Official 2018 SHPEP thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Side note, what schools are you guys from? I’m interested to see how scattered the applicants are! I’m a sophomore at University of Puerto Rico

Hey guys, did you write more of a compelling heartfelt personal statement? Or an academic/ researchy type of personal statement? Mine was a heartfelt personal statement.
From what understand from SHPEP representatives, a heartfelt personal statement is strongly preferred over a research/academic based one!

I'm more of a creative writer so I kinda used the main events in my life that really drew me to healthcare to make my point, so yeah more creative/heartfelt.

I'm from a university in Erie, Pennsylvania. Really small haha. I don't think anyone else here applied.

I'm so excited to find out where I got into!! 3 more days :soexcited:

Questions:
- Who else applied to Howard?
- How early/late did you guys apply?
- @habitualgreatness I know that this may depend on which site you attend but do we have to dress professional everyday? Or is it only for special occasions/events that we are required to wear professional clothing?

I was considering applying to Howard but they said they wouldn't t be accepting anyone with over the credit limit🙁. I had all my application stuff in by Jan 15th so a little before the deadline. Where else did you apply?

🤔 Aww why is that? Do your credits qualify as a junior?

Also my 3 choices are

1. Howard
2. LSU
3. Florida

Do you know your friends' general stats? Sorry just really anxious for next week and curious
Oops somehow I accidentally skipped your comment so sorry for the late reply! Most of my friends were freshmen so only their fall quarter grades were submitted to SHPEP; though I don't really know too much about their stats... I'd assume that their GPA was good (?), but again, just a very vague assumption. And two of them were community college students. Sorry I wasn't able to provide any helpful info, but hey, the wait is almost over!

Wow congrats! I feel that I would go somewhere where I can be happier and get a full, well-rounded experience. Both programs are great, regardless. This is your summer vacation, after all, and as much as you want to enrich it with academics and whatnot, you should try to have some fun too and enjoy where you travel 🙂

I have a question for you...did you apply to Duke priority decision or regular?
I just missed the priority decision. I applied regular, but my application was still submitted well before the deadline.

Hey guys, Does it reallly matter when you apply? I applied the day before the deadline, but my transcrips and recommendation were recieved by them in December. I was thinking since everyone gets their decision at the same time this year, applying even a day before the deadline is fine.

At the end of the say I think it doesn't matter at all. There was no early decision this year so I think they just waited for all the applications to get to the national office and then shipped them out to the various sites on Feb 15th. I don't think they where making any decisions before that.

Thanks! Thats what I thought as well!

Also, I need someone's opinion. I just got into Duke's Biomedical summer institute program, which is duke's version shpep. If I get into UW SHPEP, I don't know which one to choose. I know Duke is more prestigious and may help me more in the long run, but I feel like UW will provide a better experience for the summer (hiking, mount rainer, big city, etc.) Someone give me incite.

@cvalrie78 Hey! I'm a newcomer to this thread! But if you're considering Duke for Medical School, I would do their program. Some friends of mine did this last summer and all participants were guaranteed an interview for medical school upon applying (so I'm pretty sure they are going to continue with that).

Does anyone know if decisions come out at 12 am on Thursday or later on that day? (I hope its as soon as possible at 12am! :soexcited:)

Heyy! What 3 sites did you apply to?

12 AM from what I hear. I'm definitely staying up all night to open my results lol.

I am torn between staying up and just going to bed. Realistically, I will probably be up.😴

For those interested:
I am a freshman applying to
Columbia
UCLA
University of Florida

I attend a school in upstate NY.

Hey guys, I've been watching the forum for a bit and finally decided to make an account. I'm so nervous!!!! It's so close!!! 😱

I applied to:
1) Columbia
2) UCLA
3) Rutgers

I applied to the same sites as you!

So if we are accepted, do we have until the 19th to confirm our place?

No, I we only have two days to accept. (#6 on the picture I posted below). So until the 17th.

I'll legit be up studying for my orgo II and Genetics Exam Next Week anyway XD. My break will literally be checking the results for SHPEP.

I have the same exact exams next week!! will also be staying up to check if I got accepted or not. I don’t think I’ll be able to go to sleep without knowing 🙁

Just curious, what are other summer programs that y'all applied to?

Btw I go to the University of Washington and applied to Columbia, UCLA, and University of Iowa!

I didn’t apply to any other summer program because the ones I found mainly focused around research :/ I really didn’t find many that were medical, geared toward freshmen-sophomore and not super pricey. If I don’t get accepted I’m planning on taking a class during the summer and shadowing

@whosehousedawgshouse I didn't really apply to any other programs which was stupid of me, but I did apply for a summer volunteering gig at my local hospital so at least I'll be doing something.

It says two business days so I think we will, in fact, have until the 19th to confirm. I am guessing most will confirm as soon as we are able to; I know I will be.🙂

Ok yeah that's what I thought. At least I can go home and tell my parents about it in person over the weekend if I get accepted!

This might be a stupid question but does anyone know if there’s a certain amount of dental/med/nursing that they accept? Like for ex: 30 med, 30 dental, 20 nursing... something like that?
Or is it 80 medical/80 dental?

I was asking this exact question earlier. The only thing I know is that, based on the wording on the SHPEP website, each site accepts roughly 80 people total so it cannot be 80 medical/80 dental. The breakdown of that 80 is what I am unsure of.

On a side note, is anyone applying to the other programs offered (public health, veterinary, nursing, etc.)?

@GoldenAfricana yayy :highfive:
it is. although im unsure of the exact amounts but im sure it varies by program being that theres
  • Dental
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Optometry
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Physician Assistant
  • Public Health
and not every site offers every single one of these.

I applied to nursing! I was super curious about the breakdown too. I wonder if they have less room for students in the fields that aren't medical or dental, but I seriously hope not. Then again, I feel like fewer people apply to the other fields so probably

I plan to do the same. If I don't get in ill be taking classes shadowing and volunteering but I hope that's not the case. Praying and thinking positive thoughts
