*~*~*~* Official 2015-2016 Interview/Acceptance/Rejection Thread *~*~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree and disagree. Yes, this profession needs the most qualified applicants, but don't be too quick to judge. I was recently having a conversation with a member of an admission committee who was also a preceptor/instructor in the detnal clinic. She was telling me that she has seen the "best applicants" be admitted and while having perfect test scores and high "intelligence" they completely lack emotional intelligence and compassion, and also practical skills. This gave her motivation to become a member of the admission committee to correct the problem. She said she wants to see more well rounded applicants. And well rounded applicants aren't necessarily high gpa/dat people. These people come from different backgrounds across the world, low scores, high scores that are genuinely caring individuals. Yes, this is definitely why schools have interviews, but some of the time these interviewees are just actors/actresses trying to get into a high paying profession. At the end of the day its about the person who actually wants to be a doctor for the right reasons and wants to make a person feel better. Not the applicant whose parents are forcing professional school on them. Or the person who wants to become a dentist for status reasons. That's why diversity is very important in the healthcare field. Diversity creates a pool of dental students that will filter out those who come for the wrong reasons. IMO.
I agree with you that compassion and a genuine desire to be a doctor, as well as caring about the well being of the patient is a necessary quality as well, but all the caring and compassion in the world wont matter if the doctor isn't smart enough to understand the science of what is happening inside said patient, then, all the compassion in the world is useless, but I see your point and do agree that we need to be genuinely caring human beings as well, not just intelligent robots, but at the end of the day, grades and such are vastly important, because they are an indicator that you have the capacity to understand the complexities of the human body and become a doctor/dentist, lots of people are compassionate caring individuals, but not everyone is intelligent enough to succeed in med/dental/law/ professional school in general, I'm not trying to mean or in any way offensive, nor do I look down on people who don't become doctors/dentists, and or do not get in for whatever reason, just trying to make a simple observation, based on what seems to make sense....

Don't give up! By the way, are you sure that Western University had their last interview on 2/6? Because I just got an email from Andrea Nuno stating that my application is still with the admissions committee. So maybe, there's still hope for you there? Good luck!

I received the same email too yesterday..

I'll ask the question we all want to know.
Where are you choosing to go to? Are you going to be rejecting the tufts interview?

Edit: Nice Scores by the way!

Thanks a lot!

I've committed to UNLV already and have rejected my acceptances to LECOM and Roseman. I'm still planning to interview Tufts though!

What interview day at Tufts? I scheduled for the 29th!

Has anyone heard back from Michigan yet? For those who interviewed before Dec 1st but did not get an offer yet.

Do dental schools still closely watch your GPA after you have been accepted? Not trying to slack off necessarily, just curious hahaha

From what i've seen in interview offers and heard from acceptances they require your final transcripts and most say as long as all of the required coursework is complete you are fine, regardless of grade (assuming you don't fail). I've seen some that also say not to get lower than a C in your basic sciences, just in case anyone is still taking them (Bio II for me).

I was wondering if I could get some advice from somebody on here. I've never been as crushed as I am now. I applied to 11 schools, I got rejected from UCONN and UNC. And interviewed at all three of my instate schools (FL resident). I got waitlisted at NOVA+ LECOM, still haven't heard back from UF. I wouldn't say my stats are necessarily bad: White, 19AA, 20 TS, 22 Reading, 17 PAT, 17 QR, Bio 21, GC 19, OC 18. My science GPA is 3.78 and my overall GPA is 3.80. I have hundreds of shadowing hours, volunteering, leadership.. Well over 500 hours of research with a publication on the way, I thought my personal statement was good, and my interviews all seemed to go really well. When I interviewed at NOVA the guy interviewing me even told me he was sure I'd get accepted. Seeing how it's Feb 8th already, does anybody think I'll get in somewhere this cycle? I'm yet to hear back from NYU, CWRU, MUSC, MEH, TEMP, and VCU but I feel like I'm going to get a plethora of rejections towards the end of this month.
I don't want to sound like I'm whining, but I'm utterly depressed, it's hard to remain optimistic this late in.
Is there light at the end of the tunnel? 😢

A waitlist isn't a bad thing and sometimes schools have certain deadlines for releasing acceptances as well as interviews. I was pretty down on myself earlier after I thought my Case and Louisville interviews went well but got waitlisted and still not hearing from 6 schools. Like a lot of friends have told me, it's not over yet. There is still a lot of time and you can't get too down on yourself. One of my friends in Penn Dental told me that he knew a lot of people who hadn't gotten their acceptances until March and I have a friend who didn't get into Case until the beginning of April. Don't be too down. Schools are all different with respect to how quickly they respond as well as what they are looking for in an applicant. Try not to let all the pressure get to you! I know it's easier said than done, but I'm sure good news is just waiting around the corner for you.

I had someone say the same thing to me when I interviewed at Case, but it's not always up to the interviewer. They look at everything, as i'm sure you know, but the fact that your interviewer liked you so much speaks to how well you interviewed. We just need a little more patience, unfortunately. Something is coming!

Thank you for your kind words! I just wish I could do something about it now, you know? I guess I just have to keep waiting, hopefully some good news is coming 🙂

Sorry to hear that, im still waiting for news myself...
Do you mean you emailed Bill Liner or someone else on AdCom to ask about your status, and they replied with a rejection? Or did they send it to you independent of your email?

I emailed Bill and he replied saying that they already met earlier to pick out their final interviewees and that I hadn't been selected to interview this cycle.
