Wish I had some idea of my chances for each. For all I know, I was uniformly "blah" at each program and they all ranked me as mediocre, or I was uniformly "weeeeeeeeeeee" at them and they all ranked me well.

...and it might not be uniform at all. Personally, I have a feeling some programs really like me, and others are 'meh;' with that likability being independent of that program's competitiveness. Maybe it's just me but I do think programs have different personalities and/or backgrounds that they prefer.

Lot of people ranking Michigan #1 here. Hopefully, we all match there.

I would say 3 or 4 out of our 15 applicants to anesthesiology at my school want to rank Michigan first. I don't know if they did, though.

Interesting but not surprising. They have a great program that provide excellent training and their residents seem very happy with their choice of program. I would say that doesn't bode well with me considering I ranked them number#1 assuming your classmates ranked Michigan #1. I guess we will see come match day.
 
Well, I can't speak to that because I do not know you, but I wouldn't worry about that too much. One of them probably has a great chance because of board scores and a significant other that is already a resident at UM, don't know about the others.

just out of curiosity what board scores would you consider a shoe-in at UM?

Forgive my haste, I mean relative to the other applicants that I know of and was referring to in that post (and I agree with WLG's statement). There are certainly no guarantees, but this is one of those guys that's actually a great guy, hard worker, and scored I think well above 250s, plus has a family interest. My intention is to say that everyone that knows him would be shocked if he didn't match there. Scratch the shoe-in comment, as obviously there are a lot of people like that and certainly a lot applying to programs like UM.

In any case, I wish I could say the same about myself at my top choice.

Remember. There's an upcoming generation of people who are less and less impressed by prestige.. and more impressed by work-life balance. (ie. Google's style of corporate work life.. From Google's career site: "We offer our engineers “20-percent time” so that they're free to work on what they're really passionate about." )

You say it like it's a bad thing, but 20% free time gave Google Gmail and AdSense. 50% of their new product launches come from the free time. It's been genius for Google.

My much admired histology/ophtho prof was also a personal mentor. His questions about my personal life/goals jolted me. "Do you want to just produce kids or raise them?"

After much discussion, my priorities are marriage, family and then career. I am NOT going to be 40 and seeking IVF or 40 and divorced because I failed to nurture the most important relationship there is...or 40 and single for that matter.

My career was never meant to be in competition with my spouse's. I'm more than willing to work 7-3 after residency so long as I get to pick my kids up from school, do homework together and have meals ready for my family.

After the 240s and great medical training/research up to this point, I hope I can pass on to my kids (when I do have them) the importance of intellectual dilligence, hardwork and persistence.
 
That being said, my list reflects the altered perspective I have acquired along the way...

In no particular order, Location and being in New England matter most, including being in CT where most of my family is:

Northeast- CT has arguably the best K-5 school system in the country; MA has best private 6-12th.

Out of curiosity, if you don't have kids yet, then why would school system (K-12) matter for a residency program? Just wondering, really.

Things could always change, but I intend the move for residency to be the last major one I make. Wherever I go for residency, I intend to put down roots, fellowship in that general region and focus on finding work in that area after training as well. This will mean starting a family and raising kids in that region too.

As such, I've taken a lot of factors (including school systems) into consideration and had lengthy discussions on my list.

I probably represent the minority opinion here (I've never actually polled 😀) but I'm sort of in the camp that believes academic dues have been paid and other matters can take the fore. I intend to bust my balls during residency, but somewhere around 4th year, starting a family will be a priority for me (as maybe a few others in this class).

It's interesting, I've been reading through the EM ROL thread and I've seen this sentiment echoed by one other particular poster.

Hubby is done with training and so it's really pointless to drag a family around the country for one training opportunity or job opportunity or the other.

Besides, as long as it's in the U.S., I'm pretty confident I'll get good training. I may sacrifice name recognition at some point but if my focus is on the local market where I get my training, that may not be so much of an issue.

I'm glad to see that someone else out there didn't go on 10+ interviews. I think I'm still the fewest so far with four, but, given the charting outcomes data, the 10+ seems excessive.

Ok, I'll bite. I've been a lurker here for the past couple weeks, trying to pass the time until Match Day. I have a sort of random list. I'm basically burnt out on living in a large city, so I mainly stayed away from them. I looked for places where you could have a life outside of residency and offered good outdoor recreation.

I'm a little different than most, I'm an ER attending and I only had time for five interviews. I ranked on where I thought I could get good training and where they wouldn't kill me with hours.

That works too especially if your spouse's profession allows for greater flexibility. I'm the more "flexible" of the two of us, so I'm happy to take a back seat to him.

I'm wondering if I screwed myself for ranking uic above a couple higher tier programs. :scared: I felt like I vibed well with the people at uic and that the whole package was a good deal. Did I just close the door on the chance to be a progressive member of the field?

I don't know your personality, but for my part, my gut feeling makes up a large part of my decision. If you felt like you'd be happy there, then that's fantastic. It would mean more if you spent a month there and knew more about it (for example). You can still be a "progressive member of the field" and can certainly do a fellowship at a huge name if you feel that is important.

It was certainly one hell of a sales job. I was pretty impressed after interviewing there, but still ended up not ranking it terribly high.
 
Now that you all have your ROLs in and "certified", don't forget to post some feedback in the "residency interview feedback" section of SDN. I'm sure some of you utilized it in your application process, so if you can leave some feedback I'm sure future applicants would appreciate the updated information (especially in regards to the programs that have few reviews).
