USMLE Official 2020 Step 1 Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Closed through May 31st. However, they say limited testing will be available to "essential workforce" programs defined by CISA which healthcare falls under so not sure what they will do with USMLE/COMLEX.
Hopefully the NBME will put out a statement about this in their weekly USMLE updates. Kinda ridiculous that all these other boards have come out and said something and we're sitting in the dark.

It is ridiculous. I would also think it'd be more difficult to reschedule masses of USMLE/COMLEX exams since they're so long so they'd want to keep as many of those dates as possible. If this continues into June, they need to look into letting schools proctor the exams.

Their latest updates says no because that would disrupt the integrity of the exam lol. I think the bigger issue here is the mental health problems this is going to cause...I was speaking with someone who was scheduled in March who had theirs cancelled on the day, then had their rescheduled exam cancelled. They said they can't handle it and are very burned out/depressed. I heard the argument that Step 1/2 might not be considered essential exams since they are not the final exams to licensure like that PT exam is, but I think NBME (and NBOME) can definitely make the argument that these are likely the most high-stakes exams Prometric offers and should be considered essential based on that alone. The question is whether NBME even cares enough about us to make that argument.

I just can't imagine how midlevel boards would be considered more essential than physician boards. I get that we aren't licensed after Step 1/Level 1 but it is one of four exams we have to take and pass to be legally allowed to practice medicine. Not to mention creating a huge back log of examinees that they may not be able to test in time to fulfill graduation requirements and then what? Hospitals can't go a year without interns.

I'm fully in agreement with you, that's just an argument I heard some people making. Again, it would be nice if we didn't have to keep speculating and making these arguments in the first place...I get that NBME/NBOME are at the mercy of Prometric, but so are all these other boards and they've managed to put out statements.

Not to mention, their weekly update literally came out yesterday and there's no mention of this. So, now we have to wait another week? Ridiculous.

Also, whoever is handling things at Prometric is doing a terrible job. How do you put out a statement like that without listing who is considered essential.

I was just about to post this lol. Have to assume that means USMLE is as well. However they are still reducing capacity at testing sites so some unfortunate souls will still have their dates canceled. Praying it's not any of us!
Yeah, for once regretting living in a more populated area and wishing I was scheduled in Montana or something lol

Hopefully it won’t be too bad since they’re extending hours and opening up Sunday testing and all that.

It looks like the cancellation of non-essential exams will allow those who were cancelled (for Level/Step) to reschedule into those non-essential exam spots in May too, which is nice.

Taking NBME 16 tomorrow at 5 weeks (hopefully) out. Just finished up what should also be my last ever day of 1000+ reviews, not gonna miss smashing the spacebar all morning every morning
I am between taking 15 or 16 as baseline this weekend. Good luck! Let me know what you think of 16.

Alright y'all, to keep the saga going.....apparently the CPA exam has been deemed an essential exam as well. So...doesn't seem like this well help us out much if Prometric is going to call every exam essential lol

I'm just expecting Prometric to handle all of this in the dumbest way possible at this point. And I question how strongly the NBME and NBOME are advocating for us behind the scenes.

I felt good after the essential exams thing but now my faith has kinda gone out the window. Not to say that we're superior to CPAs, but if their exam is essential it just seems like Prometric made any licensing exam essential and maybe just things like the MCAT/SAT/etc got pushed. So I'm thinking it'll just end up being a random 50% get booted out...hopefully they don't keep us waiting till a week before our dates to find out.

Yeah I don't trust them at all to prioritize medical students. And I agree that we aren't superior to other fields but I would think we are considered more essential in the current climate. I just don't think I can handle my exam getting pushed back indefinitely and I don't trust my school to be flexible at all about it. It all just sucks and I hope decisions are made quickly. My friend was set to take Step at the end of May and she got canceled yesterday as did most of her class because their Prometric shut down and she now has to drive several hours away to another state to take the exam 2 weeks later than she was supposed to.

I feel the same way, the uncertainty is what's killing me. I looked yesterday for dates either near home or by my school and could only find something a month after I'm scheduled now. I'm worried that by the time Prometric lets us know we're cancelled (seems like they have a habit for waiting till the week before), the backlog will be months. I don't know how we're supposed to continue studying for Step 1 once we start clerkships and are supposed to start shelf/Step 2 studying. That's why I think our exams should be prioritized: a CPA can take their exams at any point and the amount of prep is not nearly the same. They can take the exams infinite times until they pass.

Now I'm actually getting mad at the CPA since you pointed that out lol. Like I'm sorry their exam is not as essential as ours are right now. And I would love for the NBME/NBOME to go hard pointing out the difficulties and rigidness of our timeline to them and that's why we should be prioritized but they won't. And that just makes me even angrier.

Yup. And technically you don't even need to be licensed to work, I mean you can't work as a CPA but you can get a job just based on having the Master's in Accounting. I know a couple of people who just couldn't pass the exam and they still have a job.

Also, saw on Reddit that some people started getting cancelation emails for June? Wish there was a day they'd tell us "if you haven't gotten an email, you're good". Also, it was someone registered for Step 1 and Level 1 and they didn't tell them which exam it was that was canceled.

Yep I saw that same post. Apparently this person is located in the midwest which is conveniently where I'm located as well so I'm slightly panicking. None of my classmates have had exams canceled (yet) and most if not all of us have June dates in the same state. Prometric really could not be handling this any worse and the NBME/NBOME are just standing by and letting them figure it out.

Yeah kind of insane. They should figure out all the cancelations and then announce a day that they're going to release them. Like, say May 1st, just release all canceled exams for May and June. This is seriously the worst way they could go about doing this, keeping us all on edge.

I know I hope they also send an email saying you're not cancelled too.

I don't expect them to have all the details figured out but they should not be winging something like this and keeping us all in the dark. At least have some deadlines like if you're testing in May and you haven't heard from us by May 1st, you're good to go. If you're testing in June and you haven't heard from us by May 15th, you're good to go. Just something concrete would alleviate so much stress.

And it seems like most schools are not doing anything to help us out with all this. We were told we "wouldn't be penalized" and "they would be flexible" if our date got canceled but what does that even mean? It's not really fair if half the class has a nice quiet dedicated to study for and take boards while the other half is scrambling to study while in the middle of rotations.

Them being flexible just means they'll extend the requirement to have it done, I can't imagine them being any more accommodating, especially for Step. They'll just say we don't need to take Step anyways. My school just made it sound like they wouldn't require us to have Level 1 done by end of July like it is currently. I definitely can't imagine my school giving me time off to do a pseudo-dedicated part 2.

Oh there's absolutely no way that they'll give us time off in third year to study if we have to take it then. Like you said, it'll likely be oh just take it by December or some nonsense like that. That's why I'm crossing my fingers that if one of my exams has to be canceled, I hope it's COMLEX because at least then the school has to make sure we have time to take that exam and may be more accommodating. If Step gets canceled, we're screwed because DO schools have no obligation to make sure we can sit for Step.

If step gets cancelled and COMLEX doesn’t, I’m going to do everything within my power to make sure I reschedule the COMLEX and take the step in its place.

If my Step gets cancelled and not my COMLEX, I would see if I could honestly just swap them. I know odds are low but I really don't want to sit for COMLEX before Step considering I don't plan on doing any COMLEX specific studying. My COMLEX is in July so maybe things will be different but I doubt it because it seems like they will still be social distancing into the foreseeable future. It actually may be worse if they decide to re-open to all exams because we'll have a higher chance of getting axed if they stick to the random 50%.

I did a set of ComBank questions the other day, 50 I think. I missed 8 and 7 of them were OPP.

I hadn't thought of this and now I will likely do this as well. I don't care what my school says, I need a Step score for the specialty I want to pursue.

Prometric closed till may 31st. F@ck i was supposed to take exam on may 5, now couldn't find a date before Aug 2. and i just signed up.

Read the other posts in here that's for non essential exams which we are not considered.(we are essential). We dont know of this will overrule the stay at home order though

I got an email saying don't go to ur test center.

What state are you in if you don't mind my asking? They ruled USMLE and COMLEX as essential exams and can begin testing again on May 1st but are still reducing each testing site to 50% capacity through May and June so examinees are randomly getting bumped off their scheduled date if that location is over capacity.

Test center is in Fair oaks, Sacramento, California. A lot of cases here for sure.

Do u know anyone else who got Bumped as well?

F***, I'm sorry.
250 on NBME 16 today. Definitely happy with that for a first NBME. Very few content questions, like maybe 1 or 2, that I just didn't know. The rest was applying stuff I knew in unfamiliar ways. Zanki is 100% all the content you need
*bows before you*

Commenting to stay subscribed to cancellation updates.

Don't let youself feel too good based on the old test forms. I found them to be an absolute joke, like >90% correct on NBME18. The new forms with numbers 20+ are an entirely different animal.

I'm in the midwest and no one I know has gotten bumped yet. However I heard they're expecting more cancellations next week so I would bet some of us get bumped then.
My guess is that each Prometric site has been made responsible for measuring out a new floor plan to maximize test-takers, and then randomly cancel however many necessary. They're probably giving the sites a week to send in this information and so your email timing will vary based on your test center. They're all different sizes and layouts, so it makes sense why they couldn't give us blanket dates or send all emails at once.

Do you think they will do all of May and June together, or keep us June people waiting? I saw some cancelations of June dates so I assume all together?

Yeah there's clearly been some activity in June test dates both on Reddit and SDN so far. I'm guessing all the sites have been told to figure out a new setup by May 1st that will be what they use throughout May and June, probably even past that.

I did see in one thread on Reddit that someone said they called their local Prometric and were told that the cancellation decisions are being made at the national level and not by each individual centers. I would guess that each center has to report their capacity or something like that and then the random cancellations are being made at the national headquarters. But who really knows, which definitely seems to be the mantra for all this.

Good point, probably don't want to deal with the local Prometric staff getting slipped $1,000 to "randomly" not cancel you. Random cancels assigned at the national office after hearing each site's max capacity is probably what's happening behind the scenes.

Hmm. So I'm wondering if it's better to be at a bigger center or smaller center at this point. Probably doesn't make a difference since it's 50% capacity regardless, but maybe bigger places could space out computers more? I'm taking mine at the same site I took my MCAT and from what I recall, it wasn't that big and there weren't that many people testing.

Wonder if you can offer up your spot for a later date. I wouldn't mind a late June or early July date but wouldn't want a August one.
