i took my test last friday and am starting to freak out. i didnt have a single set of grouped questions. did anyone else notice that they didnt have any? i'm starting to think that i just hit the "next" button and missed them. or maybe im just paranoid. :scared:

Nah, don't worry, I think I only had one the whole thing. So no need to freak out. They make it really obvious (more so than UW) when you have them linked up, so you would not have missed it.

I was like that during the test with heart sounds because I did not get my first heart sound until the 6th block.

So as I said before, my school only gives us a couple of weeks between the end of class and the final deadline to take Boards. So it has been a mad dash.

The dash continues. But my strategy has changed. ALOT. And some things have not.

-I realized that DIT was worthless to me. So I dropped it.
-I am going to listen to all the Goljan audio.
-My USMLE World Scores have improved to about a 45% (I've only been studying a week and a half)
-I've gone through First Aid once, and am keeping the pace I wanted.
-Pharm is going ok.
-Taking an NBME on the 17th.
-Real thing on June 30.

My question is this. With the time I have remaining, after I finish my second run through of First Aid, should I take a couple of days to read my Biochem Review book?

Basically, I hate my school for giving us so little time to study. Some of you are talking about taking months to study for the exam and brush up on weak points, and we only have a few weeks. Has anyone else had a schedule like this?

What else should I be doing or NOT be doing?

I didn't have any sequential questions either.

- fellow paranoid student awaiting scores 😀

Congrats to those who are done!

Quick question for you all - which pharm areas seemed to be the most high yield? I have been going off what is written in FA, that the emphasis is on ANS, CNS, antimicrobials, CV and NSAIDS, any truth to that?

Also - does anyone else find themselves continually trying to highlight sentences on their computer after doing too many UWorld questions?

Took the test today.

It started really easy in the first block. Then the difficulty rose up. In my test I had many genetics questions. NBME 6 and 7 are pretty money generally. There was also a mix of USMLE World style questions. But all in all a fairly balanced test. I had plenty of side effects questions. Everything is a blur right now.

Someone I remember asked if any side effects of drugs WITHIN groups were asked. Most definitely. I had a one to pick out a protease inhibitor that had a specific side effect. I guessed that one.

I have that traditional feel like crap feeling right now. Hopefully I will continue the tradition of doing better than expected.

ssup guys

have my exam tomorrow. Wish me luck. I am having the day before exam panic attack, I feel like ive forgotten a lot of stuff. :scared:

Class effect: they all inhibit cyp-450,
all cause GI symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Ritonavir can cause pancreatitis.

Indinavir: nephrolithiasis: kidney stones, insignificant hyperbilirubinemia.

Saquinavir and Indinavir and Amprenavir: glucose and lipid changes that are unfavorable. Not good for diabetic patients.

Hey, good luck dude, don't let the nerves get to you. When the going gets tough, the tough get going!👍 There's hardly been anyone who's woken up with 100% confidence for this beast, so just give your best shot.

and hey, when my turn comes next tuesday, I expect some encouragement from you 😉

I'm not sure I have any good advice (since I'm posting for advice on another thread... hehe), but I wanted to tell you that I am also from a school that only gives us five weeks from end of classes to the test (and we had to fight for the fifth week... they started with four.) We also had a very heavy lecture load throughout school, so extra time for board study was almost zero (except for people who do NOTHING but study.) Anyway... just wanted to let you know that many of us are in the same boat! Hang in there, do all you can, and leave the rest up to fate (or God, or Allah, or karma, or whatever is your thing!!!) 🙂

P.S. I'm a single mom with three kids... so I KNOW how tough it is to squeeze it all into a month!!! 😱 You can do it!!! Good luck!!!

I'm a single mom with three kids... so I KNOW how tough it is to squeeze it all into a month!!!
😱 Holy...You deserve a medal just for making it this far through med school...unless you started with 4 or more kids...

Seriosuly, though, good luck. It's hard enough for me to take care of myself right now. I can't imagine what having 3 other people dependent on me would be like. My hat's off to you, madam.

Are you who I think you are? 😛

Good luck, regardless!

Hahaha... uh... ya, Ryan!!! So much for anonymity!!! I guess there aren't that many single mom's with a tribe of little monkeys on SDN!

Love the profile pic, by the way!!! Hope you killed the beast, my friend!!! :luck: Do you have any words of wisdom for me?

I knew it! 😀

haha... if you check the last post on the previous page you can see that it was a huge trainwreck-- my advice is to not do what I did. And by that I mean make sure your driver's license isn't expired (also had a death in the family a couple days before my test, but I guess that's not something you can try to prevent).

I'm sure you'll do great. My only advice is (1) don't freak out, you'll do great, and (2) make sure you bring a non-expired government-issued form of ID with you to the test . If you have any specific questions on anything though don't hesitate to ask me, I'm always available. 🙂

Actually got my scores last week, but have been out-of-town and not around to post.

245/99 Yeah!!!! 🙂 I'm so happy. Like many of you I thought the test was hard and left feeling drained. I didn't think I could possibly do as well as I had done on practice exams. But, it turns out that I did. (See my earlier post around 5/14 or so for full story).

Those that just took the exam: Don't worry. You probably did better than you think!

Good luck all!

Didn't want to post a new thread on this, though it may be deserving of one...

For those who have or haven't gotten your scores back, there are several pieces of data I think we'd find interesting (those of us who have yet to take the test):

1) What was your % correct in UW (or whatever Qbank you used)?
2) What was your board score (if you know)?
3) What was your UWSA estimated score (if applicable)?
4) What was/were your NBME score(s) (if applicable)?

1) What was your % correct in UW (or whatever Qbank you used)? 92% on last 500 questions, random/timed/unused.
2) What was your board score (if you know)? (will fill in later)
3) What was your UWSA estimated score (if applicable)? UWSA 1 and 2 were both 800/265.
4) What was/were your NBME score(s) (if applicable)? NBME 6 and 7 were both 262.

1) What was your % correct in UW (or whatever Qbank you used)?
75% total, 100% used on random, timed blocks. Last few blocks the week before were 85-100%
2) What was your board score (if you know)? Crossing my fingers for finding out a week from now.
3) What was your UWSA estimated score (if applicable)? 258 (Assessment #2)
4) What was/were your NBME score(s) (if applicable)? NBME 4: 244. NBME 5: 255. Free 150: 255.

Nice.

1) What was your % correct in UW (or whatever Qbank you used)? 85% overall
2) What was your board score (if you know)? Unknown as of now
3) What was your UWSA estimated score (if applicable)? 800/265
4) What was/were your NBME score(s) (if applicable)? Before classes were over: NBME4: 255; 4 weeks before test: NBME6: 260

I'm considering taking the free 150 at the test site. I've read that they overestimate the score but Id like to know by how much, and how closely they predict the real score.

That's gonna be diff to answer.I have read some cases where people took the exam next day after the free 150 and it actually did predict well within few points tantamount to the NBME's.

On the other hand ,I've also seen cases wherein people recorded an over predictive realm, mostly from people who took the test before they started studying.

My best estimate would be +/-20 points.:xf:
Sorry for not helping much.😳

I am glad to finally have my score & post.

I hope my experience helps/encourages those who have yet to take on Step 1...

I studied for 5 weeks, didn't crack a review book throughout my 1st 2 years. I used FA & UWorld only. If there was something in FA that I didn't quite understand/remember the details to, I looked it up quickly on Wikipedia or (rarely) in BRS physio or path. I did NOT add in/annotate things from those books into FA. I just read a little explanation if I was confused. I did annotate UWorld into FA. I wanted to complete UWorld, but I am super slow to study, so in 5 weeks, I studied probably 99% of FA & only 37% complete in UWorld. I had 61% correct cumulative. I took 1 practice test - 1 week before the big day - 226.

When I took the real test, I felt like the questions took me way more time than the practice test. With NBME 7 - I had time at the end of each section to write down the questions I was unsure about and wanted to look the answers up to. Sometimes 10 min extra. But, on the exam, I would almost RUN OUT of time in every single section. I feel as if I had more time, I could have done better. If I saw a Q that took calcs or longer reasoning, I just quickly picked something and moved on. I was marking ~ 1/2 of the questions as well. I would have liked to review them, but no time. I took a RR break btwn every section to have some water & try to chill out. I was a bit flustered over the whole timing thing.

Got my score today: 239/99. Woo-hoo! Praise God!!

Some interesting facts - made a 27 on my MCAT. Also, I think the strategy of studying as hard as possible for your classes helps. I'm glad I didn't skimp out at the end of the year with my class exams by trying to fit in Step 1 study early. Also, I did study for 2 wks of finals (NBMEs) before the 5 weeks of Step 1 study, but it was half-a**. I took several days of that off and never finished 30% of each subject in FA. I am super slow when studying! But, I'm sure it added something.

OK! Happy to contribute! Blessed it turned out so amazing! 😍

Yay, a normal person on SDN! Except your score is very SDN-worthy, don't get me wrong, it's just nice to see some numbers in my area & a more 'average' study technique 🙂 CONGRATS & thanks for the encouragement!

Hey!!! BIG CONGRATS!!! 👍 That IS encouraging!!! 😀😀😀 Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!!! I'm gonna keep this in my mind as I tackle this seemingly insurmountable mountain of facts over the next two weeks!!!

Man, I couldn't sleep and I decided to come online.VOILA , saw your post and feelin much better👍 Been going nuts and losing sleep and mind with barely few days left.Even though I have done fairly well with school grades and all ,I still don't think I am gonna be fair and even with this thing.

Gonna be so glad when it's done with.People like you help my morale a great deal.Good work and party hard🙂

I only used First Aid and then these 3 Qbanks. Its really all you need. Our school gave us 5 weeks to study and so thats all I studied. Congrats to all who are done and keep pressing on to those that aren't. You can do it. Thousands have done it before us.

I've seen posts from people who are in their first year or even pre-med. Don't worry about Step 1. Just stud for your classes. If you learn it well the first time then it comes back very quickly.

I should add, I listened to Goljan lectures when I was working out too. It was a nice study break. I can't stress how important it is to just keep calm, exercise daily, go to bed early and wake up at a regular time.

I would let somebody cut off both my pinky toes for a 278.

i m doubting it

I seriously would. I don't care much for those toes. I got one that is all jacked up anyways. But, I would only do it under general anesthesia.

Although I might chicken out at the last moment.

I'm glad you didn't commit your left nut. Pinky toes aren't so bad.

Yeah I considered all appendages/nuts and decided the pinky toes would be the only things I would part with. Need hands to do surgery. Need nuts for many reasons.

?!?!?!?!?!

FA and Qbanks only will get you a CCLXXVIII!? holy cow! I know what I'm studying next spring, lol

I finished my test several hours ago and wanted to share some comments that are fresh on my mind. Recommendations:

(1) Buy or borrow Goljan audio pathology. The rumors are true. He knows what's on the exam. No lie.

(2) Know the general characteristics that separate bacteria from one another. For instance, know the sections that separate bacteria in facultative this and that and obligate this and that. Don't get bogged down in knowing every tiny detail about every bug. This is the memorization intensive part of First Aid (relatively speaking of course), and you must devote a lot of attention to it since it can be the trickiest if you don't pay enough attention to detail. It's more important to know the general difference between bugs than the details about a particular bug if that makes sense. BRS micro cards are excellent, trust me!

(3) Behavioral sciences is important for sure. "What do you next?" type questions that you really can't prepare for. The statistics part, you can though and you should! Know the tables on EVERY page of FA.

(4) Review the "Rapid Review" the day before the exam. It can't hurt.

(5) It may be a little late for this now but Kaplan and UWorld are comparable. I don't care what anyone says (in favor of) UWorld. Both are worthwhile for sure. The test is geared toward clinical questions now making these Qbanks all the more important.

(6) If I had to study again, I would have focused more of my attention to the memorization intensive subjects (biochem and micro) since logic won't get you far in these subjects.

(7) It seems that anatomy is the killer for many people. Know the major muscle groups of the extremities and abdomen and be able to identify them in different cuts and angles. Simple as that!

Slayed the beast today.

A brief synopsis:

The best way I can describe the test is in reference to a UWORLD random block. I would say that most of my blocks consisted of about 35 70-80% (ie the % answered correctly on uw), 5-8 40-50% and 4-6 10%.

Most of the questions I had were very, very easy. Some were totally impossible and ridiculous. I really didn't feel like there was that much in between. In the end I felt very, very good when I walked out of there.

For prep:

We had a cumulative final that I studied about 10 days for using Goljan, and basically pharm and micro class notes/charts that were passed down from years past.

After my final, I did 1st year subjects for about 10-12 days using FA, followed by 2nd year stuff again for another 10-12 days using FA and skimming Goljan again. Throughout the final 3-4 weeks I was doing 2-3 random timed blocks of Uworld. I spent my last 3-4 days redoing my marked Qs from Uworld.

Uworld, as everyone says, was by far and away the best resource. FA was next. Goljan is good, but not the most high yield and takes a long time to skim even. You really, really could get by on going through FA twice and Uworld alone.

I took a school sponsored NBME basic science comprehensive before studying, UWSA 1 after going over 1st year stuff, and UWSA 2 plus the free 150 on the same day after the second year stuff 4 days before the real deal.

Will post more once I get my score on the 14th. (Or sooner)

Dirt, would you mind sharing your practice scores ? UWSA 1/2 and NBME scores? UWorld % correct? etc.l (and any input on how they compared to the actual exam)

Done today

Exam was very tough. And now I'm feeling depressed. NBME examiners REALLY, and I meant it, REALLY can pull out stuff you may never have imagined.

Maybe it's because I just didn't do as well as I wanted to. I'd write a detailed overview when I have recovered from this shell shock. And in 7-8 months, I'd be giving Step2 🙂

Sorry to hear that you don't feel good about it. Keep in mind that the exam is curved and that some of these off the wall questions you mentioned may very well have been experimental. Now go try to have fun and put this thing behind you!

Hey thanks for encouragement 🙂 Yes but still it just looks like post-exam blues. I was just surprised at how they can strike at you in the exam and totally break that confidence! I guess now the result would tell the story. July 15th I guess would be when all the results have been compiled for the new format.
