These people are quite annoying. You know who they are: they can often be found sucking up to the dean or running for meaningless class officer positions of this or that. For some reason they think they're better than other people. Well, if any of the people I'm describing are reading this, here's a newsflash for you: YOU'RE NOT BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. So get off your self-erected pedestal and be friendly to everyone.

I normally see the nerd-y classmates doing this, not the clique-y ones. At least in my neck of the woods, the clique-y ones stick to their own little group.

Here at MCW, we have a group of 6 girls who apparently all went to Purdue that sit in the exact same order in the exact same spot every day. If somebody sins and sits in their spot, which I believe some people do on purpose, they all pick up all their computers, chips, bags, coffee, notes, books, flashcards, and other unmentioned varitables and move to place that has six seats in a row that are open. We call them the "Stepford Wives". shhh! I think they're robots.

Aside from that, you know who are the cliqueyest students in our class? The older students. You'd think that they would WANT to hear my perverted version of glycolysis.

You mean your class hasn't basically picked out where people sit yet? That was fixed for us by the second week (first week M2 year). I was late for class today due to an appointment today, and I was a little annoyed to find that someone actually took my spot. But that guy is usually a floater around the lecture hall anyway.

Everyone picking up and moving is a little extreme though.

i'm a floater! it wasn't by choice...I'm just perpetually late so I didn't really get to pick out where to sit. i was surprised at how quickly everyone staked out their territories. There are certain "clique" areas of the classroom where I'd never sit, even if there were empty seats, but for the most part, it seems very open and friendly. I gotta say, switching seats the first few weeks of class was pretty fun--it lets you meet more people anyway--but I'm planning to settle down soon and stake out my own seat for the rest of year.

I was a floater too. I started out sitting in front of the class, mostly not to fall asleep. This worked pretty well until I realized that the person voted "Most likely to blow us all away with an Uzi" was seated behind me. I had to move closer to the door in back and out of his line of fire. This guy also liked to discharge flatus after lunch which was not good. I definitely needed to be upwind in a hurry.

I then discovered that no matter where I ended up sitting, when my Genetics professor spoke, I was asleep within 3 minutes. No amount of caffeine could overcome his monotone voice. Again, I headed for the back of the room on the other side of "The Crazy Guy" and where my head would not make as much noise when it hit the table. (Thank God, I don't snore but serveral of my classmates did and very loudly). We took turns launching spitballs at them when the noise got too loud.

My last resting place was on a chair in the back, next to the door where I could get a nice breeze from the hallway and play "Drug Wars" on my PalmPilot without being disturbed. I could also place my feet up on the back of the desk in front of me, slump down in the chair and happily plan my "retirement to a desert tropical island".

FakeDoctor's got some more recent posts, all of which are great.

Yup - med students precipitate into cliques. Don't sweat it. It's not a popularity contest. Find some fellow kiddos that are productive to study with (that is, they help each other out and learn together, not try to out-compete you) and have fun with them. I'm personally amazed at how seriously people take class officer positions. Honor code (dealing with cheating) IS something important, but president? Unless they're talking about changing the curriculum, nobody cares.

Given the scatological possibilities of the term, I find it hilarious that people are calling themselves "floaters."

I'm a floater, I never fit in with any of our cliques...

The gunners

The Bible thumpers ("Evolution is just a theory!")

The study nerd girls ("Sit up straight! Take good notes! If you get a B, you'll be grounded for a month!")

The self-appointed class leaders (The ones that always spam your email box with SIG stuff nobody reads)

The stoners (AWOL after the first couple weeks or so... yet they always kick ass on the tests. How??)

The non-trads (Get me my cane. Those punk kids in the next row need a whuppin', believe you me)

The frat boys (Let's go out after class and toss the Frisbee!)

The tragically hip (Oh, how we suffer for our good looks!)

The mud-phuds ("Enough with this rubbish about 'patients'! Why don't they talk more about the non-enzymatic cleavage of protein ABQT-65b in conditions of lowered pH??")

The, uh, women of less-than-fair appearance (sorry, I know I'm a horrible person for saying it, but they all DO group together for some reason)

The self-segregated racial groups (no comment)

The anti-social loners ("Insects. They are all... insects to me.")

... oh wait, judging from all that, maybe I do fit in with that last one! 😱

Why, I beat me some impertinent whippersnappers just the other day.

I shift around a little bit, but yeah, we've got some pretty fixed seating arrangements. I'm not sure about those Stepford Wives though - although I do know of some crews that all sit together.

we call them free agents, but 'floater' has a nice ring to it...

There are some girls in my class that a few of us refer to as the Stepford Wives. Mostly because they always look like they just stepped out of a J. Crew catalog every single day no matter what. And I don't think they are ever behind in studying. Most are married/engaged. I'm thinking they must take speed or something to keep that up every day.

I TOTALLY want to hear your perverted version of glycolysis. Come sit up front in the gunner's row! We'll make space for you.

Doesn't this behavior seem so high schoolish. I remember kids doing this in high school.

Yeah, my school is a bit cliquey . . . mostly because most of the kids went to the same state university for undergrad too so they all know eachother. There are a few cliques that I think are the girls who are from the same sorority I think, lol. I so thought the whole frat/sorority thing would be long gone by medschool but I guess no such luck in the south. But everyone is really friendly so I don't mind it too much, and there are enuf of us outsiders that we are all friends now.

Hey, wait a minute! I'm one of those "girls who are from the same sorority"! 😛 Don't be hating on us that we have something in common. 😎 I mean, med school is four years, but Greek is forever!

Of course, there's also my membership in the cliques of--"people who did Camp Tiger last summer", "people from the same geographic area", "people of the same undergrad", "people of the same grad", "people who share the same unusual hobby", "people who know people from one of the aforementioned groups", "people who study in the seminar rooms"... 😉

This is indeed very sad. Really sad I must confess. It is a pity👎 👎 👎

I always sit in the front, because otherwise I can't see well enough to read the powerpoints. Seriously.

You and I are sisters of the blindness. I need to go get a new glasses prescription now.

There was no hating 😍 It was just a bit intimidating to arrive at school and realize that most of your classmates already knew eachother. I've made plenty of friends now so I don't feel too left out anymore. I'm just not from the same geographic area as anyone, not in a sorority, don't study in the seminar rooms and couldn't go to camp tiger cause I was stuck out of state from Katrina, so I guess I was just screwed, lol.

surebreC Stupid is also forever

Sheesh! Has med school taken away any sense of humor you had, that you can't recognize a little sarcasm and kidding? 🙄

Psipsina and I are classmates at the same school. And after the week we had last week that included the entire class getting a stern talking-to from the course director about our gross practical grades, we need some humor!

This just begs for someone to have some fun with these folks! See if you can get a group together and play with their heads. You could even get a professor in on this one. 😀

Hey soco, just so you know, thru the grapevine that is New Orleans, I found out that Shwartz gives that same lecture to every first year class after the first exam. Not saying we didn't do abysmally, but its not like our class stood out in our abysmalness . . . made me feel a bit better about it 😳

The M1 psych lecturer doesn't call it MCW High for nothing, but that class is nearly done.

I'm a more 'mature' student in my MBBS class (my classmates start their med program around 19) and would love to hear your glycolysis version. Apparently anything that isn't perverted doesn't work for me. Cranial nerves will be stuck to my head indefinetely

heard the kama sutra version of krebs? the USMLE first aid version is too tame.

As for annoying, obnoxious people in the class -- yeah, they are there (I can count at least 3 off the top of my head); I was going to blame it on immaturity but after consulting with a classmate we all agree that its 'insecurity' issues...sigh, when do these people learn to grow up?

Ive been told many a time that med school is no different then highschool in terms of how classmates act etc.

This is somewhat true, although I haven't dealt with this too much at our med school. As far as lectures go, we have straight PBL.
