*~*~* Official AACOMAS Questions Thread 2013-2014 *~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question (again): How long should it take for transcripts to reach AACOMAS without the request form? Anyone have a ball park estimate?
It should reach AACOMAS at the same time - it just might take longer to process it. AACOMAS says processing may be delayed with no request form, but I've seen people in the past say that it wasn't a problem.

If you can't replace the grade, it would be more worthwhile to either retake a different class (if you did poorly in any other classes) or take an upper division science class instead.

But it was gross anatomy. Wouldn't a retake and getting a hi 80 be better than leaving it as a non-pass while taking another (higher level) course?

So it should still be processed before June 3rd (I sent it May 13th) right?
Not sure - I sent the request form with all my transcripts so I don't have experience with it.

Anatomy is an important class so it might be worth it to retake it, but you can also show adcoms that the non-pass was a fluke by doing well in a different upper-division science class. Which one looks better is pure speculation by anyone here (unless we can get some input from Goro). The pre-allo forum - where retakes don't replace grades - is full of "should I retake?" threads and the advice I've seen is usually to move on and do well on upper-division classes. Do some searching over there and you'll find plenty of threads discussing the pros and cons of retake vs not retake when the retake won't replace the previous grade.

Hm
I see. Did not know that. I searched endlessly in the DO forum, yet the answer was in the MD forum!
Will look into it!

BTW, who is this Goro?

Thanks

anybody know if you have to enter "Intro Biology w/ Lab" like you would for AMCAS. Or do you just add "Intro Biology" as it appears on your transcript. I cannot find it in the directions so I am assuming just enter it as is on the transcript but then I don't know how they would know for sure the class included lab or if it was separate???

Here's one to get you started:

That poster got a no-pass on a language class, which is a little different from your anatomy scenario, but you can see the different opinions. Whichever route you take, the most important thing is to do better from now on. 🙂

Yea.. definitely.
It was the only F I ever gotten in my whole educational career so far. Quite sad about it.

However, I am done school right now and applying at the moment.
Therefore, probably will not be taking any more classes at the moment.

Going to take a look into these threads.

Cheers

Quick question:

My basic bio course is "Foundations of Modern Biol I"

The lab component was included. I didn't find anything in the AACOMAS manual that specifically addressed if I should add "with Lab" to the end of the course title, like what AMCAS tells applicants to do.

Any thoughts?

This is exactly what I asked about a couple of posts up.

Anyone?

I've never heard of a need to add "with lab" or anything like that. My gen bio courses showed up as "General Biology I/II" and there weren't any problems.

I have the same question too. Not just with bio but also with chem because my lecture and lab were in the same class, so should I include "chem w/ lab"?

I notice on the app it said if you were on the dean's or president's list note it once and in the explanation explain that you received more than once BUT, there is no space for an explanation.

Put it in the organization box, there are 100 characters you can use.

Is anybody entering info in the first person? For example "I volunteered hours at blah blah" versus "Volunteered hours at blah blah"

I used both.
Whichever fits better

QUESTION:
I was in the military and took a developmental class when I got home from deployment "Intermediate Algebra". It has a grade on my transcript of "DA". D for developmental, and A for the grade I received in the class. My college says developmental courses count toward the total hours earned, but not towards my GPA. I'm just looking for advice on how this would be listed on my AACOMAS. Would this just be listed as an A or something different?

Is it okay to bullet your job description in work experience or use a paragraph format?

When i'm filling out my four year degree in the course work section, my degree is not listed. I graduated with a degree in Viticulture and Enology from UCD which I guess is kind of Agriculture but we definitely covered a ton of chemistry and other hard science. How should I list it? No Degree?? There's no "other" selection.

Question! How are we supposed to enter Lab courses (gen chem or gen bio labs) that do not have a separate credit awarded but still show up on your transcript with 0 credit even though the credit is included in the actual course?? I looked through the instructions but didn't find anything! Maybe I just overlooked it in the instructions lol

Might be a simple question but I do not know how to address it. I bowled for my college team and I am trying to figure out how I should list that in my EC's. It seems pretty straight forward in the title what I did. So in like description do I just list the years I did this? Just seems like an odd description just saying that I bowled for 4 years during college.

Not sure if bullets will work with the format of the descriptions. You can ask AACOMAS if you want. Otherwise, paragraph form is the safe bet.

There's a "Science, Other Bio" major. That's probably the closest in my opinion.

Does the 0 credit class have a grade attached to it? You can enter classes as 0 credits, but you have to have a grade for it. Otherwise I'm really not sure - ask AACOMAS.

Unless you won any awards or did anything else worth mentioning, "Bowled for 4 years during college" is pretty much all you can say. I had some really short descriptions like that for a few self-explanatory ECs.

Is there a limit to work/activities in AACOMAS? Are people grouping them like in AMCAS?

OK, so I have a leadership position in an organization I also volunteer at. Since these positions have separate responsibilities, should I list them separately as well?

Also, what should I put under "Position Title" if I did research?

Is your leadership position volunteering? If so, make your title whatever your leader title is then describe it was on a volunteer basis

Label your position as team member or something and describe you were a team member for your bowling team

Heck. Include anything that you feel that shaped your life.
It can do no harm IMO

Nope. The grade for the lab was included in the lecture. I will be sending them an email

does anyone know if its ok to lump multiple activities into single categories/titles for EC/Community/Volunteer and using the description box to list each activity and a brief summary instead of having a huge list of activities ?

For example:

Record 1:
Position Title - Campus Involvement
Name of Organization: Various
Description:
Biological Honors Society - (insert dates)
-Treasurer: (insert duties)
Science Constituency Council- (Insert dates)
AMAS- (Insert Dates)
-Vice president : (insert duties)
ISA- (Insert Dates)

Record 2:
Position Title- Volunteer
Name of Organization: Various
Description:
XYZ Hospice (75 hours/6 mo.)
-Provided comfort and support to patients by reading, talking, playing board games, etc.
XYZ Hospital ( 100 hours / 6 mo.)
-Provided comfort and support to patient families. Greeted and escorted guests.
XYZ Animal Shelter (25 hours/ 4 mo.)
- Walked, bathed and interacted with dogs, helped clean kennels and litter boxes.

This would essentially condense all my EC/Volunteer Community Work to around 4-5 Records as opposed to 8-10 . Would that work? The only downside I see is that I would have very little space left to describe how any of these activities impacted me/were meaninful to me. But wouldn't secondaries and interviews give me the opportunity to do that?

I have a few questions on the extracurricular section.

- I have only 3 or 4 hours of DIRECT physician shadowing from shadowing a DO in the ER. However I volunteered in the same department and now am a staff member working directly with the doctors --- Should I put physician shadowing down at all or is the low number going to raise a red flag?

- I had a volunteer experience the summer BEFORE my Freshman year in a hospital that was aimed at gaining clinical experience. Is it safe to put on my application?

- How in depth should I go? For example I was the captain of my adult hockey league team. Not terribly impressive, but perhaps could be viewed as a leadership position. Is it worth it to put it on?

If I can't remember the exact month I started a position (either May or June, not sure), should I just make a guess? Does it matter if I'm a month off?

Also, if I have more than one entry for the same organization, should I have a description of the organization both times?
Yeah, just estimate. I would try to condense those entries into one entry and describe the different positions/duties at that organization.

I think it's probably not worth making a shadowing EC for numbers that low. Make an EC for volunteering in the ER and throw in that you shadowed a doc for 4 hours in the description.

Yep

It's totally up to you. Personally, I think a few ECs like that are good to have in there to show that you're a balanced applicant.

I was told that as long as you submit your AMCAS before June 15th that you will be in the first batch of applications and your application will be processed by July. Is the same thing true for ACOMAS? Does anyone know if ACOMAS has information about this anywhere?

Thanks for your help! 🙂

Hey guys, I was wondering how you are all counting your hours spent doing research. I have 2 semesters where I was doing benchwork for my PI, but I'm not sure if I should be counting strictly the hours that I was in the lab, or the hours spent outside the lab as well preparing for journal presentations/researching 😕

Anyone here can chime in?

When clicking request transcript, which Student ID should we put in?

In high school, I took a college credit combined anatomy/physiology course for two quarters, getting a B and B+. Years later, at the university I graduated from, I took an anatomy course one semester and a physiology course another semester, getting an A and a B. Can I list the newer grades as retake courses for the combined anatomy/physiology course even though the credits weren't awarded from the same institution? By doing so, it would bump my sGPA from 3.55 to 3.61 and my total GPA from 3.47 to 3.48. Any advice?

Your student ID. If it asks for AACOMAS ID it would state AACOMAS ID. I printed the Transcript request form and my AACOMAS ID was already printed on the top of the page.

You might have to email AACOMAS about that but I'm assuming the high school college credit will be labeled as AP and thus not factored into your GPA, while the more recent courses you took will be.

Probably both. I'd assume you list ALL hours spent devoted to that activity alone.

I've never heard of a specific date that will get you in the "first batch" of applications. It probably depends on the school. Some schools start reviewing applications earlier than others. That's why the earlier you submit, the better.

I did this exact thing and it worked for me. I listed Anatomy (3 credits) as a last repeat for A&P I (3cr) and Physiology (3 cr) as a last repeat for A&P II (3 cr). As long as the credits line up it should work for you. Not sure if the AP status of the class will affect that or not.

The thing is each of those entries is 600+ characters so I would prefer to keep them separated. Would this hurt me in any way?
If you have a lot to talk about then that's fine. In that case, I would do a short description of the organization in both entries.

If you submit early to be verfied by one school, are you able to update PS and ECs later on when you submit to additional schools?

This is the same exact question I was going to ask. lol
Also my laptop broke, which just sucks.

After a transcript has been "logged", how long before it becomes processed and officially received?

I wondered this as well... I had a transcript "logged" last friday and when I just checked tonight it said it was received.

Do remedial / developmental courses count toward my AACOMAS GPA? I received an A in the course. Except it is marked "DA" on my transcript because it was a developmental/remedial math course. Just wondering how this should be put on my AACOMAS?

First, you're missing one "A" in "AACOMAS" 🙂

Have you tried sending AACOMAS a quick message through the portal system? They are usually pretty fast to respond, and maybe they'd have an accurate answer?

Moved to composite thread.

I have a couple courses that I withdrew from in the early years of college. I received a W on my transcript, so at least it wasn't counted as an F or anything. Later on, I retook these courses. So my question is, should I classify them as "Withdrawn", or list them as one of my repeats since technically I retook them and received a different grade other than a W?

So those who were having issues with their official MCATs being reported on AACOMAS has your scores been reported yet? I put in my ID about 3 weeks ago and nothing then I my ID again a week ago and still I have yet to see my official scores arrive.

Any Advice?

I'm having the same issue. Requested scores twice already and still nothing. AACOMAS said that they have been posted, but seem to be having trouble with the technical aspect of getting it posted.

List them as withdrawn. The repeat classification only matters for GPA purposes, and since they aren't affecting your GPA, there's no need to list them as repeated.

Is there anywhere you can see examples of descriptions of AACOMAS activities?
I don't know of anywhere on SDN where they would be posted, but rarely some people will post them on their MDApps page. Honestly though, everyone will have a little different style with EC descriptions and there isn't really a right or wrong way to do it. Just make sure you're describing relevant info concisely and you'll be fine.
