Include it, but maybe add some added personal details like favorite movie and fiction genres, and the sports (with their settings) that you engage in.
Ah okay awesome! Do I just include the 9999 hours for everything overall? Or should I split the hours by activity? Even then some of the hours would still be quite large and probably need the 9999 designation. For example I have been reading since I was a child, and have definitely put it at least 9999 hours into my physical recreation activities.

Hours for hobbies aren't important, nor is dividing them into subtotals. It's just important that you have them. The 9999 suggests that the hours are not known and that rough calculations aren't possible. Adcomms will be more interested in how much involvement you had in college, anyway. You might consider adding recent hours/per week of leisuretime activities, if you are so inclined.

Oh okay. So I should put the weekly time commitment in the activity description, and have the 9999 for the overall time or just leave it blank?

I don't think it will let you leave it blank. I wouldn't enter a zero. So your first suggestion is best.

Since the weekly time commitment would be in the narrative, you can give a range if that suits you, like, "I engaged in these activities 2-10 hours weekly through college, and anticipate continuing through the application year," or somesuch.

Thank you very much!

I apologize if this was already asked but I've been endlessly searching for an answer.

One of my "most meaningful experiences" is a community service club that was both medical and non-medical experience. How do I go about this? If I were to separate the club into two sections, that would take up two of my most meaningful experiences.

Thanks in advance!!

If you want to keep everything through this organization in a single space, your options would be to list it under either Other or Extracurricular, then make it clear through the name of the activity (and your description) that it includes both medical and nonmedical community service. This is not an ideal solution unless you have other listings under each of those tags already. It would be far better to split it into two dedicated spaces with the more appropriate and specific tags.

Thank you. I'll probably split it into the more specific tags and designate only one of them as my most meaningful experience while tying it into the other section I suppose (if that's more plausible). Thanks for the help!

1) Regarding research, if I just submitted an abstract to present at an ACS conference in October, how do I list it? I started this summer as a undergrad fellow for a summer program, but thankfully we made some pretty successful and novel findings, so the poster I had to create for the program is going to be used as the initial aspect for a poster to present at an ACS meeting this fall (already submitted for approval) and then that abstract will be used on our manuscript once that is submitted for JOC publication. How should I list this?

2) Also, for activities like umpiring where I worked for different organizations and in different towns, should I just list one of the organizational leaders for the contact, even though they may not be aware of me having worked for a different team/league? I guess I'm just kind of nervous about them calling to verify the activity and then this man having the honest response like, "well he only worked for me for 2 years, not the 4 like he said".
1) A submitted abstract is not guaranteed to be accepted and really doesn't belong on the application. But if you feel compelled to mention it anyway, put an addendum about it at the end of your affiliated Research entry.

2) You might list the most recent with its dates and contact in the header and then after its description in the narrative space, take a paragraph break and add, "Also umpired 2/12-6/14 for zz hours with [Organization]. Contact: etc.

What is the recommended way for listing multiple different jobs I have held? I have used up all 15 slots, but still have a couple of jobs that I would like to highlight. I have been required to work every semester on campus/in town as well as at home during breaks, so I have held many different positions. I dont care about the side end jobs that only took up a few hours a week, but I certainly want to show that I have always maintained at least 25+ hours/week throughout my entire college career, and I currently have two periods of time where I don't have a job listed due to running out of space. Should I just list a general "non clinical paid positions" with the "repeated" option, and then just list the date ranges for each job and list those jobs in the description? This seems like the only way to do it, but then I won't have enough room most likely for any descriptions or contacts for each different position. Sorry if this is a petty question lol
You might list them just as you would multiple shadowing gigs in a single space (see example in post #2). Use a name for the space that applies to all of them, like Other Short-Term Collegiate Employment. Use the header for info about the most recent. Give a brief description about that first job and role. Continue to list them in reverse chronological order, preceding each with date span, hours/week, and total hours, then job description (role isn't needed if it's intuitive from the job name), location, and contact. If you run out of space to give all the usual details, you can add at the end, "Also held jobs as Menards cashier, Olive Garden wait staff, and lab rat handler for three succeeding summers, 30-40 hours/week each."

Guys, Is there anyone who could read / proof-read my work/activities section? Submitting soon and would appreciate the help.

I have interesting / solid ECs as a non-trad.

Sup.
Here are my stats rn:
GPA- 3.95 (overall)
4.00 (minor)
MCAT: 503
Treasurer of two different clubs, research, tutorin, peer leader, hospital volunteering, mission trip, shadowing, several jobs, and other EC's. I have a good amount of hours for most of my EC's especially the ones that i have been doing since my freshman year.
Should i still apply this cycle? I am possibly retaking my mcat in september just havent signed up yet. I know my score isnt too strong though, which is why i have been hesitant. What do you guys think?

Sorry - I searched this forum to get this question answered but didn't find anything.

If I did similar things for 2 organizations, I want to put them in one box. I put Organization # 1 in the contact info and then in the description, should I include a line with all the contact info/name/email on a separate line or just mention it , incorporation as a responsible.

Under PersonXYZ(Direction of ABC, [email protected]) of Organization # 2, I furthered.....

A question about whether to apply lies outside the scope of this thread. Perhaps you could start a thread in the WAMC forum (What are my chances), giving more details, along the lines suggested in the sticky at the top of that forum. Feel free to tag me from there, though there are other "Chancers" that will be happy to reply.

Yes, you would include similar information in the narrative space for the second activity as you did for the first (as you suggested), including name of organization and location if they differ and dates. Also give a subtotal of hours for each location, as then you can put a grand total in the Total Hours box for both experiences.

See post #1519 a few posts above this one.

@Catalystik, I'm truly touched to hear your response to my question. It's very nice and supportive. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 😍

I dont' have enough space to put the description + other organizations contact info in the description box. I just mentioned the names and put hours in the "Repeat activity " section.I wonder if it's really such a terribly awful deal-breaker to not mention the name/contact info :-(

Maybe it won't be a deal breaker, but some adcomms might wonder if there's a reason you don't want that organization to be contacted to legitimize the activity. Isn't it possible to slightly shorten the first description to squeeze it in?

Guys, I'm submitting soon and would really appreciate your comments on one of my MMA regarding content and direction.
I'm a non-trad teacher. I'll delete/edit the post after I have received a few quality comments no the MMA for private.

May I please post the MMA paragraphs of concern?

If I wrote about certain extracurriculars I did in my personal statement, but also marked some of those as my most meaningful activities, will that look bad?I wrote about different things, so i did not necessarily repeat myself completely.

It's fine to cover the same activities in the PS and MM areas, though most would try to cover different territory in each and try to vary the vocabulary where an overlap of information is necessary.

Hi guys I hope someone can help me with a situation that I am currently in. So when I filled out my work/experiences section, I was working at my family's Chinese restaurant and I planned on working there for the entire gap year which is what I put for my hours and dates, but since then the restaurant has closed due to a fire. Do I have to notify all the medical schools I applied to about this situation and what is the best approach to go about this? Any help would be great!

Will you replace the activity with other employment?
How long before repairs are complete and the restaurant reopens?
How many years have you helped at the restaurant already, and did you distinguish between completed and future hours?
Have you returned all your secondaries?

Yes I do plan on replacing it with another job as soon as everything gets figured out and I have only filled out two secondary applications. We have been given an estimate of at least December until the restaurant is ready to open which I plan to go back and work when it is done. Since I worked mostly during the summers I did distinguish between completed hours but since I was planning on working there all year, I did add future hours from the start day of May 2016-August 2017.

Future hours aren't much regarded as it's well known by adcomms that unanticipated bumps in the road can happen. So distinguishing Completed vs Future was a good move in your case.

Some Secondaries will have prompts that allow you to state the new plan. Others will allow update letters. For those remaining, I wouldn't worry about it, as the reason for your 4-5 month job hiatus and/or substitution is understandable.

Thank you so much for the quick response and help! This definitely takes some stress off everything. Thanks again!

Hi y'all
I was wondering if anyone could help me with this question. Should I write Dean's Honour Roll in the work/activities section and if so what hours do you put for it and who do you list as the contact person?
Also I really like yoga and in the past few years it has really changed my outlook on life and how I approach things. Should list is as a hobby and again who do you put as a contact person?
Thanks in advance for your help 🙂

1) You may include Dean's List, but keep in mind that your transcript speaks for itself as to your academic accomplishments, so it's not adding anything to your application. Most would group it with other recognitions if they mention it at all. If you elect to include it, you would enter zero hours, as you did not sit at a ceremony to accept a plaque or certificate. Your college Registrar would be the Contact (for all collegiate recognitions in the space).

2) Yes, a Hobbies entry is desirable. Again, most would group their hobbies unless they have a lot to say about one and need more narrative space. Hobbies doesn't require a contact person to be listed.

Hey, i'm new to SND and this question may have been answered before, but I attended 3 different leadership conferences. Can someone tell me the best way to list these and under what experience type should i place them. Any help is appreciated.

You may list them under Conferences Attended, but they will be of little benefit to your application unless you presented at or organized the conference. Their value to you comes more from the application of the lessons learned and demonstration of enhanced leadership skills within activities in which you became involved in the real world.

Thanks for your fast reply and the insight. I was elected SGA president after, and i have that listed as one of my 15, does that demonstrate application? And if so can I keep the 3 conferences listed?

SGA Prez is a clear application of leadership. You may keep the entry listing the three conferences, if so inclined, as it won't hurt you, but if you have any other not-yet-listed activity demonstrating a trait desirable in a future doc, switch it out. Even a Hobbies entry has more value in adcomm eyes.

Great, thanks for the advice. Was just debating the merits of the conferences before i pulled the trigger on submitting.

Do you guys think I shot myself in the foot by not elaborating on my "Most Meaningful Experiences"? I turned in the primary at the end of August; I was in such a hurry to finish before September that I felt like I had to skip that part. I just copied my <300 character activity description from my TMDSAS straight into the AMCAS one. I'm regretting it soooooo much right now 🙁

I have to admit that I've never seen anyone use up less than half the allotted characters for every single Activities entry, but having some succinct entries is not so uncommon. I'm guessing that with so few words, you didn't express much in the way of impact and insights gained, but perhaps you compensated with what you said in the PS. Regardless, while some reviewers will feel it reflects poorly that you failed to use the extra space allowed for Most Meaningful comments as suggested, it's possible some time-challenged adcomms will appreciate a minimum of verbiage, or won't really notice, (or won't care).

I'm sort of freaking out right now, but I'm taking extra precaution with my secondaries to sort of "fill in" the gaps. Deciding to apply OOS was a last minute decision. I was thinking finishing earlier would be more important than extra fluff about my cookie cutter EC's. I guess I'll see how it plays out...

If brief descriptions are good enough for Chuck Norris, surely others will follow . . . .

Freaking out over something that you cant do anything about will do nothing but cause you stress. It is done, accept it, and move on

Long time lurker, first time poster...

I am a non-traditional applicant. For several years after college, I worked as a teacher and a private tutor for high school students. How would I classify this work? Paid Employment - Non Medical/Clinical OR Teaching/Tutoring/Teaching Assistant?

Many thanks!

Most likely you would classify it as Employment, but you have the choice of picking Teaching, instead, if you feel it would better balance your application or carry forward the story you're conveying about yourself. You'd also have the option of splitting the two jobs of Teacher and Tutor into two separate categories.

Hey everybody, I have a quick question but i'm sorry if this isn't the place to ask!

Since I already work at the hospital (>1000) hours and have volunteered/shadowed in different departments for about 50 more hours, do I still need to be volunteering at the clinic? I volunteer at the Boys and Girls club as well as some on campus stuff, but it seems kind of pointless to keep cleaning up ED rooms anymore after patients leave for volunteer hours while I already work in a patient care job. Is this okay? I just don't want it to look like I don't volunteer, but I don't have many hours since I work there too.

What is your paid patient care job? How many dedicated shadowing hours can you claim? Are any of them in an office-based setting?

Thx for the reply! I am an ER scribe right now and started last june (~1100 hours). I've shadowed an oncologist for 30-40 hours and ortho guy for 2 days. Then I've volunteered on the hospice floor and in the chemo rooms for like 40 hours-ish. I have a lot more community based volunteering stuff since I'm at the hospital so much, but i just wanted to check

(Assuming you are not a distance scribe🙂 You are already more than fine for clinical experience, so if you wish to discontinue the medical volunteering, there'd be no downside considering your long-term (1+ years and counting) paid scribing and nonmedical community volunteerism. Many would consider the scribing to cover the shadowing expectation as well, but not all. So it's good you have some dedicated shadowing, too. About 50 hours of that is adequate. Perhaps a contact in the ED could connect you with an office-based primary care doc for 8-10 hours.
