Would you actually take a disjointed program at Yale over an MSTP? I was rejected at Cornell, and even though they have amazing research in my field which I could still participate in as an MD-only, I say to hell with them...I'm not going to be their battered spouse!

Yeah that is a really tough question and not one I wanted to tackle which is why I thought I couldn't take an MD-only interview. I am just not ready to give up on Yale yet. Of course, I would apply internally to the Yale MSTP if I decided to go there. If I didn't get into both programs the decision would be made for me. If I did though, I will have to strongly consider the financial differences. I'm not really sure what you mean by a disjointed program. I know for science PhDs some of your classes count for med school which cuts down the time. This is not the case for what I want to do. I guess I am just keeping my options open right now. The MD/PhD that I want is very non-trad so I feel like I shouldn't close any doors at the moment.

The program director didn't even take the time to personally sign the letter.

FYI, MSTP rejectees are still in consideration for MD-only by default.

Hey, I paid 80 bucks for that rejection, it damn well should be properly notarized.

But in all honesty, I think it's kind of cheap. I remember when I applied to undergrad, my rejection from Harvard was personally signed by the Dean of Admissions. He sends out about 20,000 of those letters every year.

what terrifies me is that ive gotten interviews at more selective schools, and i think that my getting rejected at NYU is an indication that ill get rejected at those other schools too.

AGHH! NYU is starting to reject people post-interview!!?!??!?

(I somehow thought because they're non-rolling admissions, I wouldn't have to hear the news (good or bad) until at least December.)

Thanks, I really, really liked them. Alas, now I'm checking my email every 30s with trepidation. I don't think that you need to worry about your chances at the other schools you are interviewing at simply because of the NYU rejection. It might just be a "fit" issue. Different schools are looking for different things, and since you are a super strong applicant, I'm sure some of them are looking for you!

1. I'm really worried about my getting into an MSTP program at all, at this point. I'm interviewing for two, rejected from three, and still waiting on UCLA and UCSF (which I have like no chance of getting into, anyway). Given that I think I didn't do so well in the NYU interview, I'm waiting for an NYU rejection any day now. Ahhh! I'd also really like to know what about my application was off-putting (was it because I haven't published?) since my numbers (4.0, 40) should be fine.

2. Is it standard to call the school to tell them you're still interested in their MD program? Harvard and Stanford say you get put in the MD pool automatically, but are you expected to call to confirm interest? Also, how long after an MSTP rejection should you hear back about MD invite or rejection? (I guess as long as you don't hear from them, it's better than a rejection... 😀)

Sorry about Stanford 🙁.

1) I have no idea, and it's unlikely that anybody on here could tell you. You could always contact the schools and ask them for an honest opinion of why they rejected you?

2) No, I wouldn't say it's standard, but it can't hurt. Apparently after rejecting MSTP, some schools say they send you to MD-only but your application will just languish until the spring and then it will all be too late. So I don't think it hurts to contact them and express interest in MD-only, tell them why, etc.

Well two invites is better than none. After looking at your MDApps I guess I wonder why you only applied to 7 MSTPs if that is what you really wanted to get in to. I doubt something in your app is off-putting since you have multiple MD invites. The only thing I can think of is maybe your research mentor letter isn't strong or you didn't express enough in your PS and MD/PhD why you wanted to be a physician scientist. You applied to some really competitive schools for MSTP and not that you aren't competitive, but at those schools it can be kind of random. I doubt it's because you don't have publications though.

I doubt you have to call. At Yale I received an email MD invite just a few hours after my MSTP rejection. You could just give the MD admissions a call and ask if they are reviewing your app.

Prehaps the best thing you can do now is start calling MSTPs where you have MD invites and see if they accept internal applicants and how sucessful internal applicants usually are. I know you said on your MDApps that your MD-only schools were places that were research heavy but that you couldn't live for 8 years. I guess you need to decide for yourself what is more important - a great place to live or the career you want. That's a tough decisions so I wish you lots of !

A note to NYU rejects: I emailed asking if we would be considered for MD only, and they said yes. They said they would offer interview invites within the next two months or so. I already had an MD interview while I was there, so I don't know where that leaves me. More to follow once I get a response.

same situation here. Just wondering if it's possible to apply to MSTP internally. Plus, isn't that completely insane to forgo a perfectly good MSTP from another school just to see if I can apply to Harvard MSTP internally? If that fails, I may end up with $100,000+ debt.

I know. Not that I am assuming that I can get in to np either, but I have already got into a MSTP, so... well, let's put it this way: I like the MSTP I got in a lot, but I am still looking if other schools have more to offer.

OK, so I was expecting this one, but it sounds like it's a complete rejection, not just an MSTP one. Like... they didn't mention MSTP at all. Maybe it's because I couldn't pass MD muster, so they didn't even pass my application on? I'm not sure how UCSF works, but oh well, I'm not in state.

And add me to those people who got a Harvard NP interview! I almost feel like it's a pity interview at this point - oh, sorry, no MSTP, but you can pay us lots of money to come here and not do research! Of course I'm still happy not to be outright rejected, and although I'd rather get an MD/PhD, when it comes down to it I can still do everything I want with an MD.

And sorry to hear about the JHU rejection! That's harsh.

Weird--I did NOT see that one coming. I really like Pitt but I will definitely go to Rochester's MSTP before their MD-only, so nothing to do but see what happens with the waitlist, I guess.
