Official 2012-2013 Cardiology fellowship application cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think step scores are very important to most programs. Some websites even said they didn't need USMLE transcripts or MSPE letters, so I wouldn't sweat your CS history. I'm sure things will work out.

Has anyone contacted program directors to explain geographical preferences you may have? If a program has already issued interview invitations and I didn't get one but am very interested in that program, should I contact the director or have a letter writer contact them? I know I've talked to people who matched in years past that did that, but now that the match/interview schedule has changed so much I'm confused. Does anyone know when that should come into play?

If a program has sent out interviews the ppl and I did not get one, do I assume a rejection or is there still chance that they send a second batch of interviews?

Sadly it's means you have not been invited for interviews aka rejection. 🙁

Sadly it's means you have not been invited for interviews aka rejection. 🙁

Are you a cardiology attending who is involved in giving out interviews or someone who have gone through this interview process before? I am just wondering how you know that not being invited so far by a program that has already offered other candidates interviews means that you are not going to be invited in the future. I would greatly appreciate your input.

thanks for setting this up.

so far for me...applied to 58

I have decided to offer a 'grace period' of another 2 weeks to ERAS. If I don't receive anything from that website or anything from the programs, then I'm starting job hunt for a hospitalist position!! 🙂

University of Louisville has asked to wait until their new program Director is able to review the applications. Hopefully in next 10 days.

This is completely wrong. It means that you weren't invited in the first round. There are always multiple rounds of interview offers.

I hope you are right and I am wrong 🙂
It seems programs are currently mostly offering only 2-3 interview dates. If you are right than they may have to offer more dates.

FYI - I received an interview from FL/Jacksonville today even though someone posted they received an invite several days ago. There's still hope a program has already sent invites 🙂

I was wondering if anyone here knows about the Cedars Sinai program in Los Angeles . Is it really a good program? How does it compare to other programs in west coast like UCLA , Stanford , UCSF and UCSD? Thanks for ur thoughts!

Very, very strong program. Great clinical training which I'd rank at (or even above) those other programs. From what I've heard, cath volume there is very good (Cedars Sinai is a big hospital). Really big transplant program if you're interested in heart failure. If I was amenable to moving to the West Coast, it'd be one of my more highly coveted programs. Folks from my program who interviewed there REALLY liked it.

Hello all!! Congrats to all of those who have received interview invitations!!
I have received so far 5 rejections after applying to 118 programs..!!!! YES... I am very desperate and stressed out...anyways..I will keep applying until I get in 🙂
See below my rejections:

Rejections:
Univ of Michigan 8/9
Duke 8/13
St Luke's Episcopal 8/13
Hennepin County (I talk w an insider and they already took two internal candidates so dt expect invitations).

Kind of in the same vein, friends who interviewed there last cycle really liked it. They all put it near the caliber of UCLA. Great heart failure/ transplant, especially with the new group who really increased the volume.

Not sure how Cedars and UCLA compare to the other Cali programs.

Anyone hear anything good or bad from chicago schools I don't see them on the list at all :-(.

I didnt get any iv/rej so far so just wondering.

My anxiety is also gradually rising with no invitations and 4 rejections (Hennepin County, Columbia NYP, Duke, St.Lukes/Texas Heart); I am not in a panicky mood yet. Not trying to be arrogant, but I think I have a decent CV. However, I assume my weaknesses are coming from a community program, albeit good one, and being an IMG, if that matters; no visa issue. Not sure how this new application timeline will factor in 2013 fellowship.

A friend got an interview from Northwestern- it was fairly short notice since interview is next week
UofC hasn't started interviews yet, as far as I know

not sure about the others-- Rush, Loyola, etc

checking my email during break between ABIM sessions. Had high expectations on this week but so far has been disappointing.

Adding Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philly

From Albert Einstein Medical Center Philly invite it seems if candidates don't confirm by sep they will offer interview slots to others. So if this is true for other programs because of interview date conflicts or unable to take time off etc than they may be another wave of invites later next month. So hang in there every one.

If a program has sent out interviews the ppl and I did not get one, do I assume a rejection or is there still chance that they send a second batch of interviews?

similarly, if a program has sent out rejections and I have not received one, is there a hope that my application is still being considered? or does it mean my application is not even worth a rejection?😀

No IV's and 2 rejections so far. Disappointing. I thought cardiology was getting less competitive with reimbursement cuts but looks like there are still many fans out there applying.

So, congrats on the invites! and don't worry about columbia it seems everyone is getting love letters from them.

I still stand by my prior statement. If you don't get anything by Aug 31 then it's time to panic. All these programs get between 300-700+ applications and it does take time to go through the ones that make the cut.

As PC said in another thread, we have done whatever we could at this point. Its just a waiting game now. Good Luck :luck:

Count yourself lucky. Even if Michigan is considered a "good academic program", living in Michigan sucks... but Ann Arbor is at least better than Detroit.
