I went and checked. There are still openings for OBLC this summer for people to do before starting dental school If interested go to your MODS account and follow the instructions.

👍

I wish this was an option for me (Navy), would love to get it out of the way before school rather than during a summer or afterward. Hope some of you guys jump on this.

imho, it is best not to do oblc before or during school. it's best to do it after graduation.

here are the reasons:

1) you get an extra 45 day adt for pay. 1 after 1st year,1 after 2nd, 1 after 3rd, 1 during 4th, then oblc after graduation equalling 5 45 day adt's.

2) if you go after graduation you go as a captain instead of as a 2lt, thus slightly more pay and respect from the privates at ait (the last part is a joke)

3) after graduation, your oblc counts towards your active duty obligation thus you shorten your stint by 6 weeks (doesn't sound like much but when you approach your obligation end it is huge. it could be 6 weeks of private practice earnings.

hope this helps someone!

That's crazy that it only counts toward your ADO after school but not during or before. 😱

You may want to check on the '5 ADTs' w/ USArmyHPSP - I would think they would track and limit it to only 4 - but I could be wrong. I would think the HPSP book on the MODS website would also have information on this.

The advantages are:
1) You get a chunk of money prior to starting school - helps with expenses and getting started while you wait for stipend and sign on bonus to kick in
2) Potential of starting specialty training earlier (if slots from previous year are open)
3) If you are not doing specialty training, you will have some time between when you graduate and when you have to report to enjoy your summer before coming on active duty (get married, back pack through Europe, sit around and be a slob, etc...)

you're right!

it's actually, 4 adt's and 1 tdy (for oblc) which essentially are the same for pay purposes.

it's because after graduation, you're doing a tdy en route to first duty station, while before graduation it's considered an adt.

seems like a no brainer to me, unless you want to specialize in comprehensive dentistry, perio, or prostho in the army right after graduation b/c slots tend to open up at the last moment for these residencies. sometimes the army can't fill these residency slots or people drop out at the last moment. you rarely see this in endo, pedo, omfs, ortho. i'm sure you can guess why.

imho, i think it's no brainer; if you can do it before, you should by all means.

1) while oblc, imho, a great training and fun, i would never want to do it again, and i am glad i got it done with before, while i was relatively younger and healthier. among other things, summer in san antonio was fun (the alamo, riverwalk, etc) but it was also hot and extremely sweaty. i loved shooting m16 and m9, but i hated the fire ants in camp bullis and having to wake up at 3 am for formation and wait until 8 am to actually do stuff.

2) you start earning salary in the summer, not in the fall. you will be getting the full salary as 2LT with benefits and privileges, BAH II, BAS, earned leave pay, etc. no matter how you do the math (as i did) you make more money than do it later. please prove me wrong.

3) you still get compensated for the "missed" ADT. because oblc counts as 1 ADT, you would continue to be earning stipend throughout the year without ADT. so basically, oblc, 3 ADTs plus 45 days of extra stipend.

4) yes, you would be earning captain's salary if you do it after, but it's not much more considering other benefits.

5) having done oblc, you could start working immediately after you graduate. i think this would be the single most important advantage. otherwise, you have nothing to do btw graduation and the middle of june for oblc. you could have other engagements and things to do during that time period, but i'd much rather start working right away and bill toward my service obligation and make money. btw, when you sign up for the $20k bonus after you get your license, that in and of itself would extend your service obligation for a whole year to run concurrently with the existing obligation. so if you decide to take the bonus, which many do, in your last year of hpsp service obligation, you are not discharged until the anniversary of that bonus (typically in the fall or winter). so, in that scenario, it's irrelevant when you start your service in the summer.

6) you get to meet many high ranking army dentists-mostly O6-and have a chance to get to know them, ask questions, and have a better understand of what army does and how it operates.

train to save! :laugh::laugh::laugh:

on point 5)

my dasp (a bonus) actually was dated from the time i started oblc. therefore, i received my final year's bonus and finished 6 weeks earlier.

6) yes, i learned so much from these O6 dentists and got to know them. as a matter fact i met some generals too and i learned so much from them and got to know them.
as a matter of fact, i met a lot of ait privates and got to know them and learn from them about the army too.

correct me if i'm wrong, but you are qualified for the old 10k bonus and the new 20k bonus only after you get your license, which often much later after you graduated. those bonuses come with 1 year service obligation, so if you take it during the last year of hpsp payback, you still have time left to serve even after hpsp obligation is over (by a few or more months). so at that point, whether you did oblc or worked in the summer is irrelevant.

huh?

get a license before you start oblc. for example, graduate mid may, receive license by late may or early june, start oblc in early june (there are states that process them quickly around two week or so). thus, you will get bonus processed with a date which corresponds to start of oblc at your first duty station.

If you're dumb enough to wait on your license that long then that may happen. I had my license in hand before I checked in at my first duty station, and in the Navy, failure to obtain a license by a certain time (12-18 months) is grounds for separation and recouping cost of education.

I'm pretty sure the Army wants you licensed ASAP as well.

Yes, but you could only apply for a license after you have your diploma in hand in a state like NY, and some schools distribute diploma no earlier than July. So in that scenario you could only get your license some time in August or later. If you start working in June, well, you're already two months behind, and some people would have to put in 2+ months if they elect the bonus in that case. Of course, not getting your license 18 months after graduation is just silly.

that's amazingly fast. do you mind sharing which state does that?
