***OFFICIAL*** 2011 OMFS interviews thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dear colleagues
How do you prepare for your interviews and do you take anything with you like a portfolio, and if yes, what should be included in that portfolio?
I am told to be at the hospital from early in the morning until the evening, is this a typical interview day, do they take me into the operation theaters? Will I be the only candidate on that day or are there other interviewees too?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you for your help.

Will you be in the DFW area this week? :scared:

Katy,
I agree with what the others said; you do seem a little unfamiliar with this whole process for someone at this stage of application. But I will try help out.

Wear a suit. Bring a pen (some applicants bring note pads/folders to take some notes). Do not take notes during the individual interviews.

Usually, a program will have 2-3 interview dates and will have (depending on how many spots there are to fill) 15-30 interviewees split among the different dates. So, you will be there with several other applicants, whom you should get to know because your future co-residents could be among them.

Now, every program does it differently, but generally they will have an opening presentation, tours of the facilities (clinics, hospitals, dental schools, med schools, or even other associated hospitals that may be in other towns), individual interviews with the different attendings and sometimes residents, and other presentations. Usually, the programs will provide breakfast and lunch, and some will have dinners/banquets if it's a 2-day interview. If it's a 6-year program, you will have an interview with med school representatives also. At most places the residents will try to do something fun in the evening, and you should definitely partake.

As far as the actual interviews, you will usually have several one-on-one interviews with the attendings, but some programs will have you interview 2 or 3 people at a time, or even one interview with a big panel of all the attendings (this one can be kind of intimidating). I think in one of the med school interviews (Vanderbilt, iirc) they had several applicants interview at the same time.

You will not, as far as I know, be taken into the OR at any of the interviews, so don't worry about that.
Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun.

Reimbursement for the Interview expenses

I will be travelling from overseas to an interview, is usually the cost for the travel and accommodation reimbursed by the interviewing University or is it all self sponsered? Is it common to ask for reimbursement?

Thank you for your advice

NO! This is not a job interview, its a resident interview, and reimbursements are not the norm.

So I know 2 groups have gone through Banner-Good Samaritan AZ now.

What's the deal with them? Any updates or expansions? How are they looking?

They are poised to be an AWESOME program.

Edit: Are the 2 first year residents on SDN? If so, PM me. I want to hear everything.

Is it pretty much a sure thing that if the above listed programs didn't send you an interview by now that we should stop expecting anymore?

Does anyone ever get any interviews after the first release date?

There is still some hope, as interview dates grow closer, people make decisions and cancel so you might get some late invites. But by this point most programs have released all their initial interviews.

Get with the program lady! You have asked the most ridiculous questions ever. I.E. will the programs pay for my flights and hotels? But I ll help you with the above questions:

1. Yes take a portfolio with your visa, passport, a lot of money, and try to bribe all the attendings so you get in. Also bring a paper that reads I AM WITH STUPID with an arrow pointing to you.

2. Your interview will last from 7 AM to 11 PM and everyone is going to stop their busy day. PS...The only person they will interview that day is you.

3. When you get into the operation theater they will have you scrub in and do the surgery. Before the surgery starts they will give you the option to buy popcorn and/or candy. Be sure to sneak in a drink 😱

I hope you are grateful for my help. This advice will help you get in anywhere!

PS....stop using this forum for stupid questions

Jeez, I just choked on my soda reading this. Hilarious!

Are there no more updates on interview dates?

In addition, how many have received calls from programs after cancellations from other candidates?

They didn't specifically say that was the reason, but I'm pretty sure I got a couple because they were later.

Today, email for 12/17 (probably other days though)

Harbor UCLA interviews for the 20,21,22,23, AM and PM spots, show up at your specific time, no reception, panel interview

for anyone else interested in the LLU 4 year spot... warning... this may offend you if you are a LLU resident... I am thoroughly annoyed by them completely wasting my time and money bringing me down there for an interview when I feel it is quite obvious that the spot is going to the intern that is there now. Great guy, LLU dental grad, been interning there all year, only one other interview, wants to go there... just give the guy the spot and don't waste our time!
Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Seems like a great program though

Get your match lists in early tomorrow. Don't let a computer error ruin things.

Get it in, get your confirmation, lock it or whatever it is you do.

Don't be doing any last minute changes....

The Rank Lists are submitted and there is nothing more we can do to help or hurt our chances to get in this year. 🙂

My goal is to relax and forget about it for the next two weeks even though the anxiety is abundant! Good luck everyone!

So now that your lists are locked in... what are programs that got you hot and which ones gave you bad vibes?

I went to Nebraska, Emory, Parkland, Alabama, UCSF, Louisville, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, UNC, Baylor, Gainesville, and San Antonio.

I actually thought all were pretty top notch programs. I'd definitely recommend all of 'em. It really kind of depends what you are looking for in a program. I wanted very core OMS with solid trauma experience. Most on this list fit that description very well.
