OChem2 over the summer in 8 weeks.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I took it at Pace (NYC). Expensive but totally do-able, you'll get a good grade. Labs are scheduled for 5 or 6 hours but really only take 2 or 3 hours max. Register early coz the spots go fast!

Labs are separate, so I would just be taking the class. Even more doable?

I did it. It will test your will to live, but worth it. Didnt retain anything but did good and I got to laugh at everyone who had to take it all year. Dont plan on having much of a life either. Its only 8 weeks though. Youll live.

Again, it will be OCHEM2 in 8 weeks (compared to the normal 15 or so weeks).

I will have already taken OCHEM1 during the spring semester.

I was going to try taking the 1 & 2 over the entire summer, it was going to cost me a small fortune so I decided against it. I think you should take it during regular semester, there are way harder classes then O-Chem and you will walk away with a much greater understanding of the class. Everyone talks about how hard Organic is but it is definately dooable, with a full load. I took O-Chem II, calc II, cell, and spanish at the same time and did well. Organic is mostly bark not that much bite.

I forgot to mention that I want to take it during the summer so I can take the DAT in August. If I wait and take OCHEM2 during the fall semester, I will definitely be too late for the application cycle. So, I just wanted to see who had taken it over the summer (in 8 weeks (better than 5 weeks)) and what they thought of it.

you might be better off just taking the DAT earlier in the summer, or spring if possible, and submitting your application. i felt that the material in the DAT orgo section was considerably easier than the summer class i took.

that way you can just take orgo in the fall semester. just a thought is all =)

So, if I don't take OCHEM2 before I take the DAT, how am I supposed to do well on that section?

You can't take the DAT without taking OCHEM2, can you?

well there is stuff from both orgo1 & 2, but i felt that with what you learned in orgo1, you could study on your own for the rest of it, u know? like which reactions lead to what outcomes. it seems like destroyer is a particular favorite of some people, so that might be enough?

can other ppl respond to mkasu's question too? and if they think destroyer might be enough to make up for not taking orgo2? i'm just thinking this because some schools allow you to replace orgo2 with a biochem course instead.

Did it. Doable. As long as you don't plan on doing anything else. A couple of people dropped b/c they were taking another class or trying to work. If all you have is that class, though, I think it's a good way to go. If you take the DAT right after taking O-chem you'll likely excell on that section. Good luck.

I took OChem1 at Colorado State, ummm, a while ago, during the summer. I was a single mom working at the rec center part time and I got a B...I loved it and for me it was way easier than GChem. Assuming you're younger, smarter and not a single parent...you should do fine.

As far as taking OChem 1 this summer in 8 weeks...I took it ummmm, a while ago....at Colorado State. I was a single mom, worked part time at the rec center and am no chemistry whiz and I got a B. Took some focus, but the class was great and I actually retained a lot...13 years later.

Assuming you are younger, smarter and not a single mom and working, too...you should do just fine.

i wonder if i can answer your question again, only word it differently...what a dork...can't even manage the enter button this late at night😳

A ton of people do, and get great scores. KAPLAN has everything you need anyway.

Btw, the Pace class lasts 4 to 5 weeks per session (varies based on what day you start) so you finish Orgo 1 and 2 in a little less than 10 weeks. If I remember correctly, you don't have to take the lab but you need to let them know that when you register and also tell the prof on the first day. But since you are supposed to get a combined grade (roughly 75% lecture exams, 25% lab notebook, all averaged into a 5 credit class), in my opinion it's to your benefit to do the lab as well since the class portion is so abbreviated that lab was sometimes where certain concepts were better reinforced... plus you will probably have the same prof for lab and you'll get to know him/her much better that way. Neither prof I had gave lab exams or formal homework so you probably don't have to worry about that. Also the lab notebook counts for 20 to 25% of your overall grade, which means if you're getting Bs on your exams you're easily bumped up to an A for the course as long as you're keeping a decent notebook.

Even though you won't retain nearly as much info from a summer course than the year-long sequence, I still think it's enough for you to get the basics of Orgo down, and if you can supplement the basics with the Kaplan book or any other DAT study aid you should do ok on the Orgo section.

I took ochem I and II over the summer and finished in 6 weeks. It was intense but worth it. It prepared me for the ochem section of the DAT. Our class was m-f, 9-12p, then lunch for an hr, study for 6hrs, goto bed, and start all over again for 6 weeks. I really liked ochem so I didn't mind doing that. also it is easier to get an A like that then it is to get an A if you have to study ochem for a whole year.

I took O Chem I & II with labs during the summer. It was definitely the hardest I worked for a class, but I liked being able to focus completely on it. If you aren't taking lab, no problem. Easily doable. Why wait? Most dental schools require O Chem II. Why take it after the test, when the knowledge won't help you (for the DAT). Why go through the hassle of learning it yourself if you have time to take the class before the test? When I took it, I hadn't taken a Chem course in 5 years and I managed to get an A. You'll do fine. Think of it as a little trial run for the intensity of dental school.

The reason people take the DAT w/o the second half is so that they don't have to wait and apply a year later. And if they suck ace at chem then their GPA will be higher and then they only have to pass the second half. I would advise poeple to do this. DAT in June, ochem 2 summer if you are in that situation rather than waiting another year.

Ochem 2 on the DAT is nothing compared to the class!

If I take the DAT in August, I will be OK for that cycle, right? I see some people saying you need to take it in June, but I think August is the earliest I will be able to take it.

You'll be fine taking the DAT in August. Just a good idea to submit your AADSAS application before you actually take the DAT's.
As for taking Orgo in the summer: I know for a fact that a lot of dental schools look down on this (even more so for Organic that if you were taking bio/phys over the summer- mainly because out of the pre-reqs, Organic is most indicative of what dental school classes are like). I understand that your reason for taking it early is to be prepared for the DAT's. But it's something to consider. They really like to see you take all your pre-req's, especially Orgo in the regular school year with a full course load of classes.

I took DAT on august cuz i took orgchem 1 during this summer too.
i'm taking ochem 2 right now. its totally doable and yes its ok to take
dat on aug.

I took orgo 2 in the summer. I did fine, just felt like I didn't learn the material as thoroughly as I would have during a regular semester term. Anybody can do it....

Any recommendations where to take the class?

Has anyone taken ochem1 or ochem2 over the summer? If you have, how hard is it to do this?

Thanks

I took OCHem I in 6 weeks and Ochem2 the following 6 weeks back to back this summer. I also worked 40 hours/week. It was hard, but worth it. Studied all weekend and everynight. I also took the DAT in the middle of it last July. Also recommend that because Organic was nice and fresh in my mind.
