OFFICIAL: 2003 HARVARD Countdown

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Speaking of d-day...this whole Harvard process reminds me of the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan. We're all on the boats waiting, then the doors open and machine gun fire mows down 97% of us. A luck few get to the beach and even then it's a hard road. I guess the guys in Boston are at the front of the boat...GOOD LUCK ALL! 🙂

Dynx,

I feel compelled to say that I think your analogy is hyperbolic at best. The men and women who have fought and died for our country have little or nothing to do with those of us who may or may not get in to Harvard Medical School. In fact, for those of us who have interviewed there, we will most likely get accepted at *some* accredited institution, and, thus, will all become doctors. Unlike those who stormed the beach at Normandy.

I would hope that an impending war on our horizon would somber up your mood and make you realize how lucky we are to have the freedom to do what we like with our lives.

I wanted to find out if anyone has been accepted yet. I interviewed for the HST pathway at Harvard, and I was wondering if anybody knew the statistics of how many people were interviewed for HST? Again I wish everybody all the best!!!

Thank you.

old king and Class of 07,
Lighten up. Do you really think I am saying getting rejected from Harvard and getting killed are the same thing? It's a joke...A JOKE. You should take a class in identifying humor. Here's a concept for you... look for the similarities in the situation I proposed. Lots of people...lots of people getting knocked out of the running at the same time. An analogy is not an equality. Yank the stick out of your ass. I respect our military men and those who have died for our freedom but I do not live my life in fear nor do I edit what I say for fear of offending people like you who search for things to be offended by. Before you respond to this THINK about what I am saying. If you can grasp it then I will be assured by your silence...if not I will be amused by your rambling. See you on the beach.😎

Don't worry Dynx, I can appreciate your analogy.

Too many people on SDN insert their own perception of malicious intent where there is none. My $0.02.

By the way, Class of 07. If an analogy wasn't hyperbolic we wouldn't use it now would we. I have never heard of a person searching for a way to understate what he was trying to express.🙄

You know, looking at the US News stats, Harvard accepted about 240 applicants to get a class of about 160.

Someone posted earlier that Harvard only sends out enough outright acceptances to just fill the class. But if that's true, then doesn't that mean that 1/3 of the class comes off the waitlist? That'd be wierd, considering that everyone keeps saying that "there is very little waitlist movement."

On a side note, if they only interviewed about 700 people this year, and still end up giving out 240 accepts, then that means we've got a 35% chance of getting in post-interview.

Reassuring, but probably just a bunch of statistical nonsense manufactured by my psyche in an attempt to ease the anxiety of waiting for the rejection/waitlist that still hasn't arrived.

Well.... usually my mail comes at 5 PM on Saturday, but today my mom woke me up at 10:30 with a big envelope from Harvard -- I can't believe I got in!!! Good luck to everyone else!

I got the small one.

yeah, small here too.
oh well...
congrats sunny

...Kovie..Harvard!????

Thanks guys... Yeah, I'm just a bit outside Philadelphia -- and my current address is the same as my permanent address, so I'm not sure which they're sending it to. I hope some more SDNers get some good news!

yeah, i got my letter at my permanent, not current, address.

Congratulations to all who were accepted!

I am applying to med school this year, and I wanted to know if you guys put up your info on interview feedback or something like that.
If not, you would mind posting your stats, if that's ok? Or pm me?
It's great to hear about your acceptances, congrats again!

I did not get anything in the mail today.... Maybe the Chicago mail system is just slow...

I wish I could feel as sunny as sunngirl but i got the tiny envelope from harvard as I did from wash u, cornell, columbia, and duke. not much to feel sunny about 🙁

sunnygirl, you sound really cute...maybe we can go out or something sometime so this cloudyboy could get some sun.

boy this is a killer. It seems some ppl got letters at their permanent address while others got them @ the current addresses. Great.

while being thin usually gets you lots of things in america...today it got me nothing...if harvard was a nightclub...the bouncer just denied b/c i wasnt dressed fashionably enough for them...but it is what it is...still gonna be a doctora just not one at harvard

With all this talk of thick and thin, I just want to pass on that the waitlists are also big thick envelopes - make sure you check inside before you get too excited when the mail comes😉

Lemme get this straight...

So the waitlists and acceptances both come in big envelopes?

And the mailings, which are one week late anyway, are being sent to either permanent or current address?

And I'm still waiting to get something, anything, in the mail?

Confusion + anxiety + waiting = torture. 🙁

I'd like to know also about the big and small envelopes... would be nice if someone could clarify.

great comment there moops...you must think you are so damn cool making such derisive posts. doctors like helping people and interacting with people--you, i know, will make the worst doctor ever making such sarcastic unhelpful comments.

everyone should be nice and helpful like sunnygirl.

Cloudyboy, i'm so sorry to hear that the med school application process has been rough for you -- we've all been there, for sure. It's all one big crapshoot, in my opinion. I hope you hear some good news from other schools you've applied to ... hopefully that will brighten your day a bit.

And as for your response to moops, I completely agree. Maybe moops was trying to be funny, but his comment was completely insensitive.

It's very flattering, Cloudyboy, that you think I am cute and nice and helpful from the few posts I have made on SDN. This Sunnygirl would love to help you in your search for sun and happiness -- you should set up your Private Messaging so we can get to know each other better.

I must admit, I'm very impressed by the USPS. Very thin letter made it to CA on Sat., and I'm sure I don't have to clarify what that thickness implies. Maybe those of you receiving fat envelopes have to wait longer due to the extra weight. 😉

Cloudyboy - you're cracking me up! Hope the sun is shining a little brighter now. 🙂

Cheer up pal! /me hands Cloudyboy a cookie and a lollipop. You're right though. Sunnygirl does sound like a kind person, and it's not surprising that the Committee on Admissions saw that quality in her. Harvard has that way with selecting people.

As a semi-serious offer, Sunnygirl, if you need a place to stay during HMS's revisit weekend, you're welcome to spend the night at my place on the Harvard undergrad campus. Strictly professional, on one of the futons in my common room 🙂. If Vandy's more of your style, I can contact some of the HMS students I know to see if they can give you a place to crash.

Wow, that is fast. Was it postmarked on the 6th? My decision is being sent to TX, and hasn't gotten there yet.

okay this is terrible. you doofs (referring to "cloudy boy" and 'almost' sunnygirl) for taking offense at the small envelope comment is absolutely ridiculous. stop being such dorks and live and laugh a little bit. i didn't mean to make you two bunny rabbits cry, however. maybe you should consider pathology? i know a few pathologists.. you don't have to interact with any patients, so there is absolutely no chance of taking any offense to any comments..

summary: learn to deal with the good and the bad. especially when no bad is intended, as was the case above.

and your comment, cloudy boy, concerning what "kind" of physician I would make not only demonstrated your insincerity, but your immaturity as well. I hope you were efficient in conveying those qualities to the admissions committee- that will help all of us who are serious about a commitment to medicine.

lastly, take your flirtatious affair and take them somewhere where they belong- there are online date sites and AIM chat stuff for people who choose to interact in such a way.. use them.

out.

this kind of behavior is unbecoming for the HAHVAHD thread.

will the mail just come already?! 😡
the waiting kills me.

bujji13,

my phat packet was postmarked the 6th, got it in DC on the 8th...received it at my current address

😉

good luck!

Yeah, it's postmarked the 6th, and letter is dated the 6th. Post-interview rejection of course.

Moops, chill out!!

Dear SDNers,
I wanted to let you all know that I got into HST!!!! I hope to see you next year to all of my future classmates.... For people who did not get in this time, I hope to see you later in residency for we are all peers and friends. Good luck to everybody!!!!

God Bless:clap:

Savagely Rejected!

Hope that Helps

..just got the thin envelope from HST

--Born a Harvard hopeful in June of 02...

--Died another rejected applicant March 03..

What a year..from submitting the HST essay and waiting in anxiety to a one week high from receiving the interview invite. Letter(s) of recc from PI (who happens to be HST alum), along with solid research experience, EC's and stats in combination with a cement-mixer full of hope (and some cement--can anyone guess what show?)--still add up to thin letter. No more fantasizing about the big H or MIT. 'Tis a world I shan't ever know! 🙁

Northwestern MSTP, ready or not...here I come!!! 😀 😀 😀

Yo man,
I feel for you man.... A lot of times this interview thing is just random.... I had no idea or hope of getting into HST, but stuff sometimes works out and sometimes it doesn't. I am sure you will make an incredible physician.

Peace

Well, still haven't gotten mine. So it must be coming tomorrow. I mean, it can't take more than 6 days for mail to get from MA to TX.

At least I hope not.....

Man waiting sux.

received the phat enevelope yesterday but it wasn't as fat as the blunt I rolled up right after opening it.

Right now I am terribly hungover at work and have thrown up twice and shat three times and I have only been here 3 hours.🙂

buji,

I think the fat envelope takes longer to travel, I am predicting an accept for you today...

edit: another confirmation of how random this entire process is.

Yo, I'm in Jersey and STILL haven't heard anything. Alpha, if you are right about the big envelope taking longer, my envelope must weight 500 pounds.😉

Well, I did come home to something big and fat in my mailbox...a big fat REJECTION. Damn, I love Boston too. 🙁

I am sorry to hear that Dr. Chooch. The nice thing is that you still many more options left...if I remember correctly, you are still waiting to hear from cornell among others.

Thanks, and you are very right. I really don't have anything to complain about because I've been pretty darn lucky so far in this whole med school thing and I know that. Btw, congrats on your acceptance, that is really kick@$$. 😀

Don't worry Dr. Chooch, I am in your same position. I was wondering the other day how I would make up my mind between Harvard and Hopkins (yeah, I know 🙄), and then the folks at HMS made my decision for me. 😀

Of course I was disappointed to get the thin letter in the mail yesterday, but then I thought in the big scheme of things I have been really lucky and I have little right to complain, so I am actually getting over this surprisingly easily. Hopefully it will turn out the same for you.

Congrats and best of luck to those who got in!
