Moot point since everything is in now but:

US citizen, US good clinical but poor research medical school
Step I 242
Step 2 CK 246 CS x1
Step 3 221
Second tier academic program with strong GI liver xplant
2 GI research, 1 GI clinical letters + PD letter
1 abstract submitted to AASLD; Writing 2 papers first author; 3 remote (prior to med school, basic science) papers not first author [did bench work]

Unfortunately, not all of my documents are uploaded due to my stupidity. MSPE, transcript and photo were last and went up today but will need processing. Applied broadly (34 programs) but mostly to second tier academic centers close to/in major cities. Also some community programs in those areas too.

Would it be not worth it to add a couple of programs I've thought of since sending my app at this point? I don't know how much they penalize people who are not sending apps exactly on the first day.

Chances?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Your scores will get you some interviews.

Thoughts about reaching out to programs to express interest (i.e., beg for an interview)? Sounds a bit desperate, I know...

Please update the IV invite sheet and copy paste it when you get an interview. (Please)

It may or may not matter depending upon the minds of program officials; if they don't mind it doesn't matter and may bump your application up but keep in mind it's full potential of back firing.

It does not matter at all. Even if they give you an interview this way you will end up being ranked lower. By this time programs already have divided applicants or filtered them in groups. Once they send the invites for the first group the ones who cancel will bump up other ones.

But to answer your question, it will not make any difference. If you are a strong applicant you will get an interview.

Good for you for applying to this many.
You will get filtered bt many due to your scores, not being AMG and your program of study.
But do not lose hope you will get 3 IVs, but maybe more if you have some strong connections from your MD Anderson research experience (they can make some calls to their friends).

Are you in astronomy business or have some magic formula?

He/she applied to 120+ and there some community programs I know that grant interviews based on the fact that stronger candidates don’t rank them high so they want to fill.

Has one applicant gotten these many ivs or its number for all amgs combined so far? Would be help to clarify as it would get more confusing as ivs add up.

I don't know if someone has received all of these or not. It's suppose to help people know when that specific program sent out their interview invites and the list will continue to grow. I've received interviews from the programs I added to the list.

I haven't gotten any but one of these. Typically posters just add on and bold the one they're adding to the overall list.

gahh I feel like I'm applying to med school all over again always checking my email. I feel like I'm a fairly strong applicant but no invites yet. Anyone else?

It is such a nice feeling. That why I come back each season to be part of this group. To re-live the last match year after year along side y’all

To lurkers out there: don’t use SDN early on to compare yourself to the people posting if you want to avoid unnecessary anxiety. Interviews will come but it might not be until much later and it might not be to the places you expected.

Yes only 2 of my IV was at places I was expecting. The other ones came from places I thought it was a long reach.

Don’t just lurke, come on in and join the discussion

Thank you for these nice words. I’m a recovering long time lurker and now that the application season has come around I feel myself slipping back into my lurking ways. Appreciate the good words!

Do most programs send all invites at once or do they send them out staggered throughout the season?

Had a question on how much geography plays in GI interviews. From visiting various program sites it appears many programs take fellows from the same geographic area. Is this because programs prefer to interview applicants from that area? For example, does a mid-tier west coast program prefer to interview mid-tier applicants that have a west coast connection (perm address, undergrad, med school, residency) vs. interviewing a mid-tier or higher applicant from elsewhere? Or is it that programs interview candidates from all over but programs and applicants end up ranking largely based on geography?

Competition is fierce. I know someone in a program who told me that they have received 450 applications for their 3 pots.

The program wants to be sure that 1. They fill every spot and 2. You’d be a good match. In that order.

If it’s a regional program then they are worried that you will not rank them high if you clearly have no ties. They will likely ask you in the interview why you want to be in that region to see if there’s more to it then you are just applying everywhere. Or if you are overqualified or looking for something more research oriented then you might not come if they are more of a regional program (usually less research oriented). They don’t want to be your “backup”.
