Offered a spot off the waitlist but I can't matriculate this year...what are my options?

I spoke with a member of an admissions committee at an MD school. They were telling me that deferrals are uncommon because they are rarely sought out, but the schools are actually veryy lenient on deferring students a year if they have some reason for wanting that. Its just a matter of filling out a form.

Accept the offer. Then bring up the deferral.

Worse case scenario (unlikely), they can't. And you at least have a solid reason for turning down a seat that can be simply explained on your next application (denial of your request for deferral)

That's not a solid reason.

I suppose I meant its more concrete than simply turning it down without attempting and just describing your story later. Without the actual attempt to defer, it could look like you just didn't want to attend that school yet stayed in the running and wasted everybody else's time... And that would look worse

Basically you can
1) Withdraw from the waitlist before they have a chance to contact you and formally offer you an acceptance. Don't plan on applying to UIC next year. Pros: You get to do your job abroad without burning any bridges, and are not blacklisted from ALL med schools. Cons: You're going to be blacklisted from UIC, which you say in another thread is your dream school. Also, there's a very real chance you may not get into any schools next year.

Can you elaborate on this? So if you decline a med school acceptance while on waitlist, you will be blacklisted from all medical schools?
