OMG I can't wait............
Even though I have a strong application (3.9+GPA, research, extracurriculars, etc, etc) I've been rejected pre-interview by Cornell, NYU, Penn, Yale; waitlisted at a top tier school where my father is an associate professor, and even waitlisted at my own (so-so) state school.
However, for whatever reason, I was interviewed by Harvard.
Anybody think there is a change they saw something in me that nobody else did, and that I will actually get in?
yes
At last! A countdown I am nervous about! I am also waiting for Penn, Columbia, and Cornell, but Harvard is my first choice (I think). I think my interviews went well, not really sure though.
Oldking, I'm sure your application is fantastic - there are always flukes (meaning your rejections to your other schools, not your interview at Harvard - I'm sure that was deserved). Congrats and best of luck!
One bad thing though - Harvard has little waitlist movement to speak of. For 160 spots they accept like 220 total. Yikes! Oh well, crossing my fingers 😀

You were rejected pre-interview?
Well nobody wants an overachiever...you should try lowering your stats. Take an advanced science class and pop some C-'s in there.
OldKing... I bet I know what happened... but just a guess. Did your state schools have secondaries? I know Yale puts a *LOT* of emphasis on the essays you write in your secondary for them... so maybe that's where you lucked out? Whereas for harvard, you just have to put your name and then they just look at your AMCAS primary.
It was weird for me too.. pre-interview rejected by Cornell, Upenn, and COlumbia, but interviewed at dook, yale, and umich
weird

I experienced the same thing-- pre-interview rejections from Stanford, Hopkins, and Duke, but I interviewed at Harvard, Yale, WashU, Penn, and Columbia. Honestly, I think that the adcoms just lay the files on the floor, close their eyes, and spit. If you stay loogie free, then you make the cut.
Not sure about the number interviewed - the latest MSAR data says 780, but they could have interviewed less this year.
Unfortunately, I doubt they waitlist a huge number of people. I would say they reject about half of the interviewees, accept to fill the class and waitlist the rest. I remember them saying at the interview that they numerically rank the interviewees and just go down the line until the class is filled, so I'm not sure how this translates numerically into accepted/waitlist/rejected.

Does anyone know how many specifically get interviewed for HST?

from what i've heard - thats partially true. you are ranked numerically, but in a particular context. i heard this from my host, who will be on the adcom next year - spoken informally, and not the official line by any means:
essentially there are tons of different subcommittees - those for internationals, urms, people that have done international work, harvard ugrads etc... and you basically get put into the pile that describes you best. you have to 'win' your subcomittee to go onto the 'final round' of the subcommittee (i assume everything including your interview is taken into consideration - but it also explains why some people with great interviews don't get in - and some that didn't have good ones get in to some extent). while this sounds like it implies a quota system - i'm not sure if it is that clear cut. for those that are waitlisted - if someone withdraws, they try to take the next ranked person out of the subcomittee that lost a person - maintaining balance. this sounded plausible to me - but again, this is not gospel, just what i heard. gluck to yaz
How exactly does the subcommitee system work? Is it divided purely by what college one attends?
http://www.hms.harvard.edu/fa/standcomm/ad.html
So here we can see that there are four subcommittees, plus one subcommittee each for HST and MD/PhDs. There is also the overall "Admissions Committee," who must be the final round people that Habari talked about. (I almost called you by your old name Habari - caught it just in time 😉 Why the change in name anyways?)
Of course we still have no idea what groups of students each of these subcommittees look at. All I can say is that I had one person from subcommittee #2, and one from #3, but I don't know who represented me. I also know that another student interviewing the same day at me had the same doctor from group #2, but had a totally different background/experience than me. But that still doesn't tell me anything because either that doctor was representing him and just writing me an eval, or vice versa.

hah - no secret mystic_b😉 gotta switch it up everynow and again .. or something. i saw those subcommittees you referred to, but the guy gave me the impression that there was more going on (what i alluded to). he was a newbie though, so he could be wrong. nevertheless - doesn't change much at this point
Interesting, my doctor interviewer is in #3, but my student interviewer (which I think went well) is in the main admissions committee but not on a subcommittee.

Also, I think I remember hearing that they interviewed 690 people this year, am I correct?
Yeah, they told us that they were interviewing less people this year. Around 700 is what I was told, so that seems about right.

they're not emailing out their acceptances...i might be wrong, but I heard they did that in the past.
Does anyone know when Harvard's second look weekend is? I mean, if I'm going to continue with my wishful thinking, I might as well go all the way and block off that weekend. Right? I heard a nasty runor that it is always the same weekend as Penn's. Anyone know?
you guys prob got this email too... but just in case....here it is....
Dear Harvard Medical School Applicant:
This message is being sent to you from the Harvard Medical School's E-mail Application Response System (E.A.R.S.)
Due to recent snow emergencies in the Boston area, we have fallen a few days behind schedule in making our final admission decisions. All decision letters will be mailed out by March 6th, 2003 rather than the February 28th date listed in our admissions literature.
Only the Committee on Admissions has the authority to make offers of admission to Harvard Medical School, and, to be valid, an offer of admission must be signed by the Chairperson of the Committee on Admissions. For this reason, no decisions can be given by phone or email. Please allow ten days for your letter to reach you; if you have not received it by March 16th, please contact the Admissions Office for further instructions.

Funny, I didn't receive this e-mail. Oh well, probably another waitlist anyway.

I think there are actually more than four subcommittees. Harvard College itself has multiple subcommittees, i.e. each subcommittee takes care of applicants from a few undergrad houses.
I just called HMS admissions office and they said that the email was sent out to everyone who applied to Harvard (regardless of whether you interviewed or not) and that the reason someone might not have gotten an email is because HMS had the wrong email address for them.
just to bump this thread.
if I am reading things correctly, some letters (I'm hoping HST) should already be on their way; they just won't be finished until the 6th of March.
let anxiety reign.

Well, its the 3rd, some letters should definitely already be on their way.
Iminent waitlist/rejection probably.....still anxious though. Being abroad right now is making the waiting worse. Well at least they aren't keeping us waiting until the third week of March like Penn.
Anyone know how many get in off the waitlist?

Just an update to see if anyone has heard from Harvard yet? Also, if these dates are correct, I think this means that the UCSF, Stanford and Harvard re-visit dates are all on the same weekend- (I'm sure along with others as well)? What kind of planning was that?
🙄
Can anyone clarify this?
Thanks-
M.

anyway, good luck to all. we'll reconvene this weekend.

Hi there. Just to let everyone know - I'm pretty sure that although Harvard says we'll all get thin envelopes no matter what, they actually send out huge ones to people who have been accepted and the little ones to everyone else. At least that is what they did last year. I hope that helps. Good luck everyone.
