Ok, here is a better answer thanks to the link by chylo:

The data for only those programs that participated in both the 2006 and 2007 studies indicate substantial increases across the application cycle. MSTP programs increased their invitations, interviews, and acceptances by more than 10 percent. Non-MSTP programs increased their invitations, interviews, and acceptances by more than a third.

Grrrr. Up until now my rejections haven't gotten me down but this one does. I really liked UCSF. 🙁 Gosh, I'm really feeling down now.
 
It's all good Onc. I was really into Cornell, but I guess it wasn't meant to be :-(. Speaking as somebody who did not go to his first choice undergraduate school and now already wants to plan where his donor plaque will go, you can be very surprised at how things work out in the end :-D!

I didn't even apply to Johns Hopkins because of Baltimore (not to mention I don't think I'd fit in there...) :-D.

Indeed, I prefer to get my fill of that jewel of the Chesapeake through The Wire, and that is contact intimate enough for me!

I've reached a new low of depression. The research there was amazing. I wanted Yale so badly. I'm going to go cry now.

Update: 4 hours later I got an emmail offering me an MD-only interview. This is bittersweet for me but I am definitely going to go.

I was debating [with myself] if I wanted to go to Yale with that MD-only invite. After three weeks (got MSTP rejection and MD-invite in late Sept)... I decided not to. So long, Yale. Good luck to you, onedoc19.

Thanks! Actually before this whole thing started I told myself I wouldn't take an MD-only interview because I want MD/PhD. But ultimately the research at Yale in my field is outstanding and because of MD/PhD I had to submit an application to the history department (which was not a factor in the rejection) so technically I could still be admitted into both MD and PhD programs at Yale. It's a long-shot and I would have some serious financial things to think about but I am not ready to give it up yet. Good luck on the rest of your interviews!
 
Would you actually take a disjointed program at Yale over an MSTP? I was rejected at Cornell, and even though they have amazing research in my field which I could still participate in as an MD-only, I say to hell with them...I'm not going to be their battered spouse!
