Off the waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats Carrbear!!!

I myself called Tufts admissions office regarding my prospects--apparently they took 14 people from the alternate list this week...I just wasn't one of them. 🙁 Oh well. Congrats to those of you who were among the fab 14, though!!🙂

Congrats! But I did get my hopes up that you got called by Mn. Will you be calling them and seeing if they just haven't gotten around to calling people yet? If so, could you let me know?
Again, Congrats!

Eeeee!!! Congrats! So that's RVC and ISU now? Do you know which of the two you'd pick? That's quite the deadline, Friday. My unsolicited 2 cents are that if you haven't heard from MN by tomorrow or Thursday, you should call them and tell them your situation (ISU needs answer by Friday, you're #1 on their waiting list). My guess would be that, even if they hadn't started notifying alternates yet, if they knew they were going to have to notify any alternates, they would bend the rules and tell you ahead of time. In any case, it's certainly worth asking about.

Oh, and just for fun....CONGRATS!!! again. 🙂 You deserve it! 🙂

NO IDEA what we'll do ("we" meaning me and the husband, 3 cats and dog)! I actually called MN yesterday and they said it would be "very shortly" that they are contacting IS alternates (it sounded like they are waiting on hearing from some people- but isn't a deadline a deadline?! 😡). I'll keep you all posted though!

Thanks for the congrats all! A year ago I never imagined I would have gotten into 2 schools and be waitlisted #1 at another!😀

YES!!! Way to go again, Carrie! You're just rockin' out the acceptances left and right! I am so happy for you! If you don't hear from MN by Friday, you know what I would do... CONGRATS! :hardy:

Anybody have news on non-resident alternates for Oklahoma State? I called Wednesday of last week and they said that they would be notifying alternates within the next couple of weeks about their status. Anybody have news about this or have been moved off the waitlist there as a non-res? Thanks. :scared:

I appreciate the info twelvetigers!

Hopefully they won't wait until the end of these couple of weeks to notify anyone. I'm anxious, needless to say.

Ah, I know that Mn is bending the rules about hearing from people, because they gave me until the 25th just to respond to their waitlist offer -- apparently they had problems putting the right amount of postage on the envelopes (they tried to send me mine twice, and it was returned -- but I got their MPH mailing?!?!) SO -- just a few more days, I'm sure carrie.

CONGRATS!!!! 😀 😀 😀

YAY Carrbear!! Congratulations!! :hardy:

And your turns coming, Catnapper, just hang in there! 😀

You know that not all 14 of those guys will choose to go there! 🙂

ARE YOU SERIOUS?! WTF?! That sucks...did they say what time on the 25th? Or just the 25th? That's when ISU needs to know by! ARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! THANK YOU for the info though! That's more than the school gives!

Thanks for the congrats 🙂

FWIW, last year I called Brenda and asked her if I could have a few more days to decide because I was considering an offer from UTK. She asked me how long I needed and gave me an extension. Of course, it made me feel that much worse to turn Iowa down, not that there weren't plenty of people waiting to take that spot.

Anyway, this is just to say that Brenda seems like a very reasonable person, and I think she would understand your situation.

Also a very good point! Remember, carrbear, these schools want you!! So they're going to be willing to work with you. You just have to ask. 🙂

I'm not sure the specifics on the timing -- they actually sent the letter to my permanent (home, in wi) address, as they couldn't get it to me here at school. my mom just told me I should call them and let them know I'm going to UW, which I did this afternoon. Had to leave a message though 🙁

Just a thought here -- if you accept at Iowa, are you bound in any way? Or, if you have to, can you accept, and then decline if/when you hear from Mn? Kinda like accepting at one school, and then waiting to hear on the waitlist for another?

Could you do that (if necessary)? Or do waitlists work differently (i.e. if you say yes to waitlist offer, you HAVE to go there?)

I have NO idea! I e-mailed Brenda to find out the cost of the deposit and that type of stuff. I can't imagine you're BOUND until you sign something-- ie: the paper work due 2 weeks after (along with money). I have no clue what their deposit would be though...😕

AGAIN: thanks for the congrats guys!!! I'm :luck:HOPING :luck: to hear from MN AND get good news on a house we want to buy on Thursday but it doesn't sound like MN will come through then. *fingers crossed anyways*!

THANK YOU for this piece of information! I REALLY like the ISU program/school/everyone I met there (though not the city...) but I feel like I do need more time. I'll see what happens!

You should go to ISU, it rocks.

Haha, seriously though, it's a tough decision. The deposit is $500. If you don't hear from Mn in time, and can't get an extension, I would put down the money. Then, if MN comes through, you can call ISU right away and give up your spot. I realize that would mean losing the money, but if you look at it in the long run, $500 is a drop in the bucket compared to what four years of vet school costs. As long as you would be happy going to ISU if you don't get into MN, then I don't think theres anything wrong with putting a deposit in.

As you probably already saw, I just replied to your post, but had no idea you were accepted off wait-lists! Mucho congrats to you! :hardy: Good to hear they're moving down the wait-list for Iowa, although I'm much further down than you are. 😳

thanks so much! i hear they are down by #17...wonder if all schools go down that low on their alternate list and if thats a good thing?? ah well, i am really leaning toward ISU (as opposed to LSU).

In regard to waitlists and how they move: What are the chances that a given school will exhaust its waitlist and then go back to accept someone that they'd previously rejected? I know that it can happen--and I'm not holding my breath here, already looking toward the next application cycle--but I am curious to hear from anyone who has heard of this happening.

Sorry for the apparent hijack here, just curious....

I think someone on here (SDN) said that this cycle they were rejected from Cornell and then got a call...my memory on it is a bit fuzzy even though I just read it last night or something.

If I'm remembering correctly, Mn has called some people declined admission with spots before. They haven't started to contact waitlist yet though this year.

LSU did this to several people last year, so it does happen.

The vet who I worked for in FL had a story about this. She applied to vet school after her first 3 years when she had all of her prerequisites done (was an undergrad at UF) and got rejected post-interview. She got a job at the teaching hospital and worked there all summer up until classes were going to start (she was registered to finish her BS). One day before they started, the dean of the vet school actually came to find her at the hospital and told her that if she still wanted to go to vet school they had a spot open for her. She of course accepted, but didn't have any of the information that the other new students had. So she went to the first day all excited, but wearing her normal clothing (jeans and stuff) and everyone was all dressed up. Turns out they were supposed to dress up for the first day and nobody had told her this.

She was very embarrassed, but at least she's a vet now. 🙂

Not sure which schools you applied to, but MSU told me they have exhausted their waitlist a few times in the past few years (I'm really hoping it happens again since I'm on the list - fingers crossed).

Mississippi told us that they have exhausted their waitlist in the past as well

Well, this should give some hope to waitlisters out there: I just got into OKSU off the waitlist OOS yesterday! I'll be sending my deposit in tomorrow morning!

Actually I was a No at Cornell OS and recieved a call yesterday saying they had a slot for me. I am still going back and forth over which school to choose and they gave me until tomorrow to reach my decision. If I decline I assume the next person they call also was a No. Kind of blows your mind.

If we were criminals this would definitely be cruel and unusual punishment right? 😀 I know it is a great dilema to be in but I think its giving me ulcers LOL

Sounds like they are having a hard time filling the OOS at Cornell. Meanwhile I'm IS in NY and still wait to here anything. Frustrating.

Awww, Velcro I cant imagine how that feels. Its sucks that they have to fill those OS spots with out of state residents because of contracts..otherwise I think its definately not fair. If they exhaust their first choices AND their waitlists for OS students then they should have some stipulation that says they can pull people from the IS waitlist verses recinding rejections. Just not nice to know that you were actually deemed qualified enough to get a waitlist spot and that others are being un-rejected just to fill seats. Not trying to pour salt in your wounds...just empathizing (not sure about the grammar but you get the idea).

Yeah, the funny thing is, is I assume that they limit the IS to the amount of students that they receive money for the state for and then make up the rest of their budget with OOS tuitions. But, I would even be willing to pay OOS tuition at Cornell because I'd still save about $7k a year over paying MN OOS.

But I can't complain too much because I have a spot at MN and that's a great school. Still though...

I wonder how far off from their projected OOS numbers their c/o 2012 currently is . . and how much their budget depends on that OOS tuition. Interesting. It seems logical that they'd eventually switch to the IS list.

I think Camboo's right about the budget thing. I'm not positive since my state doesnt have a vet school, but I'm guessing the state only subsidizes a set number of IS slots. I wonder if they would ever offer an OOS slot to an IS student on the condition that they would have to pay OOS tuition... I think that would be fair, although I have a feeling that would cause problems too.

I also was rejected at Cornell and got the call today that I am accepted. Woooow, talk about messing with your mind!

Now I have absolutely NO CLUE what to do. 😛 I'm interested in equine and the two top equine vets in Maine both went to Cornell. But I've heard it isn't as strong as UPenn's equine ... I don't mind PBL (I think I would do well with it) but I've actually never even been to Cornell!!! I really liked the people at UPenn and the strong friendly atmosphere I got. Anybody here equine at Cornell?

That's awesome!! Go to Cornell--so us still waitlisted at Tufts have some hope!! 😉

Hey everybody, I just got off the wait list at VMRCVM IS. I don't know what # on the list I was, but somebody didn't get the deposit in. Me and my finance (will be wife) will both be there in the same year. Does anybody know that happening before? Hope to see some of you in august.

Congratulations FlyFishinDoc!! It must have been meant to be for you two!

I think there is actually another engaged couple in the 2012 class at VMRCVM (they've posted here on SDN, if my memory serves).

Oh see I was going to say the same thing about us waitlisted OOS at Penn...though I would need either 7 waitlisted people to say no thanks or 7 more people to decline as well! 😛

Awww, sorry guys! I think I'm sticking with UPenn for a multitude of reasons. So ... that will mean a spot at Tufts and Cornell still open! I honestly thought that I would feel different than I do and would be sooo glad I am off the waitlist but ugh, it has been TORTURE and caused lots of tears. It's no fun trying to decide the next 4 years of my life!

I am sure it was a very tough decision to go with penn, especially with Tufts and Cornell asking for you. I am sure you are making the best choice, and hopefully 7 IS people will give up on penn and I can see you in class next year...If not I will re-apply and see you the following year! 😀

Congrats on making a decision WishingnHoping - i understand how tough it must be and totally understand!

Aw, thanks guys. ::hugs:: I really hope you get off those waitlists. You are all so nice and very, very deserving. You don't know how happy I am to be going to a school where I will be friends with people like you!

Thanks, I think the other couple might be my fiance.

I just got off the waitlist at Auburn!!! I am so freaking excited. So... now... just have to decide!
