Hi PandSers,

I'm wondering if any of you are disgruntled by Bard Hall and are contemplating getting off-campus apartments. If so, what has your experience been with that in terms of availability and price?

i think most of the poepel that live in bard know it isn't the most optimal of conditions, and just kinda suck it up for other reasons. realize that if you don't stay in bard your first year, you are not eligble for towers housing after that. it is very possible to get good off campus housing options, and if you have any desire to live in other parts of the city [which many poeple do] then it is a great idea. just realize that you wouldn't be a part of the 1st year socializing to the same extent [though seeing them in class all the time will certainly compensate a bit] as your fellow bardians, which maybe value added to some.

WOOOOOT, COLUMBIA!!! :hardy:

I'm actually excited about living in Bard, since it's a step up from the kind of dorm room I have now. I could see where it's not the ideal condition for everybody, though.

I have a friend who will be going to the dental school. She is disgruntled enough by Bard to look into getting her own apartment. From what I understand, yes, there are plenty available, and they're relatively close by and not too expensive. Good luck with your search!

Ugh...I hear the Bard pain...I've been living off campus at school for awhile, so I'm not looking forward to return to dorm life....but it's not that big of a deal I feel....I'm excited about going to NYC in a few months! 🙂

Does anyone know what the orientation schedule for August is looking like?

I think someone was telling me at the second look that they did a lot of fun NYC things during orientation, not the least of which was a trip to a Yankee game. This is great news for me because I love the Yankees. (Cut me, and I bleed Yankee pinstripes.) I can't remember any of the other things that they did. I think they might have gone to a Broadway play too. The only things I know for certain about orientation are that it lasts a week and that the white coat ceremony is on that Friday.

When are we supposed to get housing information? I filled out those ghetto address labels. I hope we hear stuff soon!

I think they are sending out the housing application either the end of this week or next week.

I've decided to live in Bard. It's going to be a stretch...I'm 29.

I also called the housing office this morning. They haven't put the applications in the mail yet, but she did say it would happen soon.

I also know that last year the new students went on a booze cruise and several people got sick, so stay on an upper deck!

Just wondering if anyone has received a housing application?

Nothing in New Jersey! +pissed+ (first time I've used that one)

I have a friend who will be going to the dental school. She hasn't gotten housing info yet either.

On a related note, does anyone know if we have to bring a phone to Bard? I know they have their own phone system, and in my old school that meant a digital system, which meant that you needed a special phone that they loaned us. (Yeah, it was kinda skanky.)

They don't have cable either, right? Not that I'll have any time to watch TV... 😳

Hmm...I have no idea about the phone...it doesn't list it in the "What to Bring" portion of the P&S singles housing thingie. (http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/hshousing/)

But they say that cable's an option if you want to pay for it....

And no A/C...I was about to complain about it...but I guess I'm thinking about how hot it is in the south....but NYC's probably still hot in the August/September, huh?

I interviewed at columbia, got waitlisted, and decided not to go there because of Bard. There is NO WAY i'm going back to dorm life with co-ed bathrooms and disgusting kitchens. I knew I wouldn't be happy there. I figured, I would have to live in some other part of manhattan, which I couldn't afford, so I just withdrew. U apoplogize if I offended anyone about this post. I'm wasted. Please excuse me.

I was planning on writing another bit about Bard Hall, but this is Columbia's 2007 thread and there should be any outsiders (like me) bashing the school. Good luck boys and girls!

Hey, SistaKaren. There's no central air in Bard, but at least they let you bring your own air conditioner. Normally, it can get very hot around here, but lately it feels like more like winter than summer, anyway. 😡

I can understand that people would be upset about having to live in a dorm again, but I don't think Bard is going to be that bad. At least, I hope not. I mean, it's one thing when you you live with a lot of underclassmen whose only priority is how much drinking and partying they can do before they're rushed to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, and it's another thing to live with med/dent/grad students who have little time for anything but studying. I think most of us will be mature enough to keep things pretty clean and quiet and not "$#!+ where we eat", so to speak. At least, that was the impression that I got when I stayed in Bard for two nights. Columbia students know how to party, but for the most part, I think they go out for that.

And another day goes by with no housing app in my mailbox! +pissed+

Hi Everyone,

I called the Housing Office yesterday. They told me the applications for single housing will most likely go out on Friday.

Hey Everyone,

I am new on this thread... I think I will be living in Bard too, from what I have seen the apartments are waaaayyy too expensive for me. A studio in Washington Heights is costing about 1400 a month, waaaayyyyy out of my budget!! I think Bard will be cool. We won't spend that much time there anyway and in the winter it is just across the street from classes and the gym is in the basement! I think it is a pretty good deal - there is nothing for under 1000 in NY... unless you share a studio with roommates, which I really don't want to do at this point 🙂

I don't think Bard will be that bad. As IntlMD07 said, it is so much cheaper than most of the alternatives.

The only think I'm confused about is what people eat? There are no kitchens right? Cafeterias? All foods that don't need cooking? All microwave all the time? Can we bring a microwave? Don't laugh at me 🙂

Yay Columbia! I have to admit I'm quite excited.

I think there are two kitchens in Bard. I know of at least the one on the top floor. From what I gathered when I visited, most people eat at either of the two food places in Bard Hall. There's the little cafeteria that we saw on the interview day, but they just opened a new place too in the basement. I haven't been there personally, but I was told it was a pretty good place to eat. I think people eat at the hospital cafeteria too. On top of all of that, there is a Subway nearby that is popular at lunch, and I was told that there are a few restaurants in the area that deliver. It seems like there are more food options than I originally thought there would be.

Merlin, I am all about the home cooked meals, let's cook in the kitchen once a week!!!

I just finished my 1st year, I don't live in bard, couples housing in the tower-but I think I can answer a couple of questions-
1. to the 29 year old, there were other "older" people living in bard, they loved it as much as everyone else (but see 3 just in case)
2. The phone, you need to bring your own, they have voice mail and such digital but you plug in your own phone, honestly I don't have a land line anymore, I just use my cell
3. People who lived in bard, loved it, and if you don't like living in bard you can move out as soon as you want (or even before you move in) to an empty room in one of the towers, you don't know your roommate but a couple of people took this option this year
4. AC-bard does not have AC, last year many people ran out and bought one and used like twice, it really depends how much you would use it. The towers have central air, so chances are you would only use it your first fall. This spring was crappy so no one was using it, I think they actually still have the heat on....too bad you guys aren't around many sales on used ACs on the boards
5. $1400 for a studio, are you smoking crack???? They rent from about $700-$1000, a good size 1 bedroom is about $1400
6. I will say this again, most of my classmates really like living in bard (a few hated it) but it is definitely a unique experience
I don't check this often but anymore questions just let me know.....

Got some correspondence from CU today!

There's an information packet, a sheet about meal services, info about the dental plan, a research questionnaire, a letter about the summer reading assignment (The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman), info about orientation ("rooftop BBQ, Broadway shows, restaurant outings, nightlife, and boat cruise"), an academic calander, info about email and voicemail, disability questionnaire, info about a primary care scholarship, a copy of the Hippocratic Oath, and a "Guidelines for Student Conduct" sheet. *Whew!* But there's no housing info!

I listed all of the stuff I got in my mailing because I got two copies of the big information packet (compiled by Dr. Lewis), and I'm wondering if they left something out. Any other P&Sers get this mailing today?

Not yet, but I figured that my mailing is two months delayed. I just got the one about the ID and the face book asking for my passport sized pictures.

I got it! I feel like my bedroom is one big filing cabinet.

Orientation sounds like it's going to be a blast. I actually went to a party with one of the P&S Club Co-Presidents. He seemed like a cool guy, so I'm sure the activities will be fun.

I also got that big packet today. Made me feel very loved 🙂

So, where did you guys go undergrad, just out of curiosity? I went to Duke.

I went to Drew University. There are probably three of you out there who know Drew, I bet, since it's so small.

While we're getting to know each other, why don't we talk about the P&S clubs we're interested in? I'm planning to audition for the choir and maybe the ladies acapella group, even though I have no experience with acapella singing. 😳 If time allows, I'd also be interested in the dance club and the Walker Percy Society.

So, did anyone else get a double copy of the Lewis information packet? There's so much stuff in that envelope, I can't think of anything they might have left out instead. 😛

🙁...I didn't get the packet! Did it get mailed to the home address? I get half my mail at my apartment and half of it at home from Columbia...oh well.

Anyhoo, I went to UNC-Chapel Hill...it's so weird to say "went" for me 🙂

Not too sure about the clubs...but I'm definitely interested in the musical guild. I've been sad that I haven't been able to fit music into my undergraduate career, so I hope I get to do it there 🙂

I went to Harvard...

I did a lot of singing in college so I will probably keep that up 🙂

I am thinking about the International Health Organization, Cultura and definitely the Photography Club! Must take advantage of having a darkroom set up in the building where I am going to live after they tore the one at Duke down half way through our Junior year. I also thought that roadrunners would be fun, but they wouldn't want me cause I run soooo slow...

I need to narrow down my clubs... 😉

anyone know how much bard hall costs per month? does this include utilities?

Tekram, it is not as straightforward as it seems, they base it on the size of the room. Here is the link:
http://www.healthsciences.columbia.edu/dept/hshousing/
I think it includes all electricity and internet. Cable is separate. I am not sure about the phone service, I will bring my cell.

Hehe, I'm painfully slow too but I think roadrunners sounds fun. We can be running buddies!

So no one has gotten real housing info yet huh?

I just got a confirmation from them that I submitted my request for a housing application! Does anyone know who are the lucky people who get the kitchinettes? Or the awesome corner rooms with the two windows? At this point I will even be happy with the one facing the street, anything but that little tiny room (28?) that looks like it was destined to be mine, just out of irony!
Merlin, running buddies sounds great, but don't tell me later that I didn't tell you I was slow!

"A long, long time ago"...i went to Boston U.

Regarding clubs, I plan on going to the Roxy and Exit a lot. Oh, P&S Clubs 🙂 I will most certainly be involved with the International Health Organization, BALSO, and the LAMBDA Health Alliance. If time permits, I'd really like participate in the Photo Club, and OF COURSE I will be a member of the Society of Bacchus.

Hey guys, I'm going into the third year at columbia this year, but can I still post on this thread? 🙂 I don't know anyone there since I'm transferring in, and even though I probably won't have much time, it would be nice to know a few people at least.

I envy you all with your guaranteed on-campus housing. I am freaking out right now about where I'm going to live - my rotations start at the end of this month, and the lady at the housing office said it's doubtful any on-campus housing (couple's housing that is) would open up before august. So I'm driving up this friday to talk to the off-campus housing person, and hopefully find a place. Aarrggh. But I'm so excited to be going to Columbia - once I figure all this out (and maybe get some financial aid) I'll be able to relax and enjoy it.

I graduated from MIT btw. Hey, maybe we should start our own SDNers club 😉 ...

Welcome, zpdoc! Where are you transferring from?

How could I forget about the Society of Bacchus? I'm definitely signing up for that one.

Did you guys see the other residence hall, the Georgian Residence? It seems pretty nice, with suites sharing a kitchen and a bathroom. Too bad the med students can't live there. 😳

Yeah, zpdoc, where are you transfering from? Sista Karen, are you originally from NC? How did you like Chapel Hill? I used to love walking around Franklin even though it was a 20 minute drive for me, he he... Soooo, how are we going to meet? Should we just go around in orientation asking randomly if people are on SDN? That would be funny... and weird...

Hey Intl..yup, I'm from NC...from Rocky Mount (about 1h and some change east of Durham/Chapel Hill). I LOVE Chapel Hill (I'll be here for a few more weeks). It's a great place to live. Didn't spend much time on 9th Street in Durham, eh? 🙂

I dunno about meeting, I guess it would be tough...then again, TranceKitten walked right up to me and asked me if I was SistaKaren at my Cornell interview. I guess I look like my avatar (then again, I was the only black girl there... 🙂 ) Hahaha....everyone can find me and then we'll go from there 😉

We could have a gathering in my room. Well, when I'm finally assigned a room 🙂

Just thought I would say hello to my future classmates. Can't wait to meet all of you this August. Anyone know when the housing stuff is being sent?

-Bones

SistaKaren - I did spend some time on 9th too, but as you know, 15 minutes covers it, hehe! I love Chapel Hill too, and I love Philly (where I am now), but I am looking forward to the excitement of NYC!!

LittleDrBob, get together in your room sounds great!

I can't wait to hear from housing so I can start to get rid of all of my furniture here (with a heavy heart... maybe I should just store it for next year).

Bones, welcome to the thread!!

I won't say that I am excited about classes starting because I don't want to be THAT girl  But I will say that I can't wait for orientation so I can meet you guys!

Have you guys all completed your immunization reqs already? I had to go fill 4 vials of blood to check all of the titers for MMR, Hep B and all... Not to mention the PPD once again! Oh well! Just whining a bit, it has been a long morning 🙂

Hey everyone, congrats on getting into Columbia..
I'm applying for fall 2004 and Columbia is one of my top choices...

I read on another thread that Columbia loves piano players - is this true or just an exaggeration? Thanks!

Hi, Steinway. That rumor is a little bit of an exaggeration, but like most schools, Columbia does like its students to have something about them that "stands out." Playing the piano will help, but it won't guarantee anything.

Intl, you had to do all that for the immunizations? I haven't gotten mine done yet. I was supposed to go this week, but my doctor decided to go on vacation. At least I got my passport photos taken today. It's kinda cheap that we have to take our own ID photos.

I'm not afraid of being THAT girl, so I will say that can't wait for classes to start. It's mostly due to nerves, though. I think I had a nightmare about class the other night... 😳

I had to do all that! No one trusts those third world immunizations

I am afraid of classes and afraid that our class will be hyper competitive to the point that nobody helps each other out! I am all about the helping each other part and would like to try studying in groups to some extent, there is so much material that I think talking it over in a group will allow everyone to consolidate the information better. Esp. in classes that require memorization, repeating things in groups helps a lot! The dental school forum is loaded with awful comments about how Columbia is cliqueish and competitive which I choose to ignore praying that my classmates will be different! Brilliant, well rounded and NOT COMPETITIVE!!!!! I know, I know, dreamworld 🙂

Funny how you brought up the immunizations. I just got home from getting stuck and drained for blood myself. My PCP can't believe that they actually want all the titers. Oh well...

I'm all about effecient study groups!!! I'm in!

AWESOME!!!! Two already constitutes a group!!! Look at us... June and we already have study groups, hehehe

My PCP also couldn't believe it! She thought that I was joking and then realized from the cover sheet that there was no way out of it, I have proof of an MMR booster from June 1998 and they want September! In the end it will be good to see how effective the third world vaccines are in the end... But then again, in the third world no titers = measles, mumps and rubella all together!

I get the feeling that things won't be too competitive among the med students once we start classes. The people that I met all seemed to be nice and laid-back. I mean, one of the reasons that I picked Columbia was because it seemed like a place where people work hard and play hard. The pass/fail, the clubs, and the fact that Dr. Frantz personally picks each one of us goes a long way to making the environment less competitive. I'm not so worried about the competition, I'm just worried that I won't have the chops to keep up with everyone! I guess it's my small school syndrome. Anyway, you can count me in for the SDN study group!

From what I understand, the dental students do have it pretty rough when it comes to competition, but that's because they have letter grades (I think.) and their class rank is very important in choosing who gets to specialize. I think that, although we take many of the same classes, we still have different exams from the dental students, so I don't think the competition will rub off on us. At least I hope not! I'm too worried about med school in general to start stressing about class competition.

Entei,
Thank you for your post! I didn't get to go to second look (for obvious reasons 😉 ) so I didn't get the "class feel" yet. You are right about the dental school, I hadn't realized that things were so different eventhough we take some of the same classes. Also, don't worry too much about coming from a small school, I think medical school will feel a lot like a smaller school, for instance, our whole class of 150 (?) is about half as many people as there used to be in my orgo class! I think that if you made it this far you obviously have potential, add that to the SDN study group and you will have no problems  Joking aside, I think coming from a small school will only help you in medical school; both in terms of being comfortable with getting to know your professors and having an awesome basic science background that you can only truly get from small classes and personal attention!

Hey, thanks for the vote of confidence, IntlMD07. I'm feeling a little more at ease about it lately. 😀

I finally got my housing app during the server downtime! Whooo! Celebrate! :hardy:

Am I the only one who thought that housing application was really lame? I mean, it seems as though once we filled out the first form, then it would be settled...I didn't put any new information on that housing application than I had before.

I took the pictures for the orientation booklet/CUID last week...urrrghh...I hate my picture! Oh well.
