Official 2018 SHPEP thread

OK so for the extracurriculars portion... If I'm part of a club what do I put as the contact? Like I wouldn't know the faculty associated with it personally if I'm just a member and its a pretty big club so I'm kinda confused...

And do they actually call because for some things I just put like the office I was associated with phone number since I feel like putting their personal phone number is kinda unnecessary and abuse of their privacy since they gave me their number for a certain purpose and I'm using it for something else...

Heyy I just found out about this great program and I know I’m like super behind. Is it still worth it to try and apply or do you think it’s pretty much full?

Hey! The deadline is actually February 15th so you have plenty of time. There is only one written response (the essay) unless you count the descriptions of your extracurriculars. And it only requires one recommendation you have plenty of time! 🙂

Hi everyone! I'm kind of late to this too but I live in VA and I'm thinking of applying to Rutgers (for sure), WesternU, UCLA, and LSU (kind of sure). I have a gpa around a 3.14 and a good recommendation from my professor in the neuroscience department at my school. I actually really want to pick UCLA as one of my options since I do like the location (and wouldn't mind transferring there to finish my undergrad either) but I want to pick the less competitive sites that are still in interesting locations. I'm thinking Rutgers as my safe school, LSU as my match school, and UCLA as a reach school? Or maybe just Rutgers, LSU, and Western or LSU, Western, and UCLA? I'm sure I'll figure it out

So excited! Everything is submitted so now for my sites it says "in review" does anyone know what that means? Will this change near the actual deadline/ when they decide?

Do they actually call the references under activities because I'm putting a club that I'm a part of but the faculty isn't involved at all their name is just the faculty associated?

Hey everyone! Applied to Columbia, UCLA, and Rutgers (rip at my chances). I'm a biochem major freshman at a small, not very well known school in Massachusetts, and have a 3.8 GPA - female, first-gen, URM, and low-income.

Might be published soon for research, but I'm also very involved in humanitarian/volunteering leadership roles (Presidential Volunteer Award, etc (don't wanna say too much for privacy reasons ofc)), and can't wait to get more clinical experience! I'm a bit worried because my application looks a lot more like an aspiring phd student's than a premed, since most of my activities are research based and my letter is also written by my lab PI and former professor. Granted, I did apply to a lot of REUs for the summer too.

They have received all of my application materials and it says the same. I believe now we just wait until March 15th for the status to change, though I know that I will probably keep checking out of habit.

Good luck to everyone. 🙂

How long did it take for you guys' transcript to be received? Mine was sent 10 days ago but my status for transcript is still "Not Yet Received"... Should I be worried yet? 🙁

A friend of mine told me I should have it mailed by like ups for quick shipping so I did that and attached the transcript matching form and it was received within like 2-3 days and then verified like the 4th day. Did you attach the transcript matching form with that? @whosehousedawgshouse

I sent my transcript January 10th and they received it by the 26th. I believe my school uses the USPS and they say it can take up to 15 business days. It was fortunate I did not need to have it resent because if I had it would have been cutting it close. My professor sent her LOR on the 22nd and both were received on the same day. On a side note, I did not send the matching form but it does not seem to have impacted me much since it was processed and received within a day.

I would call the SHPEP national office and check if they received it without it being updated on the website. I would also check up with your school's registrar office for more details on their policies on sending transcripts; how long it generally takes to send, if you can have it resent, and how long you have to wait to have it resent free of charge. Hopefully, you have an easier time of it than I have. You have plenty of time but I would call to get the ball rolling in the right direction. Good luck!

If you have any questions about the status of your application I suggest calling them. Just google "shpep contact" and it will tell you the hours etc of the office. I had called like 2 weeks ago and the person I talked to said my transcripts were in just my letter of rec wasn't(which I knew). The person who wrote my rec letter sent it in and that was verified but today when I finally certified and submitted my application it said my transcripts were NOT received which contradicts what I was told two weeks ago. So I just called them and the representative said he was looking into it and will call me back. So I suggest if you are unsure about the status of anything just call because that way you have a record that you tried to communicate something went wrong and that way they have to let you apply even if something goes wrong.

Thank you guys! My current institution's transcript was (finally) received and verified a few days ago. Best of luck to all of us! 🙂

Hey guys! Just wondering, I submitted my application yesterday (I know it's last minute, but I only found out about this great program not too long ago) but my transcripts were sent out last week. One of my transcripts was received, but my other one is still not received. They said that my recommendation letter was received but has not been attached to my file yet. So basically, they're only missing my one transcript.

It was sent out last week, so if in worst case my transcript gets processed next week, I would have still met the deadline, right? Do you think people who submitted their application close the the deadline and their materials processed later than deadline have low chance of getting accepted? 🙁

Hi there! I see that you have been accepted to the SHPEP program before! Congrats on that. I just wanted to ask, do you think my chances of getting in the dental program are good?
Heres my stats
3.6 GPA
Community College
Sophomore, completed 63 credits at the time of application to the SHPEP
1 recommendation from math teacher who knows my strengths
1 heartfelt personal statement
Adressing underserved populations and access to healthcare for all (based on my personal experience with healthcare-volunteering)
Do you think they’ll overlook the fact that I have over 60 credits by considering my personal statement?
Will I have a good chance?
I was waitlisted the last application cycle, and I mentioned that in my personal statement, of how my determination led me to apply again.

Thank you!
Sorry for the length of the message.

Applied to Alabama, Texas, and Nebraska! Hopefully I get into one as it seems like a great experience 🙂

Yeah a lot of people in this thread anyway. Maybe some weren't for Medical though but i'm guessing most are

When do you have to reply to the vanderbilt opp? If you can reply to them after two weeks i would wait. If not, weigh your options. Ik they say for some schools shpep give you an adv. in terms of getting oerhaps a med interview and exposure as well...but keep in mind people still get accepted to med schools without it. If you believe you’re going to want to apply to say a research oriented med school in the end, i’d say go for the research opp first. Then again this is assuming you’re a soph and not a freshman. In which case, take the research opportunity this year since you can apply next year again for shpep. 🙂 This is just my two cents worth!

Also, I would evaluate how much medical experience you currently have wirh what you could pursue through SHPEP. It IS an enrichment program meant to help you if you’re lacking in these areas 🙂.

Well I went ahead and accepted the research app because I won't know whether or not I got into sheep until March 15 so I wanted to have something to fall back on.I want clinical experience in the med school atmosphere but a research app at Vanderbilt can go a long way as well.

that's whats up. I'm doing medical. what location are yall trying to get at?

Ayyyy! Literally at a conference rn and just talked to the director of programs associated with sphsp! I told him I applied and he said they were currently going through apps rn!

Was it Dr. Fullilove?

I did medical for LSU, Rutgers, and Louisville. I know nothing about how competitive they are so please if anyone knows lmk
I'm sure it is very competitive. I know the ucla site had a couple thousand people apply with only 80 getting in. However I'm sure you'll get in! I did medical at washington, Florida, and UAB

I applied medical to washington, iowa state, louisville. I actually applied in time for early admission before I knew they changed things for this year and I’ve been going crazy ever since feb 15 hahaha! Can’t wait til next thursday! Does anyone know at what time we can expect to have an answer?

According to the thread from last year, decisions were posted at 12:00 AM EST on March 15. So if you're on the West Coast like me, I'd expect to have it posted at 9:00 PM?

I'll start off! Applied to Medical at Columbia, UCLA, and Iowa 🙁

- URM
- Economically disadvantaged
- First-gen
- Freshman (but with a junior standing due to a dual enrollment program in high school)
- Previous college's GPA: 3.66
- Current college's GPA: 3.50 (the transition's been tough lol)
- Research
- Hospital volunteer experience
- Some other extracurriculars/clubs
- Good personal statement
- Decent LOR

Also, just went back to last year's thread and it seems like some sites released their decision a few days before the actual deadline? Hopefully it's the case this year as well haha
