Official 2019-2020 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am still sitting at zero. Kind of freaking out. Approximately 15-20% of the programs should have sent out interviews by now. Is this a bad sign?

the invites so far are "reflex" invites... ie invites sent to in house candidates + candidates of programs they are used to invite from (eg from the same region) + candidates whose mentors the programs knows...most of these programs will have a second round...

That is an interesting take on the situation and certainly would make sense. Thank you for the input.

Thanks. I just added 60 more. Is it too late to add programs at this point????

I wouldn’t think so. Some programs are now only starting to look at applications so I think you’d be okay

Very well put.

Many people will cancel and many programs will send invites as I said before in my posts (before end of Aug or after first Monday of Sept).
Some even send invites in Oct going for the second round.

Many programs are still in the phase of getting their newly fellows oriented and have not even started the invite process.

Most invites as of now have been exactly the same as last years (plus or minus a couple being late or early).

Many PA, NY, NJ, DC, VA, most of Cali and many other known programs in Chicago/IL will come soon.

Have not heard yet. Just as an aside, if you are the slightest bit interested in a career in academics (thus needed time for publications in fellowship, and mentorship by high powered individuals) I would avoid Tufts in Boston, similar to GW. "Academic" affiliation/name, but just focused on scoping and the bottom dollar $$$ and not teaching, research, fellow education. Lots of scutwork. Both are overshadowed anyways by the other better programs in their respective cities.

hrmm i wonder if ppl aren't reposting if an interview has already been listed. would be interesting to see how far programs are giving second round interviews and/or staggered interviews

You are/will be getting screened out many places with step filters. Be aggressive in having your home faculty send emails/make calls to programs on your behalf throughout your region and then do so yourself, this will get your bulk of interviews, once you get through interview doors, you could be even ahead of others with better steps if your research and letters legit being from good program and US AMG
How common is asking your home faculty to call places for your interviews? I did not know that this is an option. If so, what is the timing of this and how should one approach this? Appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

If your home faculty is known:
Like the head (member status) or capo (fellow) of one of the 5 families (AGA, ASGE, ACG, AASLD, ANMS) they have a lot of reach since they all know each other in the academic arena.

They should of called when the season started, or emailed their friends.
This is common when a program has 2 or 3 slots and they want to make sure the 4th or 5th person gets matched also, or they know the applicant they sending to their friends will initiate a strong connection or will bring paramount level of care for the patients.

PS: I know some will say is only 4 families why include ANMS they just a glorified crew. I say no, if you coming from one of the ANMS programs those people have power.

You got to take the fact that many just lurk and only 10-15% post.

Georgetown rules over GW. GW is a lot of scutwork for sure. I am not sure about Tufts

Meaning if one wants to go this route their faculty should have already called by now? Two of my mentors are pretty well known in the area being from very highly ranked university. I feel a bit odd asking them to do this. One offered to call AFTER all interviews are over to vouch for me. I also just got one interview at a well known local university so I don't know whether I should do this.

Take the offer and make sure he gives his highest recommendation for you to match.

still at 0 and seeing lots of programs I had applied to on the list. Is it time to get my mentors to start making calls or should I wait a week or two to see how interview invites shake out?

Add more programs and don’t panic. Many of the listed programs are pretty high tier.

No rejections no ivs,,, complete silence,,, not a bad omen, hopefully, although it's stepping up the stress level...

Just sit tight. Most people are in the same boat. You could ask your LOR writers to give some calls if they know other programs well.

Point noted though I am curious how much would it actually help. I am afraid that courtesy IVs are falsely reassuring and waste time and money.

The truth is ppl are fighting for only half the available positions(other half reserved for internal candidates in pretty much every program, unless that internal candidate has stellar CV and can easily match outside). Ppl with no In house fellowship spots in their home residency are the ones on the rough boat. Courtesy IVs ll be common if mentor calls but at least if you come across as an impressive personality, they ll rank you high.

50% if is a 2 spot , but for 3 spot positions two will go for internal applicants 2/3.

So in reality the completion is for approx~ 35% of the available positions.

trust in your applications. If you have been a good resident with a good reputation in your home program and has done research you will likely get interviews. (talking about USMD as I do not know anything about people requiring VISAs and the extra hoops they need to go through), It is still too early in the process imo to panic. We see the same theme year to year and there are always people whose post causes panic.

Tell me your scores, residency program type (community-university), visa status, number of programs you applied to, how many different fields you applied to (??), research and I will play statistic with you.

Also please do not post pics, you can always just put the link.

You have gotten rejections from some major programs that give IMGs with strong application interviews (we need to also factor this into the statistic).

Unfortunately requiring a Visa is a minus, the only way a IMG requiring a visa matches these days is with extensive research and they tend to match to pretty strong programs.

USMD coming from strong residency programs always match, never seen anyone not match (unless they do not know how to interview)
