Obesity lectures

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I dunno about that

Ours were given by someone who, herself, quite obese. Which was awkward. I can't imagine giving six hours of lecture on all the terrible things obesity does and simultaneously being 100 lbs overweight.

I love these lectures because afterwards the fat girls feel super insecure and depressed and smashing them is so much easier.

Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think. Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know.

Dang, I hope the BURN lecture is next.

how many visibly obese students do you have at your school? I can only think of 1-2 out of ~170 in my class. but weight issue is not as simple as "eat less and exercise more." people who have never struggled with weight will never ever understand. haven't you taken biochemistry, endocrinology or behavioral science?

Where do you live? I'll do it depending on location so I can get a free trip.

Ugh. That's just sick. One: not every fat person is a lazy POS. They could have lost 50 lbs before coming to school and just have more to go. They could have an injury and gained while not being able to exercise. I'm sorry but the ole eat less exercise more is not some golden rule that works on everyone. It's more complicated than that.
Two: taking advantage of a women's insecurities in order to sleep with her is disgusting. Not only does that show no respect for her but it's a great way to land a reputation as a douchebag.

Railed another porker last night. Not my finest hour boys, but as my pops used to say, "any port in a storm, little Ark." But don't worry brahs, I stole $50 from her purse after she was passed out. Justice is served, mang.

(Ok, in that statement I trolled for once).

There's one fat woman and one fat man in our class. The fat dude comes off as a sort of abrasive guy, but the fat chick has a heart of gold and is very kind. I feel bad for her.

For what it's worth, learning about what obesity does to people has galvanized me to eat healthier. 🙂

And have that clown make up on ......... that will scare the **** out of everyone.😱

I can't wrap my head around how guys can do this. Whether it be self esteem issues a woman may have or knowingly with a gold digger.

I think their motto is "where there's grass on the field, play ball."

+1

I remember reading this in misc (srs)

Have you even seen the charts that show the massive increase in the obesity rate over the past 30 years? "Struggling with weight" is a recent phenomenon and it's the epitope of a first world problem.

I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces.

Ah the old play to the emotions "You know people have problems which make them be obese."
No one denies this, except that it's the overwhelming minority of people. I can say " We should all feel sorry about people that fail out of medical school because of traumatic life event X that happened to them." And yes there are a certain percentage of people that fail out due to terrible circumstances. However they aren't the majority.

This is like the gluten-allergy thing which has exponentially grown in the last few years. Anyone who has worked in a food related job recently can attest to this. I swear 1/4 of the population is allergic to gluten now. It's like going to a thai restaurant and saying you are allergic to peanuts.

Obviously many overweight people have made bad nutritional choices. But a lot of your patients are going to be overweight. A lot of people period are overweight and obese. Pointing out hey look at the fatty fat fat what a horrible person helps no one.

Honey do you even know what this means?

Lol, I looked it up now that you mentioned it. I suppose it was an inappropriate idiom for this situation.

But I mean, my point still stands. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. If girls ain't "mirin" you (as bodybuilder's would say, from what I've been reading on their forums), then you gotta go after gold diggers and insecure women I suppose. 🙁

I agree but at the same time we have to point out the inherent irony of an expert in a field failing to exemplify even the basics of it. Maybe they specifically have an illness responsible for that, but law of large numbers say that most of them don't. I know significant amounts of people that will not have a physician that is obese. Their choice, I know but I feel it's pretty strongly justified.

You love to talk about lifting and fitness stuff

I think the quote you were looking for was "18 to 80, Blind, Fat, or Crazy." or one of it's several variations.

That's pretty bogus. You can be an expert in researching obesity and still struggle with obesity. People are human and losing weight is NOT easy, particularly if you've been overweight you're whole life.

Physicians, like most people, do a crapload of unhealthy behaviors. They smoke, they drink too much, they smoke weed, they don't take their medicine, they don't keep up with their health. In fact they are horrible patients... But no one craps on them because it's not as obvious as weight.

Yup, it's totally one or the other.

If someone can pass medical school and doesn't have any illness that would predispose them towards obesity, I'm pretty sure they are capable of losing fat. (I prefer saying losing fat, because "weight loss" is a useless term IMO. My BMI is over 2x my BF %) Think about this: Would you want a personal trainer that was heavily (no pun intended) out of shape? I'd think one would be even more cautious about their physician. I'm not saying the doc has to look like Arnold in his prime either. Just something reasonable.

I feel like you are equating fatness with being stupid. I'm not sure what makes u think that being qualified to be a doctor makes one inherently better at becoming/staying thin. While you may be very fit (good for you) it's not easy and there is no perfect formula for everyone. If there was, a lot less people would be fat.

A personal trainer's job is to show you how to exercise and be fit, so of course I wouldn't want one that isn't fit... A physicians job is medicine, to keep you as a patient healthy. It's impossible for any person, let alone a physician with their job constraints, to be an example for every single health rule so no I don't care if my physician is overweight or smokes as long as they can tell me how to be healthy. Is a surgeon only good if he's had surgery himself? Can you be a good doctor if you smoke?

Heh, I've smoked cigs before, but it's gross and I don't see the appeal. I don't get how peeps get addicted to them. Marijuana, on the other hand...

Buying my ticket to Colorado right now haha

But I'd still tell my patients not to. I also love smoking hookah occasionally... Something that isn't particularly healthy, but hey you got to live a little

I hope I never wind up with a doctor who views insecure human beings as objects to take advantage of like this.

I hope I never wind up with a doctor who hits that haterade like I used to hit the beer bong back in undergrad.

Damn, I miss undergrad so much. I was so carefree and innocent back then...

I'm calling bull****. You are way too neurotic to be a smoker

I hit the hookah with some frequency, also I know some dudes in my class who have a hookah and regularly smoke it. My Physio tutor smokes cigs regularly iirc.

Your logic is invalid

I didn't want to smoke cigs, but I was drunk and my friends coerced me into it. It was gross and disgusting. I haven't smoked since.

I used to smoke marijuana regularly precisely because I was that neurotic. It calmed my racing mind down. Temporarily.

Wait, what? You think someone must be "carefree and innocent" if they think it's disgusting to take advantage of insecure humans? I think this type of behavior is what I would expect out of high schoolers and immature undergrads, and it's pretty appalling that it still exists among the med school population.

And no, I'm not a naive undergrad. I'm a career changer post-bacc.

Sorry lady, I wasn't attacking you. I just miss undergrad so much. Med school kinda sucks. 🙁

Ok, it sucks a lot. I wish I had done CompSci.

But in any case, when you get to medical school, just remember that you're going to school with alcoholics, drunken meatheads, and club girls. Except they have brains and a work ethic.

No I'm equating it to dedication. I don't think medical school is easy for too many people. Therefore they can show a certain level of effort(that I consider pretty high) to become a physician, I feel like they can do the significantly less amount required to not be obese.

I never said they have to do everything possible and be perfect. You just extended what I said in an effort to make it seem unreasonable. There's a clear difference between being drastically overweight and subjecting oneself to normal human indulgences. Obesity isn't a small nuance on a checklist that we're nitpicking. It's essentially the biggest health threat to the modern world. That overweight trainer could show you how to exercise and be fit, so why wouldn't you want him/her? Someone can have individual indulgences such as smoking, however being obese or not is a much broader state that they should probably have a clear distinction on which side is professional.

You are assuming that one's dedication to studies (which I'm assuming is the dedication you are implying medical students) spills over into other areas of their life. You can be dedicated to studying medicine without dedicating yourself to losing weight or even eating healthy. I have one med school friend who is at least 50 lb over weight and another who might be more. Both are brilliant, both are not slobs and don't really eat differently than me... Your way of thinking is kind of horrifying and I'm glad residencies and the majority in medicine don't share your views because both matched into some baller residencies. Being obese is NOT unprofessional. Just wow

That's fine, but in reality, perhaps they should be eating differently. Or exercising more. Or both.

At the risk of offending the overly-PC crowd, most people who are overweight have little to blame but themselves. I am absolutely not calling them bad people, but there is an alarming lack of accountability when it comes to obesity. And, most people who say they are "eating healthy" are, in fact, not.

I would say an aspect of studying medicine is applying it in your own life. The easiest way to show you understand something is to apply it yourself. If someone doesn't have the determination to carry out what is necessary to lose fat(still assuming no conditions of course), how can they expect a patient to? It's funny because the same groups that justify this being acceptable, are the ones that say the primary barrier to obesity is education. Alright, so then why are physicians ever obese? I don't think many would argue they have an improper or incomplete understanding of the causes of obesity. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Either it's due to education(which I think is false) or it's due to people being irresponsible about their health. How can you possibly empower your patients if you struggle with the same things they do?
