Official 2019-2020 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How much does having a tech to set up the travel cart on call matter to folks?

I push the cart and make sure the tech sets it up and created list of items for them for advanced and regular procedures.

It matters a lot but you have to push the cart sometimes. Is fellowship is not a real job.

Lots of programs and hospitals are gonna have the fellow do this. Pretty much most VA hospitals. retrospectively, weekend and night scopes happen only in true emergencies and those things ll help in the future job when one has to troubleshoot if its a new endo tech.

For those who already interviewed at WCM, what time the interviews typically conclude. thanks

I also wanna know..interviewing at some of these....

It’s very hard to compare programs objectively but there are few things that you can consider....

I would favor:
- Bigger program (>30 faculty, 4 or more fellows per year) as this would reflect more resources, more mentor options, better networking.

- presence of T32 track even if you are not applying to it, as only programs with strong faculty and research experience can sustain this NIH funding

- Variety of clinical settings: training is more well rounded in a program that has private + VA + county hospital rather than private practice only (Mayo, Cleveland clinic). The diseases, patient background, scope experience varies a lot, this variety will enrich your clinical and scoping training and you’ll be ready to work wherever.

Hope this helps.

We call it scut work and I do not think it’s a positive. Sure, it’s helpful to know how to tech but after doing it a few times it’s not helpful.

By the end of fellowship you can train techs and honestly they should give us a little diploma too. (Best tech support while completing gastroenterology and hepaltoogy fellowship)

Info on wayne state?
I have heard from fellows over there in both GI and other departments that GI department is the worst, even other specialties prefer to consult Gen Surg for scopes not GI, and the program overall is malignant

I don think setting up the cart is a big deal, it takes an extra 5-10min. I think the bigger question is do you have to clean the scope after you use it. This was a question I never knew to ask during interviews so I don’t know if it’s even a thing but I would consider needing to clean the scopes for after hours cases to be a deal breaker.

pre wash after scopes in VA was a thing i heard many ppl say

So we're getting down to the nitty gritty. I imagine marginal activity from here on out. At this point, was is a comfortable number of interviews to have?

Anyone willing to swap their SLU interview date? Mine is on 27th September. PM me if willing....

That is Cards not GI
I heard usc is on probation is this true?
Please site a reference because I ca not find anything on ACGME site on this.

“The ACGME also took the rare step of imposing immediate probation on the fellowship’s sponsoring institutions, USC and the L.A. County-USC Medical Center, concluding they “failed to demonstrate substantial compliance” with unspecified requirements.”

I believe USC cards was shut down but the sponsoring institutions (I assume it means and all it’s other residency/fellowship programs) are on probation.

What dates are Henry ford interviewing? I got 27th September but was hoping to swap with someone! Seems like 27th is the most popular date with all GI PDs 🙁

does anyone know if UT Houston has more than one interview date? If yes is anyone interested in switching for a 10/4 interview? I have conflicting interviews.

they don't offer more dates..

When you have been up for 24 hrs and its 3 AM and you just had the banding or bolus from hell, I assure you, you don't want to take another half hour washing your scope and drop it off at sterile processing while dealing with an endoscopic zamboni machine moving a 2mph accross hospital campus

Has anyone actually received an interview confirmation after replying to the initial invite or been able to get in touch with the program coordinator??

Any chance someone can swap their 10/05 UNLV date with my 9/28 date?

Any insights on USF (looks like a fairly robust/diverse training experience online)? Or Florida programs in general relative to each other? @ShiShiMD you seem to know every program!?

Would 5 interviews be a safe number?
Just extremely concerned about not matching
How many did you apply to? If you only have 3 bit applied to 10 there’s a different risk of not matching than if you applied to 100 and only got 3.

How do people feel about:

Cincinnati
Vermont
UT Houston

Any insight would be great thanks!

anyone heard from SUNY Brooklyn or U Mississippi?

Heard from Mississippi a couple of weeks ago. Was forced to decline the interview as they only offered 9/27 and 10/4..

Why does every program want to interview on 9/27 ?

USF very strong. Lots of procedures and you will see and learn all you have to in order to be a competent and compassionate gastroenterologist. Liver disease and IBD might be an issue since some months they don’t have clinics set up right. So ask about IBD and Liver exposure.

In general the best is UofF Jacksonville. Then Mayo (Florida) the rest are all even.

But make sure to ask about he advance procedure exposure also if this is something you should be able to at least observe and if you can get certified in by the program/ fellowship director if they allow it or have enough cases for you to perform.

Vemont great little program. Just make sure if they offering 1 or 2 spot. Since 1 spot always goes to internal.

U
Applied to like 45
Not the best cycle but I’m still hopeful

I think first wave interviews of 10-15% of the places that you applied to is reasonable for an applicant. So you are missing 1-2 programs but it’s not unreasonable. One more invite should ease any fears but if it doesn’t come I think 8% is well within the margin of error.

So UF Jacksonville is better than UF Gainesvillle?

I got... The dates are coinciding with other interviews so will likely decline...

If anyone is thinking about declining, especially with obviously coinciding dates, please do so as soon as possible. Many of us are still hanging nervously on very few invites. You may be helping a lot with an early decline. Thank you.

I have usually declined early... But for family reasons I don't want to miss out on DC/Baltimore area programs ...

can anyone comment on NYP-Queens vs NYP-Brooklyn? Do they mostly keep internal candidates? Haven't been able to find much online
