Official 7/27 Exam Thread!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
WHen was your last test date?

I took it the end of April. I didn't think i was going to retake it but here i am. whoo!

Hang in there, only a couple weeks left! We got this! 🙂

Thanks. it does help to get on SDN and realize that i am not the only one going thru this. At least we all understand each other.

Bad news though. Major crisis at work and my boss/PI told me that I am going to have to work a lot for next two weeks INCLUDING the weekends. So i may not have a choice but to push my date back :scared: i originally wanted to actually take off work for week and just dedicate it to MCAT but i guess thats not happening. the worst timing ever. I just started looking into it and im thinking Aug 10th is a possible date? no later than that. i want to apply this cycle!!! i have to! Sorry. i had to vent.

Yeah retake for me too and im REALLY struggling to study. I just don't feel like im putting as much as i did last time. yikes.

It feels great to know someone's going through this too. I took the first one in April too! You'd think retaking to get a better score we'd work harder but... I JUST DON'T WANNA *tantrum* XD My focus definitely doesn't last as long, and it doesn't help that the TBR practice tests are ridiculously long! I've yet to sit and finish one in a normal time/setting. My practice scores are barely higher than my previous take, yet for some reason I feel more confident (I guess because all the material is starting to get redundant?).
I just want this to end.

5/24 retaker here for 6/26.

My Bio was 3 points lower than my normal and speaking about normal, I didn't have a good grasp of mechanics at the time.

Hopefully things go in my favor and I can get a 31+

The normal force on an inclined plane is the y-component of the weight (mg).

I hope a question like that pops up.

Given that you can write the y-direction as any direction you like, that advice only works if you tell us which direction you consider y to be in.

It would be much more appropriate to say that to find the normal force you must find the component of mg that is perpendicular to the ramp which is mgcos(angle) assuming you use the angle between the floor and the ramp surface.

so far ive done TPR 1,2,3,4,5. TPR Cracking 1. AAMC 3.

planning on doing TPR Cracking 2,3. AAMC 4,5,7,8,9,10,11.

so the plan is to continue doing 2 a week. and then review + brush up on concepts.

doing quick read of the EK manuals. Finished EK 101 but i dont think its great practice- but good for just getting used to doing 1 hour tests.

How have you done on those? I usually get 10-12 on PS/BS (lately more on the 12 side) but usually 8-9 avg on the VRs (except for one 11 on Cracking 1).
The MCAT Review Series are pretty intense as well, you should try just 1.

just finished taking TPR 5 and got 8/10/10.

with bio i think its a lot to do with learning the basics and then being able to be flexible to new situations where you need to apply your knowledge.

with ochem, physics and gchem i think its more rote memorization. and with verbal ive been using tpr and ek so far. you just have to hope for decent passages but still focus on every single question- every question matters but have the confidence in yourself to sometimes narrow it down to 2 and then pick one and move on

I've been getting PS10, V7-8, BS13-14 on TPR exams. Do you think these predict scores on the real mcat?

I haven't tried the MCAT series exams. Will let you know how they go!

Anyone doing TBR CBTs?

I've done #1 and 2 and got a 30 on both. But, I did AAMC 4 and Kaplan #6 and received a 33 and 37, respectively. I'm kinda curious about the score discrepancy.. Has anyone else found the TBR's low balling them?

TBR's disclosure letter includes a bit about each section on the TBR test generally scoring about 1 point below the AAMC scores.

Anybody having problem at all with PS? Can't seem to increase my score from 10...I always run out of time in this section 😡

Anyone care to enlighten me on how to remain calm during PS? Really need it!

I just can't seem to budge my scores much-

AAMC results: PS, VS, BS
Test 5: 8, 12, 9
Test 7: 8, 13, 9
Test 8: 8, 12, 9
Test 9: 9, 11, 11

I've been doing detailed review after each test, then studying based on that info for about a week in between each test.
I've been focusing on GChem, Physics and Bio, and pretty much ignoring Ochem and verbal (I got 100% OChem question right on test 9 and had a lot of ground to cover with bio).

What's the consensus on how much lower the real score tends to be than the practice test avg?

I'm planning on taking AAMC 10 tomorrow and reviewing the weak spots until I take AAMC 11 on Monday the 23rd. Thoughts, suggestions?

Same here, I've hit a plateau 🙁
So far (scores after finishing content review):
July 5th: TPR 4: 32 (10/9/13)
July 7th: TPR 5: 31 (10/9/12)
July 9th: AAMC 4: 32 (10,11,11)
July 11th: AAMC 5: 37 (13/13/11) <----- pretty sure this was a fluke!
July 14th: AAMC 7: 32 (10/9/13) <----- aaand back down again 🙁

DocHHopeful, I have the same questions as you, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help! I'm writing AAMC 8 tomorrow, then 11 on friday.

Advice on how to get off the plateau? (in the upwards direction, of course) I've been reviewing the tests, reviewing my notes, and going through online passages that came with the TPR course (though they're not going too well).

Agh I can't believe it's a week and a half away!!!!

Just finished AAMC 7 and the score has gone down all the way to 27. Gonna be crying when the time comes. The PS seemed so much easier than other tests, but hell no, I've been reading many questions the wrong way. I interpreted differently most of the time.

On the other hand, Kaplan 4 taken few days before resulted in an identical score for PS. IF I got more than 10 on the real thing, I will be donating three months of my paycheck to go towards the women shelter...or something.

Took the 7/14 exam, just signed up for this one so I have two to choose from when I release.

You know you can't "choose" scores, right?

If you do worse on this one, that will look pretty terrible and many schools will just average together both scores anyways (with more emphasis on the most recent one).

Better off signing up for one after you get your 7/14 scores back..

For reals. Imagine you get a 36 the first time and a 27 the second.

I'm going only DO, so I guess my thought process is that if I do well enough on my first one I will go ahead and release it then and not worry about the second score. I didn't feel like the 1st one would be representative of what I can do, so we'll see!

is anyone where they don't want to be iin terms of scoring right now? scared out of my mind right now.

good luck

yuuup absolutely :scared: My scores have somewhat plateaued, going up/down within about 1 point, no matter how much studying I do. It's so frustrating! And it's not just the past few tests either, my scores have basically stayed the same since the end of June. Gah!

Uh, yes...I want to be on the other side of 7/27!

I did AAMC 10 today and got 10/11/10, so another 31 for me. My top 2 schools avg (I think) 31 and 34 respectively. Dang, I don't want to have to move!

I'm definitely going to sit the exam, but here's my quandary-I work FT and studied over about 5 months very sporadically, and then over the past 1.5 weeks have had time off to study FT. My score went from a 29 on AAMC 5 to 31 on AAMC 9&10 (which I hear are harder). So study time has definitely been an issue for me.

Are there any major cons to applying to a handful of schools (say 3-5) just to take a shot if I don't do as well as I'd like, then sit again in January for next cycle and be able to apply early in the cycle?

This is my first time taking the MCAT (and hopefully last).

AAMC 7-25 (7, 9, 9)
AAMC 8- 27 (8, 10, 9)

hoping for a continued upward trend, i got AAMC 9, 10, 11 left to go. I am hoping for a 28 on the real thing for DO school, hope its physics heavy! lol

i also notice i could get a 10+ on bio if i didnt second guess some silly questions

I think I have found my weakness, and potentially a new way to approach verbal.

In PS, I tend to MIX things that are very trivial. Just now I reviewed one question where I basically assumed that increased pH means increased H+. That sort of thing. My solution would be writing down as many little facts as I could possibly write during tutorial. Let hope I don't make mistakes there too. PS is flatlining at 11 at this moment.

Verbal: I usually get confused or disinterested, but now I pretend that I am having a conversation with the author. And also, when progressing to new paragraphs, I would ask myself what the next point the author will try to make. Usually scoring between 8 to 9, with a 12 as an outlier, but the last two taken I got 10.

I don't have problems with BS, but I hate hate hate immunology. Never quite understand the various topics I got wrong on my tests. Prayin for more organic :xf: and hoping to actually hit my highest BS ever, 14. Average lately is around 12.

Took AAMC 11 today, did atrocious in verbal and one point below my average in PS 🙁
My practice test scores have been so inconsistent, it's frustrating! One more week AHH!!!

I feel exactly the same way. How did you feel about bio?

I didn't think bio was too bad. I'm a retaker, and my previous mcat was pretty orgo heavy and the passages seemed to be a lot longer, so it seemed a bit easier to me. I scored an 11 on aamc 11, and my previous mcat bio was a 9.
That Ebola passage was terrible though! I probably spent like 12 minutes on it and I still missed 3 ugh!

Yea that passage was a tough one. A 2 point increase is great. I was surprised is did 3 points higher on this one than my average, 10. I think i saw the horror stories of how bad the Ebola passage was so i read all the passages more carefully. I think that really helps haha because before i would end with a little over 20 min to spare, but for this test i had like 4 min.

I'm taking the 7/27 test too! And... I'm terrified/depressed/anxious. I want to get it done, but I wish it were still a month away!! I haven't been studying nearly as much as I should. For some reason, I thought doing an REU, writing my thesis, and taking the MCAT would all fit really well into this summer. Guess how well that worked out?
Oh well. I'm planning on doing 2-3 more practices this week. I've done AAMC 3, 5, and 8 and GS 1. Any suggestions on tests to warm up with before game day?
Good luck to all of you!

Yes you can! Schools see absolutely nothing wrong with a 2nd MCAT score. If you get a 24 and a 34, they take the 34, put it into their admissions statistics, and call it a day. You are wrong Jep... So chill. I wish I would have taken my second test a week after my first. Instead I waited 3 months and am probably less prepared now than I would have been a week or 2 later.

Did anyone try AAMC 6? I understand it has been retired...is it realistic to even attempt it? I was afraid it might not be relevant anymore. Trying it out I found the questions were not so bad.

Don't be misleading. Schools have different policies regarding multiple scores.

For example,

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...Ex2MjlBTDE0bXFXNGFZczZqYTZKb2c&hl=en_US#gid=0

Some (ex. U of Miami-Miller) take all scores into account, putting more weight onto most recent MCAT
Others (ex. Loyola) averages MCAT scores
A few others (ex. Commonwealth) only consider the most recent score.

Each policy is different. All adcoms do not necessarily plug in the 34 and call it a day so he should look into the schools he is considering to see their policies.

Would be pretty terrible if a school only considers the most recent MCAT and his score drops from the 1st administration to the 2nd.

but what do I know, I'm just using facts

I'm taking the 7/26 test and I'm definitely worrying a lot.

Recent scores:
#8: 11 9 1 (didn't take bio)
#9: 9 9 9
#10: 9 10 10
#7: 10 10 10 (finally broke 30!)

Hoping I can keep going today and tomorrow and do even better on Thursday 🙂

At this point the dream of breaking a 45 is officially dashed :meanie:

Just took AAMC 10 with finally some real improvement in PS (12). Got my average BS (12). Lowest VR (8). Oh what do I do about VR..🙁

Anyone else not a morning person? I can't believe I have to wake up around 6:30 to get ready and be alert at 8 in the morning :scared:

I'm used to waking up at 11 or 12

I'm such a night owl.. it's been tough. I've been working on the whole getting up early thing all week! So far, I'm fully-functional by 830.Hopefully, the old adrenaline kicks in Friday morning and I'll be ready to go by 8!

Anyone else look at the 6/21 thread? They just got their scores back today. Don't look at it unless you want to have a nervous breakdown.

I'm not a morning person which is why I took it at 1pm the first time. I realized this was a bad idea because 1) it's half way through the day, so your mind is not as fresh (even if tired) and 2) idk about you but I get hungry more often around that time than in the morning.
Hungry me<<<<<<<<<<<Tired me lol

Welp, three days. I just want to break 30 ): What is this madness?! I know I can do it because I've gotten 10+ in each section, but never at the same time. -__-"

Take a cold shower to wake up in the mornings... Activate your sympathetic nervous system and get some epinephrin being secreted guys!

I have to be out of my house by 6:20 to make sure I get to the testing site at least 30 minutes early. I'm a bit upset though-- I just came home from my apartment at my campus yesterday (to take the test back at home), and I realized I forgot to bring "My Lucky MCAT Shirt" I got freshman year as part of some free swag from kaplan 🙁

Pull an all-nighter two nights before, sleep at 6pm after being up 30 hours, wake up at 4 am testday refreshed as hell. Four hours to get yourself ready to mutilate the test.

Unless you do that every 3 days, that does not sound like a very smart plan. Notsureifsrs 🙁

SAME!! My practice tests have been very unbalanced with a different section being the lowest each time.. which is strange because the last time I took the MCAT I got a 9-9-9.
Crossing my fingers for a 10-10-10 this time around!

Hello All,

I only have time for 1 more aamc practice test. Between 10, 9, and 8. Which one would be most beneficial in terms of just PS and BS sections?

Good luck to everyone! I'm sooo ready for this to be over with!
