Nephro07--Emory on the 8th of Aug

So I guess UPENN is still sending out Invites.

bmarow-->I Did not apply to any NYC programs except for the outskirts. So I am not sure how good or bad the program is. Hoping someone here could shed some light about the quality of that program.

What are your thoughts staten island university ,NY nephro program. On the fence whether to attend the IV or not.

IV invite from UPMC on a weekend.. Looks like the email I got earlier asking me to wait for 2 weeks was not a rejection after all!

Received interview from Harvard Beth Israel, Washington University of St Louis, University of Pittsburg, University of Texas SW, university of Missouri, Westchester centre.

...when I remembered this was the nephrology thread.

IV from: UCLA, Duke, UPENN

Not heard from: UCSF, UCSD, Mayo, Northwestern, UChicago, UColorado, UNC, Johns Hopkins, Yale (except for acknowledgement today)

IV from Yale, 2 hours from the time they said they started looking at it. They're pretty fast once they get to it. 🙂

So far, I've gotten interviews from Loyola (Chicago), UC Davis, Kaiser Permanente (LA), Northwestern, Iowa, and Wash U.

My advise would be to not go to more than 4 or 5 interviews and save your time and money

Most of the applicants matched in top 3 choices last year

Nephrology programs have received even fewer applications this year for example my program has received 40 applications for 3 spots down from 60 last year and they plan to interview half of them as there were several cancellations last year

Thanks for the advice.... its definitely a pain trying to schedule interviews while having clinical responsibilities

IV from henry ford/wayne state

nephro 007- not yet decided on the date for case. difficult time scheduling because of limited dates

Hi all. Was wondering if I could get some input regarding your opinions on the Nephrology programs at University of Washington (Seattle) and UCSF. What are their strenghts and weaknesses? If you could have your pick, which would you choose?

Also, has anyone heard back from Loma Linda University?

IVs from henry ford, Allegheny general Hospital and Stony Brook University

Both are huge with wanting their fellows to go into academics following training. The program director from UW came from UCSF, so he tries to model the UW program after UCSF. If you interview, you must give every impression that you will be research heavy and want academics. Merely giving them the impression that you may want to do community private practice is a big red flag for either of those two. Between picking the two, choose which city you like better and who you thought was nice on interview day......other than that.....both huge on academic careers possibly more than anywhere else except for the Harvard program. They both have their share of snotty academic types, but that may be your thing. In addition both programs have academic research heavy tracks or a physician educator track, which is also academic in nature.

thanks pH74...

Any Canadians out there??- I have been having trouble getting an answer as to if the government will supply a letter of need since it's not considered "in need", I know this was an issue last year as well- I contacted them to see if the situation changed for this year and they said although they haven't made a final decision it is unlikely.

Anyone know a way around this?? Aside from doing a waiver and then applying.

I understand the job market but for me there's no other choice...for better or worse I LOVE nephrology- even if i work as a hospitalist and do research/ teaching on the side because I can't get a nephro job i'll be content. I want the training and I want the option to find a job in nephro (even if it's not going to happen right out of fellowship). The Kidneys make me happy 🙂 and doing anything else is not an option.

Same as last year, nephrology is not on the list for Canada. The final decision has been made in July that nephrology is not eligible for a Statement of Need from Canada and requests for exceptions will not be accepted. This info comes from the health canada statementof need email.
