I know this is quite early but most American Students have finished giving the test for this year.
I am an IMG and have been prepping for the steps since quite some time and have seen Phloston, Transposony's and others' threads for their respective years and how helpful they have been.

I intend on giving step in Jan.. let's share timetables, plans and other stuff on how everyone intends on taking on this beast.

P.S. : I think it is not that early.. the 2015/2016 threads were started in September/October.. but in true SDN gunner style..i wanna start it in August.. 🙂

i would take free 120 last, do the tutorial nice and slow as well. its similar to real deal and a nice confidence boost. if thats 3 days before i would do nbme 19 -1 week before exam. gives time to work on weaknesses! i worked on my two weaknesses and my score went up 17points in 6 days. i had no weaknesses on my real exam (everything was past midline)
not to mention my weaknesses were my strongest, had stars!! still in shock cardiology has a star

Congratulations on the brilliant score!!
Will be waiting for your write up.

But a quick qs, where did you do Cardiology from? It's one of my weak areas too.

Do they give you the location of the murmur (i.e. 2nd intercostal space on the right sternal border) or is it possible to have questions where its just the audio of the murmur and no other info?

If its audio they do not tell you the location but you always get info from vignette to help you. You have to listen to all areas of the heart and figure it out along with the vignette. if you do the free 120 they have the audio samples exactly as you will be presented on exam. I only had 2-3 heart sounds and 2-3 MRI's

obviously there are going to be a lot of questions that involve heart sounds with no audio

Thank you so much! 🙂

Is there any way to know if you passed before the score is released? In past forums, I read that the scheduling permit disappears... any truth to this?

I am a Non-US IMG since I have a green card, here is my story
I went to medical school in europe and did rotations in chicago

It took me approximately 9months-1year in total time to prepare for step 1 with some setbacks (ex: dad in hospital 3 times, funeral in india, stuff everyone deals with but it kept making me "restart" my studying process and it was mentally taxing.

I'm an average student and I want to give hope to anyone who has a dream of doing well on this exam. It's not easy, there are no shortcuts but if it truly is your dream you have to be motivated, work very hard and sacrifice a lot.

Everyone says to do uworld and do it throughly, obviously it works for the masses and thats great but I want to share how I did it for those of us who dont find it effective or enjoy that method. Do not get me wrong questions are extremely important, but doesn't mean you have to spend 4 hours reviewing a block.

I did all of the kaplan videos in: Physio, pharm, biochem, behavoiral, micro...at this time I did half of kaplan qbank
I did pathoma and barone path videos
I did sketchy micro
I did uworld-I finished about 65-70%, first pass i got around a 63% percent. I started at 35% and week before exam I was at 75-85%. all i did was make sure it was timed and random and looked at correct answer after and sometimes read main concept.
I did 70% usmlerx
I did DIT 2015 and DIT 2016-found this to be a great way to read through FA for the first time

I did all the NBME's: I started at a 142 and ended with a 215 on NBME 18 a week before exam
***Please do NBME's online and get feedback, invest a little money on the biggest exam.
1) make sure they are timed with 5-10 min breaks max between blocks, don't lie to yourself or look up answers
2)feel the stress as if its the real deal
3)these are things that will help you be realistic- I would take my nbmes after studying all day and then take them from like 1am-6am-i gave my self harsh conditions and a lot of stress, knowing if I could perform like that before the exam, test day could never be worse. This strategy worked to perfection.
4)review your NBME's and find the right answers for yourself-I think this is HUGE

I got 80% on free120 (after being awake over 24hours) 2 days before exam
anki cards i bought by yousmle- i didnt finish but they definitely helped with weak areas

I did thousands of questions overall but I didnt review them thoroughly, that could have helped me break 240-but maybe not, I know people who did it 3 times and didnt do so well. I refused to step 1 until my nbme was 215 or higher so I would have a cushion from failing, I figured if I went through all the material within a week via FA I could do okay.

during the last week I read FA 2016 along with 2017 PDF changes, I worked on weaknesses from NBME 18 first and also focused on question from uworld on that organ system.

study in a way thats effective for you, I did the videos i mentioned at least twice, most of them I did 3-4 times each. I figured I enjoyed and learnt a lot more by doing lecture videos than reading uworld explanations, at the end your going over the material one way or another. I rather understand it properly as a whole.

I might have missed stuff but feel free to ask anything or PM me if you like.

230+ was a dream of mine and I went hard to see if I could get close

the reddit survey had my NBME 18 215 approximating a score of 232 on step 1, the free 120 was around a 235 i believe and the uworld correlation chart I always laughed at because I was no where near what it said for 63%-234. In the end it was all pretty darn close.

REAL SCORE 232!:soexcited:(first time pass) if i can do it, anyone can

Hi let me start by congratulating you.
You really did a great job.
Very Inspiring indeed.
I have seen you. You were very sincere. Thanks for FA with corrections. You have helped me enough.
I am sure your Dad would be very proud of you.
Once again. Great Job brother!!

what was you strategy about improving weaknesses? First aid, uworld (subjectwise), pathoma?

Well,
I went to the Prometric today. I started my exam and THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN.
Like what the actual F***. LOL

The entire East Coast system shut down and I have to apply for a new permit and date...
I did 5 questions and they were easy ;p But only 5 lol

Wow.... NO COMMENT haha!!! Can't imagine what that must feel like, do you seriously have to pay for that though?

I was told that I don't have to pay etc but I called prometric/nbme and they are still figuring things out and I gotta wait.

I'm so pissed. I slept like 4 hours and was so ready to take it and then bam! Ugh. Now, I gotta wait and delay my CK exam.
Oh well, a little bit of snow and East Coast is dead lol

It's seriously so important to get easy questions when you start... It set my mind straight and I felt so ready.
Now I'm worried that next time I'm gonna get a bomb as a first question haha

Haha, I'm sorry. I'm in New York!

I'm still angry/confused.

I know, right? I'm like I don't want to go over the material again and again cause you couldn't accommodate me.
It looks like I will have to wait 1-2 weeks for the permit itself... Insane.

oh your my neighbor! I'm on the border of PA/NJ

i would be raging if that happened to me, i dont understand why they wont let you use your current permit.

this could end up hurting you, its not easy redoing everything again.

@Major procrastinator

I agree! I'm still a little scared that they will count is as my Step 1 LOL and I will fail ahaha
I'd kill them!

I called NBME and they have an automatic response (like, really???) and was told to send an email.. So, I'm waiting.
Come by!!! Let's grab beers after my Step 1 ahaha 🙂

Just weird stuff going on, olgaw007 is scoring like 60+ points below her last nbme and joanna test interrupted. Hope both are doing fine.

Does the "deadline" of the permit mean you have to take the test by that date or sign up for the exam by that date?
I had my exam postponed due to a little bit of rain... So my exam was postponed to being 4 weeks later.. The system is so ridiculous.

first time posting here
I am an IMG . finished my med school 7 months ago am in the 30% in my patch ..so am not super smart
YESTERDAY I did my exam
I know I should share my experience after getting the score , but I guess my exam experience may help those who have there exam in 3 weeks .

my experience:
6 months of slow studying : FIRST AID , PATHOMA , 50% uworld system wise offline ( started with around 60% ending with around 80% )
in those 6 months I studied around 4-6 hours /day and not more than 10 pages of first aid .. I tried to understand every single word ,,UNDERSTAND ...and thanks for google for this ..

after those 6 months I did NBME 11 offline and scored 245+ I was happy with it since my target is 240+

then I got a 2 months UWORLD subscription ..I did it RANDOM TIMED UNUSED , I finished all the questions with explanations in 1 months , I did 80 Q average a day between 6-10 hours a day . started with 80% ended with 90%

then I did my first ONLINE NBME 17 a month before the real exam : 263! I was so happy with it ...

in my NBME I was borderline in behavioral and MSS so I decided to read KHAN 101 ethics which was the best decision I made ...its a great book to read as story .. in the bus , breaks..etc

after that I revised the forgettable stuff in FA .. for example micro , some tables and stuff

after that I did my incorrect questions in UWORLD, and revised all the my highlights in UWORLD in addition th the picture .

after that 5 days before the real exam I did nbme 18 : 271!! I feel I got so much luck in it

then for 3 days I did some question of nbme offline tutor mode 😀 which was very helpful

yesterday was my big exam ... I only slept 5 hours before the exam but the adrenaline in my body did the job >>

things that would help you :
understand every single word ...understand ...know the origin of the name for every disease ...it will help alot ...
try to understand the molecular level very will ...I had a lot of questions regarding some experiments with wired enzymes names and structures ...those so called " experimental questions" I had maybe 5 or 6 of them ... after my experience I am totally sure that they are not experimental ,....I searched for then answers in the internet and all of these are real new 2015/2016 experiments and research .. the answer is in the question step and in the choices ...and I got them right with even knowing what is this ... I have marked all of them and was sure I will get them wrong .. doing a lot of nbmes will make you know what I mean

do alot of nbme for improving you test skills ...not for learning ..try to know why you answered wrong ... and improve

I had 3 developmental mile stones questions ..
I had 3 accurate lymph node drainage questions . you might get them right even without studying..but it would take time

I had 2 murmurs questions in asymptomatic patients! and it was not easy to hear like UWORLD audios ...find other source if you want to get them right .
biostat Qs were easy
don't overstudy FirstAid ...it's a waist of time ....repeating questions is better than repeating books

this is all 😀 😀
I want to thank you all for sharing your experiences and helping everyone
wish me a 255+ so that you hear my feedback after the result 😛

Yeah, it is really weird.

Honestly, I can't get over Olga's score. It's unbelievable.

I don't want to be a family physician I'll die in this specialty. I used to be a surgeon. When I moved to US I got a neck trauma in the car accident so now I can not be a surgeon (at least this is what my doctor says). But I can not imagine my life without OR. So I decided to go in anesthesiology. But now I guess my dream is over. I need adrenaline in my job. Family medicine and internal medicine would not fit my personality. I won't be happy there.
Score well on Step 2 and you'll easily match into gas a US MD, assuming you apply broadly.

Also, as far as the screening concern, those are usually only used by programs that are highly competitive. I'm sorry about your score, truly, but you'll still be able to match. You're a smart guy, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going.

you get a 3 month range in which you have to schedule your score. for example if you get april-june you must take exam by june 31 (you cant schedule a date for anything past june 31st) OR you need to extend your eligbility by 3 more months (this is the max you can do, and takes about 1-2 days to get done).

I totally agree. If she can kill step 2 and get 260+, PD will really like this and there is hope but you have to be open to IMG friendly and moving. Only apply to places with no minimum step 1 score requirement so money is not wasted by being trashed by a stupid filter

if you guys want to wait the least amount of time the best day to sit exam is a friday, after that thursday, wednesday, tuesday, monday.

wether you take on monday or friday grades are same day saturday and sunday are the longest wait

Except for those of us sitting late April - May 🙁
June 28th? Come on...that's just cruel.

If I took my exam Tuesday, March 7th, when should I expect my scores?
Best of luck for the result. Did you give NBME 19 before the exam? How was it compared to the NBME 18? And what was your score in 18 and 19? And also how was the exam compared to NBME 19? I am going to sit on 29th. Haven't given 19 yet. Was planning to give 19 on 23rd/25th. Should i give 19 only 3-4 days before the exam? What do you say about it? Thanks in advance.

Exactly what I came to ask. Exam is on the 29th. I've already taken NBMEs 13-17 as well as UWSA2 in the past 3 weeks, and all scores have placed me at very similar scores. At this point, I'm thinking of just taking NBME 18 (plus the free 120), and skipping NBME 19. I'm not sure how useful it would be after 5 NBMEs in the last month, plus the answers arent available and I won't really have time to dig for answers either.

Thoughts?

both of you guys should use NBME 18 and 19 sine they are newest NBME's and best predictors of step 1 score, most important is that they tell you weaknesses

if you do 18 today-work on weaknesses for 5 days and take 19 and work on weaknesses. Forgot the score at this point if thats already around what you want. Just focus on seeing what your weaknesses are and making them your strengths.

and yes free 120 is very important

Are endocardial cushions also formed from neural crest cells?? or are they formed from mesoderm?
in FA it says 'Aorticopulmonary septum forms membranous interventricular septum". On the same page, it sayd endocardial cushions give rise to membranous interventricular septum. So does that mean endocardial cushions develop from neural crest cells like Aorticopulmonary septum??

Exam on the 27th, just took NBME 17 and scored a 223. As the others have asked, is it worth my time to do the next 2 nbmes? I still have both UWSA, too. I'm running out of time because I feel like I should be cramming FA and working on weaknesses.. ugh it's so tough 🙁 At least my score didn't drop too much from the previous nbme 16 (225). I'd be happy with a 220 but if i'm finding the NBMEs tough I can't imagine what step will be like. :arghh:

The second half of nbme 17 seemed way simpler. I finished with like 20 mins early and ate dinner before the last block. Some questions were so easy I didn't even read them, I was like ...really? How obvious can you make this question?

NBME18: 252
NBME19: 255

Definitely take both. The exam felt familiar after doing a lot of NMBEs.

my nbme 17 dropped 14 points. i have seen that since its "easy" it has a steep curve. i was so sad i slept two days which was dumb.

highly recommend forgetting 17, work on weakness it showed and do 18

forget 220, you can get 230+. even 240 is in your grasp if you focus on FA and weaknesses hardcore

Lol, hope so.

Lots of peeps here on SDN have ridiculous NBME scores.

everyone is different but you clearly take NBME properly and you can explain everything which says a lot in itself

SDN is truly ridiculous. especially considering like 15% score greater than 250 and 2.5% score greater than 260. It makes us average guys feel like we suck lol
