Official 2015-2016 Rheumatology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been on 2 interviews. Both programs asked about research experience. I asked about board prep, patient population, average patients on the service, how weekend call is split, opportunities for research and ultrasound exposure. Just be yourself and show that you have interest in rheumatology. That's my advice. Good luck!

Anyone else had an interview experience so far? I only applied to 1 program and luckily got the interview, but was curious what kind of things they were asking?

Has anybody out there heard from Case Western/UH or Ohio State?

I've been on three interviews so far...you basically get asked 'why rheumatology', 'what do you see yourself doing in 10 years', 'do you have questions' etc. Some interviewers have asked about my research experience.

Anybody else finding that the short interview season is making interview scheduling difficult? Seems like many programs have overlapping interview days this year.

any news from any of the other programs?? stanford..winthrop...duke...GWU...NYMC...i can't imagine they are still reviewing??

Agreed, what about UConn, Columbia & Mt Sinai NY? Seems like they have given out interviews much earlier in past years' threads.

Ohio state sent a rejection to me 2 weeks ago. NYMC rejection came i believe very early in august. Wash U rejection today
Ucolorado sent out their invites, cause i called and they said so. Whos among the lucky that got that interview?
Yea im very limited on how many interviews i can go to because of how crammed everything is. I already had to turn down 3-4 because of scheduling. Sucks

Uconn sent out invites early august , but I agree guys , I am getting worried. I haven't heard from so many programs . I keep going over my application in my head wondering if I made a mistake or if my LOR were messed up or ...i don't know what to think anymore ...I can't really imagine doing anything else other than rheum.

did you apply to just a few programs, or did you apply far and wide. There are a few programs that didnt fully match last year, id recommend contacting them saying your very interested... if your not limited to location.

I applied far and wide , how do I find out what programs that didn't fully match last year ?

denied from stanford and beth israel...
mount sinai apparently gave out a while ago

Anymore interviews? I am still waiting to hear from a few places...even on the interview trail no one has mentioned interviews at these locations---i.e. duke or emory?

its usually released by the NRMP. Its called match data and it lists how many spots a program has and how many it matched. if you cnat find it, give them a quick call.

guys what is the safe number to match for IMG's.

I think it's much more competitive than what the 2011 match data shows. More interest in the field and more applicants. I am going to all of my interviews. One of the programs I went to was interviewing 20 people for 1 spot and had internal candidates which were probably going to get the spot. Unfortunately, it was probably a waste of time and money to go, but I still went.

Yeah I'm getting the sense that things have become more competitive too.

The fellows at my program all went on a lot of interviews and matched way down their rank list. One fellow interviewed at 13 or 14 programs and matched at #7. Another did 11 or 12 interviews and matched at #5. These fellows were both FMGs, but I'm not sure how much that played into it honestly. Like you said, a lot of programs are interviewing a lot of people for 1-2 (or, at best, 3) spots, and there are clearly internal candidates vying at many of these places.

How many interviews are y'all going on? I managed to wedge in 11 when all was said and done. The short interview season and massive overlap is not helping our cause...I've had to turn down at least 5-6 interviews just because they can't be fit in anywhere.

I'm also contemplating writing reviews of programs I've interviewed at here...just debating whether to do so now or after the ROLs get submitted. With as small a world as rheum is, it would probably be very easy to identify me. I'll probably wait.

I guess the user who uploaded the comparison chart did a mistake it is not from 2011 it is from 2013 but still agree things have become more competitive. As dozitgetchahi mentioned lot of program even they have internal candidates who will get the seats for sure are still interviewing 20 to 30 people just to waste candidates time and money. 1 seat programs are another big joke. I am an IMG and got only 6 interviews where 2 programs have 1 seat so my probability of matching is equal to none according to chart. Can anybody share from their friends experience will 6 interviews will be enough to get you matched if you are an IMG.

It was published in 2013, but was the data from the 2010 match to start fellowship in 2011. http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/chartingoutcomessms2011.pdf See where it says "appointment year 2011"?

Edit: On a side note, I have no idea about how competitive rheumatology is application wise this year, but looking at the data over the last 4 years, competitiveness has been about flat. For the 2011 appointment year, there were 1.2 applicants/spot with a 72.4% match rate, and it's fluctuated around that baseline with 1.2 applicants/spot and a 77.6% match rate for 2015. http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Results-and-Data-SMS-2015.pdf See page 77 (written)/83 (pdf).

There was a fellow at one program I interviewed at who interviewed at 5 and matched #5.

Yeah really... everyone on the trail said they hadn't heard from Ohio State so I wonder wtf happened there.

Just like Raryn said, competitiveness has been comparable since 2011. I have noticed on the interview trail it seems to be 12-15 interviews per 2 spots.

so guys anybody done with interviews. I went to 6 cancelled 2 due to schedule conflict. I noticed this year many programs have interviews on the same day which is ridiculous. Two of the programs I went have only 1 seat with internal candidates. so lets hope for the best.

Anybody have any insider information about the following programs:

USC
UCSD
Cedars Sinai

Hello. Anyone know of the top rheumatology fellowship programs? Any chance for more interview invites? How many interviews are you going to?...I've heard that > 6 interviews may be overkill. Thanks in advance! :)

I believe interview invitations are over. I believe this year instead of cancelling interviews ahead of time specially when people know they will not be attending, people just simply don't show up. Can't say what is a safe number for match as met people with 20 interviews but not sure they will attend all of them but from the previous year pattern 6 seems to be a good number specially if you are an AMG.

Thank you. I've heard most rheumatology programs have good training. Can anyone comment on the top clinical programs?

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of that on the trail too...just did an interview yesterday where three of the 7 or 8 people that were supposed to be interviewing no showed.

I met a guy during an interview who got 20 interviews and told me that he will attend only 7 or 8 and when I asked did you cancel the others he said I don't have to as if I decided I am not interested I will not simply show up. So basically people like these prefer not to leave the opportunity for someone else but just simply don't show up. you are calling them unprofessional I don't even consider them human being who don't have any value to their commitments. I feel really sorry for their patients.

This is truly unacceptable behavior. You would think at this level in our career that one would be professional and be a decent human being to say the very least.
