Hi Argentina09 - i went through some of your old post and was just wondering if you applied last year and had like 5 interviews and didn't match? I'm so scare just to think that you got 5 interviews but had to apply again this year.

Senior fellow once told me that all Heme/Onc programs that are accredited have to follow the same guidelines to maintain accrediation. Still he said the two things that vary the most is the BMT and Benign Heme exposure.

Personally, I would ask each program how many allo BMTs that they do a year. Also during the interview day I would ask how clinically diverse is the heme continuity clinic. Solid tumors seem like it is the most consistent across the different programs.

I had 11 interviews and did not match, only went to 10th. I don't know if there were more applicants last year, will see. each experience is different, some people got less interviews and they match..😉
so stay positive and focus!

Thank you! I am more interested in Solids, but point well taken. Thank you for your input!

Do you feel like it's a visa issue? 10 is usually a pretty safe number. Were there any difficulties on the trail? That is a scary thought through so many interviews not to match.

I have a green card, Palliatie Medicine fellowship, 2 publications, some clinical research experience..maybe was not the right time for me..I don't know..😉

do you know how many people in average do not match every year?

There are 230 people that did not match then? is quite a big number if that is the case that was for 2011 not for 2012.. I am hoping last year the number of applicants was higher hence less spots, and this year will be better? I don't know, working on research now..hoping for the best!

Yeah 2011 class I think. It's the newest pub they have that I'm aware of. Last year was probably worse given it was the combo of two classes.

That is what I am thinking anyways, I have been a Hospitalist for 2 years in order to get my GC, maybe that was against that I was not a fresh out of residency candidate..now doing a fellowship in experimental therapeutics, hopefully this will help..anyways glad to see more "average: candidates in the forum, last year was all about the stellar candidates, and did not feel the forum was as helpful for me..hopefully this year both groups will be represented so we can help each other..
I admire the stellar candidates..😉

Having a different thread for you guys might be better? Just a suggestion. Despite what programs say, a lot of programs still prefer AMG's even if you have citizenship. So the challenges you guys might be facing will be different to what we face. Good luck with the process.

I thought my application is compititive, however i have no interviews so far.
Maybe interviews come in waves and i will be in the second one.

But what about NYC? And did buffalo univer. Start sending interviews.

Still early in the game even for MD/PhD unless you did amazing things with your PhD already🙂 I will prolly start panicking if I don't have any by mid to late August!

what we need is HOPE and a few good posts of people who have made it with not so stellar credentials will do just that.. any fellows (AMG and IMG) who have made last year and the year before with average credentials?? We would love to hear more about you and your experiences on how to improve your overall chances.

almost all of the programs have downloaded my application except for Stanford. On their website, it states that Sept. 1st is the deadline. when do they normally download applications? July 31st? Anyone from previous years can share your experiences with Stanford? I know it's a tough place to get in.. even for superstar. i'm only an average applicant who just want to tell my grand kids that I applied there.

Why would having a separate thread help? There is barely any news here to start. One year from now everyone is going to be fellows together like it or not.

IMGs prolly face different issues and an AMG thread won't help them much. They may get info that is much more relevant to them in an IMG thread than an AMG thread. No need to get so defensive BTW!!

Stanford prefers AMG/Canadian grads and they make it abundantly clear on their website!

One of the major purposes of this thread is for everyone to share their interview progress and their "creds" to give them an idea of which programs do and do not consider each type of applicant. It is mostly useful for programs where their websites do not reveal all this information. I'm pretty sure everyone finds this thread useful, AMG or IMG. BTW.

very true, myfoot. have they downloaded your application? perhaps, the reason why they didn't download my application is b/c i'm an IMG with US citizenship? 😍

They cant screen before they download.

Of course, but the comment was about setting expectation and was not about download.

I can understand your anger/frustration. You might be the best thing under the sun, but it ain't about your skills or competence, so no need to get so defensive. You have to understand that programs have the right to pick an AMG over an IMG even if an IMG has a PhD. Defensiveness is borne out of either insecurity or overconfidence, neither might serve you well on the interview trail.

An AMG thread might not provide the info that IMGs want. It was just a suggestion. I wish you luck.

My brother will borrow something like 350K dollars for his american education, I completed mine as an IMG basically for almost nothing. I really understand the point of the american students.

I was referring to QV's post about Stanford.

I was not being defensive, but rather pointing out that you are not being exactly helpful with your statements. I was disagreeing with your point about separate threads. Also, I am not an IMG.

I agree, I think the thread should be inclusive , that is all. I don't mean to be defensive, but I did not like the comment about a separate thread. I am aware of the differences, but also aware of all the things we have in common. At the end of the day we all want to get into a fellowship and be good Doctors for our Patients.😍:luck:

I believe what "myfoot" (were you interested in being a Pod?) might be trying to say is that IMG are in a different league compared to AMG and an AMG getting an interview at MD Anderson with certain creds may not mean that an IMG with the same creds will get it too. The thread cant be inclusive for that reason. It caters to a different group of applicants.

It would be helpful if you just told us a few basic things about your app: AMG vs IMG: "Tier" of your IM your program, and basic research info, i.e. 1-2 pubs. Nothing specific. Just sayin...

I need some help with these:

--a few of the top tier programs have notified multiple times that my application is being reviewed - is it suppose to mean anything.
-- another program is asking me to submit my PDs LOR to the program, this is inspite of me submitting my Chief of Div/Chair of Med LOR and also 2 more. At this juncture am unable to send additional LORs via ERAS.
Any suggestions??

thank you for your comments about setting expectation... did you happen to have your Stanford application downloaded today?

it's good that you get these requests because I used the Chair letter for a few of my programs but got no feedback. did you write them back? you can ask your PD to send his/her LOR directly to the programs if needed.

i agree with this approach. The purpose of this forum is to help med students, 1st and 2nd year residents on how to prep for Hem/Onc fellowship.. we all would like to know what it takes to make it there...Sure, for IMG, the bar might be set higher and we all know that.. Of course, we always have to right to share what we want to share and not what we don't want to share. I wouldn't be offended if someone ask me to share my credential when I don't feel comfortable sharing. 😍

Finally a break from the silence

UTenn - 7/31, dates sept 20, 27, 10/4, 10/11

I did not apply to programs in the southwest. A buddy of mine said that some Cali programs did not download yet. BTW, don't take my comment the wrong way. You might be better than an AMG, but some programs prolly just prefer to take their own. Good luck with the process.

thanks, buddy. don't worry. I totally understand how the system work. And good luck to you, too. 😍

UNC Chapel Hill- dates in september/october -any inputs about this program ?

Ok program. 5 spots every year. New PD this year. Haven't seen IMG there for a few years.

Very strong in lung and H&N, OK in GI. Used to be kind of weak in breast but picked up steam thanks to the shenanigans across town a few years ago.

I have a couple of friends on faculty there.

@ Gutonc: which program is strong in GU cancer? Thanks.

@ Gutonc: which program is strong in GU cancer? Thanks.

Plenty of them.
Off the top of my head (which is to say the ones I'm familiar with...there are no doubt plenty of others):
UW
OHSU
Hopkins
MSKCC
MDACC (but you can say that for just about anything)

I actually have less than no interest in GU cancer though so somebody who cares about it might be a better guide.

Do you think if you have an interest in a specific area like breast or colon are the strongest programs the one with SPOREs in that area?

What programs excel in these areas outside of the SPOREs?

Thanks gutonc.
