Of applicants how many have taken Biochemisty?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My opinion on this has changed from when I started med school to now. When I started last summer, I wished I had taken anatomy and biochem in undergrad. The first 2 biochem tests I did poorly, but then I started changing the way I studied in general. Then I got As on both of the last tests. This semester we just finished Biochem II and I got a high B in the course.

I think it depends on you. I didn't take it in college b/c I heard it was super hard at my school with 1 professor to choose from, and I didn't want to bring down my GPA, and it wasn't required. And it was hard for me at first, but I think I just wasn't studying effectively. And from what I've heard from other people, its different than college biochem b/c its a lot more medical related, and you DON'T have to spend all your time memorizing structures, etc. At least at LECOM we were never tested on anything like that. Ever since I started doing better I thought it was a pretty interesting class.

I haven't taken Biochem. I have taken Cell biology which Kansas City will let me use to substitute for Biochemistry. I hope this won't look too bad because Kansas City is one of my top picks.

took biochem and genetics, both required by some schools. i was scared also about dropping my gpa with biochem, but put my all into studying and got an A. also arranged it so i was taking it over the summer.

I took that too, it was almost the same as biochemistry and genetics put together into one class.

I had two semesters of biochem and had a real love/hate relationship with it. Most of that had to do with the professor though. I'd say if you have the chance, take it! From what I've heard it is one of the most helpful courses you can take in undergrad.

I took cell & molecular bio too, but it wasn't much like my biochem class. Biochem involved more reactions. My biochem was a combination of cell/molec. bio, organic chem, physiology. So much fun!!

Everyone should come to UT-Austin for a semester and take Biochem with Andy Ellington. He is a super-genius, and probably the best teacher I have ever heard of. And this is coming from someone with like 230 semester-hours of college credit.

All exams are open-book and open-note, and on top of that, you can bring whatever books you want, and the final is take-home.

I have never worked so hard in a class in my life. It started out over capacity, with about 300 people in the room. After the first test, it was about one third that size.

The best part was, the one kinesiology student with a 2.2 GPA, in a class full of chem majors and pre-meds, set the curve. Or so the TA told me.

genetics is only required by two schools, michigan state and kansas city. unless other ones have changed requirements for the next cycle. its not worth it for me to take it for two schools that i probably won't end up going to anyway. although would have liked the option to go to kansas city. that being said, i think its a little unecessary to add yet another pre req, but thats just me.
