Official 2008 Secondary Discussion Thread part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I swear I saw on this Thread that someone posted the Vandy 2ndary Prompts.

Can someone help me out?

Btw has Emory sent out their 2ndary yet?

Got an email titled UW SMPH status with an attachment called "Interview Invites" that said:

Dear University of Wisconsin MD Applicant:

You have completed your secondary application to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health MD degree program. Next, our Admissions Committee will do a preliminary review of your application and choose whether or not they wish to invite you for an interview. Preliminary reviews are just beginning and interview invitations will begin to be sent mid to late September and following.

We appreciate your interest in our MD program. Be assured that our Admissions Committee carefully considers your application in the preliminary review process, and that this process takes time.

Regards,

Lucy Wall

Assistant Dean for Admissions

I just received the same email. Did your heart skip a beat when you saw the title of the attachment? I got my hopes up for a moment there!

Heh, well I'm a WI resident so I supposedly get a guaranteed interview with my stats, but that is definitely a pretty misleading title hehe

Anyone know how long it takes for the status page to update at NYMC. I submitted my secondary on 8/7 and it still says it hasnt been processed so I can't view if my letters of req have been sent either?

hey guys..i'm in a bit of a dilemma.

i graduated this past may and am only applying to medical schools this year. i'm going to be working during my year off and because i've been so busy, i've neglected some of my secondaries. it's been almost 3 weeks since i received some of them and i'm trying my best to finish them off, but it's going very slowly. do you think it's even worth to apply at this point?

if anyone could offer some advice i'd really appreciate it!

There is no doubt that you should finish if you started. Timing is still decent now. However if you quit now, having submitted the AMCAS primary app will automatically make you a reapplicant next year. And that will be a pain itself because reapplying involves additional essays asking how you improved and etc. Good luck.

do you know what those stats are that get you an automatic-ish interview

A REALLY long time. One of my recommenders submitted her LOR on 8/7 and it didn't show up on the status page until 9/11. Absolutely ridiculous. Patience is the watchword of the day.

Is it a poor idea to discuss a desire to go into academic medicine in the secondary of a top research school?

Not at all. It's an excellent idea. At the end of the day, the institutions that can support really good research and give you the opportunities that you want are the same ones that are academically strong.

Research leads teaching... Faculty that do interesting research and are at the heads of their fields are able to teach that experience and their students become leaders of that discipline in the field.

Marry the two together in your secondary essays, but don't lead with pure teaching. "I want to do a medical degree because I want to teach medicine." is very circular, and ignores the objective of becoming any sort of physician.

Don't forget that medical training always leads to a degree of teaching, either in a lecture theatre or in a hospital setting with future medical students. As an intern, you'll be helping to teach medical students, and as a resident and eventually an attending, you'll be mentoring and teaching those more junior than yourself at all times. It's the way it works, so a degree of comfort with the role of teacher is not a bad thing 🙂

still waiting to hear from Loyola about 2ndry. I was verified by AMCAs 8/23ish ( i can't remember exactly). how long does it take them to send secondarys?

It's screened, so it takes longer. I was verified 6/6 and received it 7/13.

I was verified 8/20 and am still waiting on Loyola as well.

I just got loyola. I also just got put on "hold" at GW. I really thought I would get some invites already. This is so disheartening.

First off, I applied to 32 schools 😱 (Majorly in debt!)

I finished the majority of my secondary apps in August/September, although I still have a few that I'm working on..

I haven't even started the secondaries for Georgetown, Penn State, George Washington, Boston U, Temple or Tulane.

At this point, is it even worth it for me to fill out/send in those secondaries? On one hand, I feel like i've come this far, so it couldn't hurt.. but then I think of what a waste of time/money it is to apply to school where i don't stand a chance.. any input? You all seem pretty on top of your game.

Do all the UC schools screen pre-secondary?

Penn State Secondary~

In 50 words:
Explain the negative aspects of medicine that you considered in making this career decision.

I have definitely considered some negatives but I'm not sure they are appropriate!!

Please give me some ideas that ADCOMS won't hate!

im not sure if this has been asked already, but im not going back through 2000+ posts. when writing the essays concerning why I want to go to a specific school, should I refer to the school by its name or treat it like a person, say "you". for example, "At Creighton School of Medicine I will be able to practice ..." or "At your school I will be able to practice ..."

I feel the first sounds more professional, but less personal
