*~*~*~* Official 2015-2016 Interview/Acceptance/Rejection Thread *~*~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, for those who had an interview at LECOM in January, we find out Feb. 4. They told me the status on AADSAS will update. Good luck, guys.

I am worried. It is Februarry already and so far I had only one interview at BU, and they just sent me a rejection letter. Here are my stats:

DAT academic: 20
DAT science: 19
GPA academic: 3.4
GPA sciense: 3.6

Schools that I have applied and results:

university of south california - interviews are still open
Western University of health sciences - last interview 2/6
Georgia regents university - Denied
University of Louisville - Application Completed
Louisiana State - Denied
Boston University - Denied
Creighton University - I will probably get on the waiting list, or denied.
U of medicine and dentistry of new jersey - Denied
NYU - Class is not full yet
University at Buffalo - will know by 2/6
Temple university - still voting on my application
Medical University of south carolina - Denied
Stonybrook - under review

I just want to know, is there still a chance that I will get into a dental school this year?

Unfortunately, from what I understand and heard, Louisville is done with interviews 🙁. They had 2 interview days towards the beginning of January. I'm not sure if there's anyone else who knows more, but from my understanding they might not be interviewing anymore.

Rejected Without Interview from Columbia

DAT: 24/24/18
GPA: Sgpa 3.63 overall 3.67

Acceptances: UPenn, CWRU, Stony Brook, UMichigan, Nova

Of course there's a chance. Why don't you add Touro (the new school in NY)? They recently statedr taking applications.

Interview #6.

School: Touro College of Dental Medicine
Notification date: 2/3
Method of notification: email
Residency: Washington
AADSAS mail-out date: 7/2
Application complete date: 7/10
GPA (science, overall) 3.47, 3.56
DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading/any section below a 17): 20/21/19/22/QR:16

Official rejection from Michigan, no interview - they wouldn't accept my application because one of my two science recommendation letters was from my research PI, and not a "professor with which I had a 3 credit class". I'm sure a teacher in a big lecture would know me better than my research prof who I'm published with...

same boat as you...oh well. btw someone told me UMich accepts solely based on your interview score (MMI format) and do not consider your other stats? that's scary to think about lol.

also off-topic, but we need more Rick and Morty Love up in this forum.

Don't give up! By the way, are you sure that Western University had their last interview on 2/6? Because I just got an email from Andrea Nuno stating that my application is still with the admissions committee. So maybe, there's still hope for you there? Good luck!

If you are rejecting interviews, I assume you have been accepted and decided where to go. What school will you be attending?

Yes, I have listed my acceptances earlier in the thread. I haven't made a final decision. I have complicated and unique family circumstances so it's very difficult for me to decide right now. Also, I am still waiting to hear from other schools.

Why? I'm not up to date with SDN, I don't stalk it like everyone else does.
It may be because you asked if he or she is a minority, which is often asked when somebody with a 17 AA is admitted. Truth is, I just looked on the ADA book and 26 schools admitted students with an AA of 14 to 16, and the vast majority admitted students with AA of 17. It's not as rare as some people here seem to think to admit a 17AA, although the odds certainly improve the higher you score. 45 schools admitted students with an AA 17 or higher. Probably even more than that, as some schools such as Midwestern AZ and Howard did not report their DAT ranges. Only Harvard and Columbia didn't accept anybody with an AA below 20, and add UCLA to that as the only 3 schools not to accept anybody with an 18 AA or lower.

Hmm sounds about right. Thanks for clarifying.

Being a minority isn't the only factor that played into my acceptance. Good character, leadership and my experiences is what lead me towards acceptance. I belonged there.
I only put myself out here on SDN with my low stats to show others that DAT scores and GPA aren't everything, and to never give up or let others discourage you. If you want something badly enough, you will do whatever it takes to achieve your desires. Good luck everyone!

the best applicant should get the spot, the person who shows the most worth as a candidate, theres a reason you need good grades to get in usually, while we should take into account someones struggles in socioeconomic status, race and or ethnicity shouldn't be given so much credence, were becoming doctors, our future occupation entails the responsibility of looking after the health of another human being, you need a certain level of intelligence to be able to handle that, thats why grades and dat matter so much, and like I mentioned its understandable that certain socioeconomic disparities can be mitigating factors in having lower grades, but you should still have at least average/ decent grades, because that proves you can handle dental school, and ultimately that you have the potential to take on the gravity of what it is to be a doctor/dentist etc

I agree! Completely. For my case, I struggled the first few years of undergraduate. But after that maintained above a 3.7 GPA. Unfortunately it still didn't help significantly. I worked hard to get here because I refuse to let my past struggles stop me from following my goals and dreams. I'll do just fine in dental school.

I wish you the best of luck 🙂 anyone who is willing to work hard, and can prove they have what it takes intellectually deserves to get in, regardless of where they come from 😀 congrats on getting in!

I guess I should also make clear that I don't come from a family that struggles in socioeconomic status. Parents paid for college. Is that what being a "minority" means? People from disadvantaged backgrounds? I wouldn't catagorize myself as a minority in that case.

no, I think generally for these kinds of things, like professional school, it's more about ethnicity than socioeconomic status, its referred to as urm I believe

I'll ask the question we all want to know.
Where are you choosing to go to? Are you going to be rejecting the tufts interview?

Edit: Nice Scores by the way!

I agree and disagree. Yes, this profession needs the most qualified applicants, but don't be too quick to judge. I was recently having a conversation with a member of an admission committee who was also a preceptor/instructor in the detnal clinic. She was telling me that she has seen the "best applicants" be admitted and while having perfect test scores and high "intelligence" they completely lack emotional intelligence and compassion, and also practical skills. This gave her motivation to become a member of the admission committee to correct the problem. She said she wants to see more well rounded applicants. And well rounded applicants aren't necessarily high gpa/dat people. These people come from different backgrounds across the world, low scores, high scores that are genuinely caring individuals. Yes, this is definitely why schools have interviews, but some of the time these interviewees are just actors/actresses trying to get into a high paying profession. At the end of the day its about the person who actually wants to be a doctor for the right reasons and wants to make a person feel better. Not the applicant whose parents are forcing professional school on them. Or the person who wants to become a dentist for status reasons. That's why diversity is very important in the healthcare field. Diversity creates a pool of dental students that will filter out those who come for the wrong reasons. IMO.

Doesn't matter you have Hispanic in you.

I have white-American friends with much lower stats than me, and they got in. We don't see many of us, URM applicants with high stats, on here complaining abut that. :soexcited:

Thank you!! Finally someone being positive! I am very happy and beyond grateful for this opportunity. Can't wait to start!
Congrats!!!

This is coming from someone who receives Bs in sciences and C in Biochem (per your posts) I guess I do, bc I'm just a realistic person and you're just looking for a short cut. Oh and "cuz" and "hella" slangs aren't going to be for your benefit in professional school. Just saying.
But "bc" will, right?
