For some reason this was cool to do in high school, but seems a little off to do now? Med school admissions seems to be a more touchy issue.

I just want a cute hoodie!

Nothing wrong with school pride and the feeling of accomplishment just don't overdo it. I became the guy with the sweatshirt, car sticker, stethoscope on the rearview mirror. Don't be that guy/gal.

Wait you wore med-school hoodies in high school? That would be pretty obnoxious. I always kind of laughed inside when I saw my college classmates with med-school apparel, but honestly who really cares what people think of your sweatshirt? Sport it if you want. You definitely won't be the only one.

Pshh... wearing a hoodie with your school name isn't bad at all. Unless you never wear anything else. Or wear multiple school brand apparel at the same time. We'll know where you go to school from the sweatshirt: we don't need your beanie and your matching sweatpants to remind us :naughty:

Anyway, get the hoodie 👍

I had classmates that wore t-shirts of medical institutions where they did research. I thought it was pretty cool. I think if you have some sort of connection with that school it's not weird but to wear HMS shirts and you have never been to Boston is really weird.

Also, I wouldn't wear my sweatshirt every.....

You forgot about the matching white coat, nalgene bottle, and ID/keys dangling from a lanyard draped around the neck, all sporting the insignia of course.

No, haha I just wore an undergrad name/logo hoodie in high school. We even had a day where everyone was supposed to do this, etc.

The hoodies I'm looking at now aren't even medical-specific, but they prob will garner comments as to whether I'm going to that medical school.

I won't be that gal until I am officially an MS1 😛

I'm lucky because my undergrad is the same place where I'm going to med school. So if I wear my sweater no one asks or think it's weird.

At least they don't tell me.. but no one talks to me....🙁

Anybody need a friend?

Be the person to wear a Harvard sweatshirt, Yale sweatpants, and Hopkins hat. When people ask about it just say you're still deciding on the three/waiting for the best scholarship.

Sophomore year in high school, people wore whatever school they hoped to attend.

Senior year, they wore the sweatshirt for the school they were going to go to.

Would I wear medical school gear before medical school? Nope. It would just be weird and would take too much to explain it to people. I will just buy the stuff when I am there. If I had actually done something associated with that school, like someone mentioning research above, then I would totally wear it. But otherwise I wouldn't.

I don't want to come across as a pretentious d-bag.

I'm guilty of looking forward to rocking some school apparel.

Nothing wrong with a hoodie, shirt, and sweats...Just don't wear them all at the same time. 😉

Decals are cool, too, if you're into that sort of thing.

If your med school has an undergrad, just get generic (non med school) apparel with that design/logo. You will still have your cute hoodie and can take personal pride in your school, but you don't run the risk of getting badgered by everyone that you run into on the street about their personal medical issues.

Buy shirts everywhere you interview and rotate them.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing a school affiliated hoodie if you go there. I'll definitely be getting a hoodie wherever I go 😀

Ultimate plan:

1) buy hoodies for every school accepted at
2) call ESPN and have them host a one hour special ( entitled "The Incision" )
3) announce that you're taking your talents to Boston
4) profit

And to answer the question, it's not obnoxious as long as you don't overdo it (as stated above). I received a med school t-shirt as a congratulatory gift but I won't whip that bad boy out until after I am officially an MS1.

I bought a hoodie after I got accepted to grad school for public health last year... I probably wore it too much, and some friends jokingly gave me a hard time about it. Honestly though, I just got lazy towards the end of the semester and would pretty much just wear a hoodie and running shorts to class. Oh well...

haayyyyyy guurrrlllll

omg it is like TOTS OBNOX lolol.

I'm definitely wearing my med school hoodie as I casually stroll through the undergrad campus.

I'll be like, "aye girl."

Seriously though, I am looking forward to wearing my med school gear, but I think that I will end up wearing more stuff with the generic undergrad logo than anything with "School of Medicine" written on it. Maybe an SOM hoodie though...

I knew a kid who wore a Harvard Medical School shirt every once in a while.

Will totally be purchasing some apparel soon...

On a side note, I noticed a totally different vibe in the two undergrads I attended. The first (Super large/popular state school) everyone wore swag all the time - like most did every day in some form or fashion. - I must have had like 15 different shirts. The second school (Top 10 Ivy) students dressed more fashionably and rarely sported printed swag. I remember buying like 3 shirts when I transferred. One of my friends later on was like "Man, you sure were a lot of those." It just wasn't the thing to do I guess.

I tend to wear lots of swag from schools I haven't attended. Some of my sister's old high school t-shirts, shirts from a UG in my friend's hometown, my boyfriend's UG sweater, and then swag from my own UG and master's schools. Usually concurrently haha. And generally universities that are rivals.

Large state schools are usually NCAA Division I powerhouses. Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, Tennessee Vols, Arizona Wildcats, UConn Huskies, Texas Longhorns, Cal Bears, UCLA Bruins, Oregon Ducks, etc. They sell a lot of apparel because of their sports fan base.

Ivy athletics? lol

I thought the stethoscope on the rearview mirror thing was something nurses do.

I wear t-shirts of every school I've attended or done research in. I don't see a problem with that.

I'm lucky that all my school apparel (UG and med) will be the same....but I refuse to wear more than one school related item at a time. That would just look ridiculous.

I'm going to med school at a rival institution and would feel like a traitor to my UG buying the generic undergrad stuff from my med school. How much of tool would I come off by sporting the SOM sweatshirts and t-shirts? I don't want to be that guy.

An excuse to dress like a slob under the guise of "school pride". **** yeah.

At my UG you definitely could not get away with wearing our rival's colors, even if it said SOM on it. Save it for when you're attending. Or maybe your rivalry isn't as intense. I went to an NCAA powerhouse, so we took our school pride very seriously.

I think SOM shirts are a big mistake to begin with. It's impossible not to look a chauvinist and you run the risk of having people come up to you with all kinds of medical questions. I have NIGHTMARE stories about this and stopped doing it as a result. It's just not worth it.

As for generic UG apparel in your situation. That's tough. I thought about it briefly when I was accepted at our rival school. I decided that I wouldn't be wearing anything related to the new school (SOM or otherwise) if I attended. I didn't end up going there or I might have changed my mind along the way. I doubt it, though - I'll always hate that school 😀

At our med school we stuck with our undergrad allegiances. You didn't wear the color of your rival even though that was your new school.

A lot of us refused to sing The Eyes of Texas like we were supposed to at graduation.

Thanks for the input.

I'll stick with my UG stuff. I agree that the SOM stuff can be cringe worthy.

The downside to all of this, I can only get away with wearing my UG stuff a few times a week.I was hoping if I had another school to add into the mix, then I could get away with wearing sweatshirts and t-shirts all the time without getting **** for it.

A guy can dream.

If you don't have any ties with that school, wearing their hoody would be super silly.

Were I to run into someone with an article of medical school attire, I might be inclined to say to them, "Hey there sir or madam, are you affiliated with the institution whose title you bear?" And if they would reply to me, "You bet I do my friend!" then I would respond with something like "How delightful, shall we go and purchase some malts and pass the time with banter?" But if the answer was, "Well no, but I really want to go there and I'm pre-med," then I might reply, "Ah," and take my leave.

Then again, pre-med shirts also come across as pretentious to me, despite their chronological appropriateness.

I proudly wear my Princeton School of Medicine shirt all the time.

My UG had only freshman who would wear stuff with our school's logo on it-- and they didn't mess around. They'd wear the complete ensemble with the logo- sweatshirt, sweatpants, gym bad, umbrella, flip flops. They looked ridiculous, considering how much our school charged for those clothes.

So I will definitely not be tricked out in clothing with my SOM logo. I think it looks immature, like stating, 'Hey, look, I got into med school. Please come over and admire my accomplishments.'

I feel like I'm going to have the problem of wanting to wear undergrad apparel so badly (especially since I have so much of it and love my school). I mean, I could probably go nearly two months wearing stuff with my undergrad on it (but I have yet to do that and won't).

I agree with the whole NCAA division 1 powerhouse thing--my undergrad is in that category, plus it's famous for other reasons...and people wear apparel all the time to class, propagating its sales/usage.

I'll probably want to get a shirt/hoodie from my med school (partially to combat the dozens of stuff from my undergrad) to show school pride (maybe not with "SOM" on it)--which is especially possible now that I'm not applying to any rival schools. 😀 It'd be too much to put on say, blue and maize, and not feel like I was betraying my undergrad. 8)

I'm surprised that people put this much thought into what others will think of the clothing that you wear 😕 If you want to wear a SOM shirt, just wear it. You're never going to please everyone and chances are that you're already doing something that someone somewhere thinks is "super douchey."

People wear sports team apparel all the time and it's not obnoxious. However, what are we taking pride in here? Grown men who play with balls, get paid an insane amount of money for doing so, and take it way too seriously.

I love sports, but if we show so much pride in our favorite teams, why would it be obnoxious to take pride in something that actually matters, like our medical schools?
