USMLE Official 2020 Step 1 Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I took 102 back in March which is apparently one of the easier ones? I know that about half my class had difficulty passing that one on the first attempt though so who really knows. How is it possible that I’m more anxious about freaking COMLEX than Step? I don’t think I failed but I honestly can’t say one way or another where I felt pretty confident I at least passed Step. I definitely flagged more on COMLEX than Step because they kept hitting on things that were not my strong points. It doesn’t help that I made other dumb mistakes like mixing up the antidotes for heparin and direct thrombin inhibitor overdoses and forgot what acyclovir does in the last block. Ugh.
I'm sure you did fine! I've literally never heard of anyone walking out of COMLEX feeling good. At least you don't have to wait over a month lol. I also feel like I'm going to feel more anxious waiting for my COMLEX score vs Step especially since it's such a long wait and the test is just such crap. #DOdifference

Spent the morning doing true learn blocks of 50. Getting high 70s and mid 80s on them. (wish I could pull that off in Uworld lol). Have about 5-10 topics I want to cover today along with a micro and pharm review, though if the micro on true learn is similar to Comlex it wont be an issue at all.

got 140ish omm questions to do between today and tmr. feeling alright. The empirical evidence says I will pass. I would like to break at least 500 but really my overall goal is to not fail so I can at least match and pay off my debts after a FM residency at the bottom of the ocean.

Comsae D was 481, Combank assessment was 602-622 back in May.

I just don’t want this dumb test to ruin my life especially after getting a good Step score. I should find out next week but it’s ridiculous that other people have to wait so long. There is no reason it should take more than 2-3 weeks to grade this exam. My hate for COMLEX keeps growing exponentially by the day lol.

Yeah I feel it. I'm oscillating between completely not giving an eff since I did decent on 105b and being terrified that I somehow fail this. And I agree, the rollout for scoring makes absolutely no sense. Why does someone who tested on the last day of their "window" get their score the same day as someone who tested 5 weeks earlier at the beginning? Makes no sense, gonna be a serious hit on my mental health over the month lol. Definitely would've picked a different date had I known.

I'm sure you'll do great! I feel like 500+ on any of the new COMSAEs should be enough to feel good about passing but my neurotic self won't ever let me feel comfortable about anything. I was in the deepest state of IDGAF during COMLEX as well and was mentally spent by the end of it (it's a long ass test) so that probably didn't help matters lol.

Pretty much exactly same lol

I dont take step for another 2 weeks but I am excited/terrified that the turnaround is so fast. if only comlex could get it together and not make me wait 5-6 weeks
Right?! The waiting in between is dreadful because you just keep convincing yourself it's gone so wrong lol. My comlex scores won't be released for another 2-3 weeks and I tested 6/22. It's not as bad as others, but everything around comlex makes zero sense.

I said this on my schools group me though, there is one good thing about comlex, it stops me from having to take a licence exam that is PURE OMM.

Yeah, I see people posting about that Philadelphia OMM test like it’s a good thing (the idea that you could take just the steps and then just one OMM exam), but honestly, I’d rather take the full comlex than just an OMM exam. I feel like there is a much higher risk of failure on the pure OMM test, at least for me.

Would be nice to save the money and time on all the extra tests, though. I can see the appeal.

I made my own counterstrain deck and that’s the only OMM I intend to keep up with. Since we’re not allowed to do HVLA or anything on the PE, if I keep up with my counterstrain, that’s all I need to know for the PE and I feel like I can pass all the other levels of comlex based on all the other medical stuff I know without any OMM knowledge.

Counter strain is so gross. Im basically not touching it for level 1. I'm going to roll the dice that VS and Chapman is the way to go. I just dont have the time or energy to learn all the different parts right now

243 on NBME 24. Still have to take UWSA2 and Free 120. Two weeks left. Is it still worth taking NBME 18?

I agree that counterstrain is gross... there were only a couple of counterstrain points on level 1 so it’s definitely not something I’d worry about for level 1 if you don’t know it well already.

It’s just the absolute easiest thing to do for the PE IMO - the SP is going to be told while spot is supposed to hurt the worst, so you can get the correct diagnosis, perform the correct treatment, and get points for the right diagnosis in your SOAP note off of one piece of information, more or less. It was just me being extra and doing advanced planning to choose to make that deck this early. It definitely helped with the OMM comat because there were like 8-9 counterstrain points on that for me LOL

What did everyone wear for masks? How much did you practice in them?
I wore a cloth (homemade, not one of those super thick ones) surgical style mask with ties. I loosened the bottom tie and didn’t tighten it around my nose (it had a metal strip like surgical masks do to shape to my nose) to get a bit of airflow. I took UW2 and the free 120 in the mask.

I was worried about the mask but honestly I didn’t really notice it on the day. My testing center was nice and cool and I was dressed a little bit more lightly than I might have otherwise to compensate for the mask. My only tip would be to make sure you don’t eat/drink anything that makes your breath super stinky and brush your teeth really well so you don’t have to breathe in your own coffee breath all day.

Ok question for you fam-This sunday I will be 3 weeks out so should I take NBME 18 that day and then the following weekend (2 weeks out) take UWSA2? Or other way around? I am very hesitant to take a practice exam the week of my exam as I think it could mess with my head and ruin my confidence if it doesn't go as expected for some reason. I will probably only take free 120 the week of and that really won't bother me since its not really predictive at all

Also is 18 more straightforward than UWSAs? It has to be with that crazy ass curve it has. Ive heard the questions are more straight forward but wanted to know yall's opinion on it. I thought UWSA1 was actually pretty challenging (fair but challenging) but the curve is nice. Like 81% on UWSA1 is a 258 but on NBME 18 its like a 230 so I am guessing the questions on 18 are more first/second order you know it or you don't type questions? Reason I am asking is because I've been averaging around low 80s on pretty much everything the past month (UWSA, Amboss and UWorld) and the thought of getting ~80% on 18 sounds rough which would be like a 230 and 20 points off from my goal 🙁

I've done a few blocks in them. Def recommend a surgical mask, and then wear it upside down. This allows the "pinched part " to draw in fresh air much more easily that if you wore it correctly
I might bring one for backup. My only thing is people are worried about the ear thing, but it doesn't bother me for some reason. I have a cloth mask that I cut the bottom piece to allow more airflow.

It doesn’t bother me if it fits. But I have a big head so some masks actively pull on my ears forward, until it inevitably breaks. So far I have found masks that fit but are otherwise itchy/uncomfortable/can’t breath, or comfortable masks that don’t fit. Can’t seem to find one that is both comfortable and fits. Speaking of, I better bring some backups.

Personally, I would do 18 two weeks out and UWSA2 ~1 week out. I get being nervous to see a low score, but I would really take UWSA2 as close as possible since it's still the best predictor we have. Just try not to put too much stock into it if you're slightly below your score, especially if biochem/cell bio is your weak spot. Taking it a week out gives you enough time to not freak out right before imo.

If you know the curve is rough, focus on the % correct and not the 3 digit score. You know in the real world, an 80% is never going to be a 230, so why worry if it is on 18? To answer your question, I thought 18 was a fair exam. It made me think and wasn't all just easy things that I knew right away, but it was fair. Felt like the real thing in that sense.

my pharm retention according to true retention is awful, like 60% but its always on of my best sections on exams. go figure.

Has anyone taken COMQUEST 400 Q self assessment or COMBANK/True-Learn's 200 Q self assessment exams? Is one better or more predictive of the actual exam than another?

I did the combank one. I took it like 5 days after taking comsae d. My combank was over 120 points higher. I have heard anecdotesto just average the two scores but idk man. perosnally I have just decided that if you get over a passing score on either one, youll probs at least pass comlex

Got a 239. Goal from the start of med school was a 240, so I suppose I cant be too upset by it. Really kind of sucks that Il probably get screened out by some rads programs now though because I didn't score 1 point higher, but it is what it is. Il post a copy of my reddit predictor thing below so people can see where I was at. Goodluck to everyone in here and a big thanks to all you guys who helped me along the way, literally don't know if I could've gotten where I scored without all y'all. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions. Now on to the rest of my life..

239 is a great score! I also fell about 8 below my predicted but we got very solid scores on one of the hardest standardized tests in the world in the middle of a pandemic and that is a huge accomplishment. Enjoy your freedom and whatever summer you have left before rotations start!

Test 6/19 and just got my score 241. My goal was 230 and I am so, so happy/in shock. All of this was the worst, and we all deserve to put it behind us so best of luck to you all!

UWSA1: 220 (3/22)
NBME 17: 203 (4/4)
NBME 15: 207 (4/18)
NBME 20: 211 (5/21)
UWSA2: 237 (6/6)
NBME 18: 236 (6/13)
Free 120: 82% (6/13)
Finished Uworld 6/8 at 64%
Predicted 236

Cyrus you still killed it bud! Youll be good for a lot of rads programs with a 239 as an MD. How close to test day did you take those UWSAs and did you feel the real deal felt like them?

YOU GUYS. I'm on my lunch break for COMLEX right now. What in the actual f*** is this exam, I feel so much worse than when I was taking Step. I have no idea what they're asking like 95% of the time, I feel Iike I'm failing wtf is happening

Welcome to the absolute ****show that is COMLEX. It was definitely worse than Step imo. Hang in there and know that you are far from alone in the way you are feeling! No one important will care about your COMLEX score so just pass that s**t and be done with it.

I am actually concerned about passing at this point. Looked up 2, got both wrong lol. They're asking the most random crap I've never seen before. I'm worried.

Lol like I could not remember for the life of me which one it was. It was also in the last block so I was completely exhausted and probably couldn't have told you what disease HIV causes at that point.

They kept hitting me over the head with radiculopathies and spinal disorders like spondylosis, spondylothesis, spinal stenosis etc and I'm pretty sure I got most of those wrong since I didn't hit those topics hard at all. It sucks that they hone in on a few topics for 400 questions because if those topics aren't your strong points, it's a struggle. Hopefully the second block goes better for you!

lol I dont think I can take an easy day now before comlex tmr. Feel like I need to cram

Literally the worst test I’ve taken. Like they took people off the street and asked them to write 400 questions for this test. Questions made no sense, didn’t have time to think, marked half the test, truly felt like I failed.

Honestly just know your dermatomes really well. It seems like a lot of students have reported having a lot of dermatome stuff on their exam this year so have that and viscerosomatics down cold. Together those were easily 50-60 questions on my exam.

Yeah there's a reason PDs prefer USMLE over COMLEX. It's not a well-written test at all and you'd think they'd mix up the content a bit more since they insist on it being 400 questions. I legit had 5-6 questions asking me about Duchenne's and the same thing with PKU. I think there was only one block I marked less than 10 but the rest I was easily marking 15+.

will do. I mean assuming 60% is at least a passing score, I only need to get 240 right lol

I think the passing line is actually closer to 50% based on past years threads but definitely shoot for 60% to be safe lol. Last year they speculated that 50% = 400, 60% = 500, 70% = 600 and so on. And apparently there's 80 experimental questions on COMLEX too.

If youre worried I cant imagine how some other kids feel lol dont forget how much ass you were kicking during dedicated. Youre going to be fine lol seriously
