Not wanting to scare people, I know multiple US MDs with 10+ interviews who did not match. This is rare and there were extenuating circumstances, but remember nothing is guaranteed. This is a competitive game, I wouldn't cancel an interview unless 1. You would rather not be a gastroenterologist than train at that program or 2. You physically cannot attend the interview dates that are available or 3. You personal/family life will not allow you to train at that program. No amount of an interviews will make you super-calm on match day, just apply broadly, interview/rank as much as feasibly possible and hope for the best. With that being said, Most people with 8 or more should feel pretty good.

Extenuating circumstances ? Bad interpersonal skills ?

Interestingly as per NRMP charting outcomes there are hardly any US-MDs not matching >10...However there is considerable mortality even for IMGs >15... It seems there is a considerable bias against ranking them ...because if an img got >15 invites means that the cv had to be stellar...else 15 invites would be non sequitur...

Thank you for putting the link

Who is all applying to the pilot program (combined GI and transplant hep)
Any IV yet ?

I have a Yale interview on October 11th. Does anyone have any other day and want to switch? I would be really appreciative! Thanks.

Mostly, yes. That and doing things like burning bridges at your home program, which is after all, your best shot at matching, and a good way to get bad rec letters. It’s very rare though as you pointed out.

Have a BU interview on 10/3 and need to make a swap. Would be really appreciative to make a trade. Thanks for considering!

how is this done? to my understanding the pilot programs are applied to when you are already a GI fellow thus thinking about this pre-getting fellowship is not an option

Some programs if you do the research offer the pilot program. So they rank or interview based on the applicant. For instance this year meeting liver meeting in Boston is a great way for potential applicants to meet with the PDs or Chiefs of these programs.

But you may be correct since you will do up to PGY-5 in gastro and PGY-6 has a total different variation and curriculum based on transplant hepatology.

These programs are all at liver transplant centers.

I was just asking to see how many are going with this stream.

Around when should we start reaching out to programs if we see them on this list and we haven’t heard from them yet? Also who do we talk to, the program coordinator or just email direct to the PD?

Good question. Let's see what experienced people say about it.

Good question. Let's see what experienced people say about it.

That's an excellent question. I think a fair time to contact programs that you haven't heard from is around mid/late August (that's when I did it). I am a big proponent of this, I believe it personalizes your application and exhibits genuine interest in the program (so long as your email is personal, and not generic). Programs get so many applications, I think programs like people showing genuine interest, and makes the decision a bit more personal. This tactic actually got me at least 2 more interviews, and I actually matched at one of these places! It is a low-risk/high-reward move in my opinion, because the worst case scenarios are 1. No Response 2. We aren't giving out more interviews or 3. We haven't given out interviews yet. This tactic will only work, however, if you haven't been screened out for other reasons. But at the end of the day, its worth a try because I don't really see how it could hurt

Vast majority of PDs hate or at least are annoyed by the flood of emails and telephone messages they get. Will they count it against you? No. But they will complain endlessly to others if you ask them about it. However, every so often you will find someone who is in a good mood and happens to open one of hundreds of these emails and will take a closer look at your app. I blame them for not openly sending rejections. The thing that becomes the most sketchy and frowned upon is sending multiple programs “I’ll rank you #1” type of emails closer to the end of the season.

anyone getting invites at Chicago ? I got neither invite nor rejection

based off of past years/experience, what % of programs do people think have sent out invites already? like 70%, 50%, etc?

I think most PDs know what they're getting into when they sign up to be PD and that includes getting hundreds of emails around recruiting season. I agree that most emails will go unnoticed but small chance it will help.

There are a lot of programs that have sent out IVs not on this list.

Has anyone heard from UC Davis, UCSF, UCI or UCSD?

Delayed Maryland - 2nd wave- and UC Davis (sweet username 😉 )

lurkers 95%, contributors 5%. Do not trust this list alone. Going by previous years, ~50% have given IVs by now. If you have about 5 IVs by now, you are in a good position
Agreed. If you have 0 by now you should start to slowly worry/consider options but at least half the programs have not sent IVs now. Remember it only takes 1!
