OB/Gyn was."

I'm glad to hear it got better. That's one rotation that you either love or hate. Everyone's overworked and irritable in general, making life as an MS miserable.
