For those of you who have taken COMLEX I, please feel free to post schedules, advice on studying/ how to best prepare, types of questions you saw on the test, something you wish you had done while preparing to improve your score, etc. Also feel free to post your score.

I am taking COMLEX I on June 25th, and I'm getting a bit nervous because I feel disorganized and don't have a solid plan. If I come across good suggestions, I will post them here right away. 😀

Thanks for everyone's help, and I hope we all rock this test!!!:meanie:

I did a few chapters only. I guess I will stick to those especially since I didnt even finishing reading Savarese... but people said its a doable read... so Im hoping i can finish it up in the next 2 days and then review it again also...

are the tests in the back of Savarese worth doing? I heard they are tough

Savarese probably takes about 24 hours total. I had to do it in one sitting because I put it off for too long, so I definitely think spread out over 2 days probably wouldn't be too tough.

Any advice on what I should do these last 5 days?

I have a COMSAE left, and I have been doing questions.

My plan was to just read all of the pharm and anatomy from FA and then hit OMM and MICRO hard last few days?

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Good luck to all.

It still says April 18 as the last day of tests out. This is pathetic. ... #facepalm.

Yeah just ignore me. I'm just bitter.

I have benefited greatly from all of these posts on SDN, and I am happy that I can finally return the favor by making my own. I took only the COMLEX, so I can't compare it to the USMLE. By the sound of it I may never find out my score (8 weeks, really?) but nevertheless, here is how my test went…

Prep:
Gunner training starting halfway through first year, which I did not keep up with nearly well enough (sadly). I love their program, I just didn't have enough/make enough time for it in 2nd year.
First Aid and Pathoma were my primary resources during my 5-week dedicated study period, which I annotated with info from GT
UWorld, Kaplan USMLE Qbank and Kaplan COMLEX Qbank for questions
Savarese, of course, for OMM

I went through FA with a few questions sprinkled in for about 3 weeks, then did questions for the last 2 weeks. I think that was a good decision, because many of the cases on my exam felt familiar because of the number of questions I did (about 3600 by my estimate).

Practice Tests:
NBME 7, prestudy: 190
UWSA2, 3 weeks out: 214
COMSAE C, 3 weeks out: 478
"Free 150" from the USMLE website, 2 weeks out: 75%
NBME 13, 1 week out: 200
COMSAE B, 1 week out: 520
Kaplan Full-Length COMLEX, 4 days out: 70%
Kaplan USMLE Qbank: 70%
Kaplan COMLEX Qbank: 75%
UWorld Qbank: 61%

Impression of the exam: It was an odd test which seemed to cover a strangely small amount of material. I had several identical or nearly-identical questions on the exam, which was somewhat surprising (and annoying). There were some weirdly worded questions, like everyone said. Overall I feel pretty good about my performance. As far as difficulty and question type goes, I felt like the Kaplan full length COMLEX was a pretty good representation of the exam I took today. Naturally everyone's exam will vary. The following is what I remember about the makeup of my exam.

Repro: Probably the heaviest system tested for me. Very very very specific birth control questions, lots of pregnancy situations, many of which I had to draw on information from my classes to answer rather than my review materials.
Endo: Very light on the endo, all of it very basic.
Renal: Light on Renal, with basically no renal phys questions. I'm okay with that. The kidneys are no friends of mine.
Cardio: Some WEIRD EKG's on my exam. Only a couple, but I don't know if I answered them correctly. I expected harder cardio pharm questions, but only got a couple of those. Zero heart murmurs, which is sad, because I studied the hell out of those. I recall a couple pages back someone had a million murmurs though, so at least I was prepared.
Respiratory: Pneumonia. Yeah, that's it.
GI: Fair amount of GI, but not that terribly complicated as I remember it. The hepatobiliary tract was a favorite.
Psych: I was so happy to see lots of psych on my test. Very little on the drugs, though. Some very strange cases here.
Anatomy: Brachial Plexus!!! Also several very strange anatomy questions I would never have gotten anyway. I wish I had studied the plexus more. Anatomy was pretty heavy on my exam.
Neuro: Not as much neuro on my exam. Most of it was fairly straightforward.
Biochem: I felt like I wasted my time studying so much biochem. Maybe 5 questions? Easy, obvious questions.
Biostats: 2 questions. Sadness. At least with math you know for sure if you're right or not.
Pharm: Lots of P450-related questions, NOT a lot of "how do you treat this" questions.
Micro: Some of it was obvious, while some of it left me staring at the screen trying to figure out what they were talking about. More than one obscure question about something that 1) I've never seen while in class or studying and 2) I almost certainly will never see in real life. I expected this, though.
Behavioral: No child development for me, but there were several HMO/PPO questions and weird ethical situations. I think I handled those alright. I don't think I could have done much to prep for this. More common sense than anything.
OMM: Savarese plus the chapman's points posted in this thread (THANK YOU FOR THOSE!) were enough. So glad I didn't have much cranial. Levels were the key here - easy points. The OMM felt very reasonable as far as difficulty. The Savarese questions were much harder and great for preparation.

thanks so much Daedra22 and good luck!!!! it seems that it WILL be a 2 month waiting period, but i'm sure you'll be fine.

I have 12 days before my test, and have not finished FA just yet. should i finish, then do questions, or do them at the same time? the reason i ask is because combank's questions are not so specific for certain systems, and I don't really have another source of questions 🙁 thanks for your input!!! 🙂

What is going on with the score release? Does anyone have an idea besides speculation? Are they going to release a bunch at once?

when did you taker your exam? I am assuming that they grade exams for a certain period (say exams taken april 15 - may 15) because they have to evaluate the quality of the questions and see which ones stay and which ones they take out. So yes, I would think that they will release the results for that period of time all at once. It is an assumption but it just makes sense to me. 🙂

I took it June 1st. What I am trying to say is that the last test date release was April 18th.... that was forever ago. Since the wait has been foreverrrrrrrrrrrrr are they going to release "more" than "usual?"
Why is it taking them forever...

I assume they are acquiring a large enough sample size of how students performed on each of the questions to see what they see is applicable and whats not, or something of that nature. Once, thats all sorted out they can release the scores in bulk. But thats just my assumption.

Any one get hammed on questions for OMT treatment? I thought this was fairly lacking in Green book and was just general principles...

I had some but it would tell you a diagnosis and ask how you treat directly, indirect, etc. money in the bank.

i had about 5 sacral questions that were very strangely worded. the rest of opp was really straightforward...so i guess spend some time thinking about all the ways that sacral questions/diagnoses could be presented...

ugh, I hate those! I had a question the other night on Comquest. It left me thinking... wtf is wrong with this sacrum?!! lol

Since I found this helpful last year I thought I would post what I can remember.

I went through FA about 4 times, some Goljan, and did 90% of uworld and I think about 40% of combank. The only thing combank was good for was to prepare me for vaguely worded questions and a few OMM questions. On the exam OMM were easy points if you know your sympathetic/parasympathetic levels and a few dumb chapman points. Ob-gyn was probably the biggest chunk of my exam. I felt pretty in Ob-gyn because I hit that I really hard in FA and Goljan. The last major chunk I remember were from micro and most didn't seem too bad.
If I had to do it over again I would have finished Uworld and then hit my marked and missed questions and done DIT. Although I think DIT would help mostly for USMLE not as much comlex. I am doing DIT for step 2 right now and its helped my USMLE score about 20 points , but I think its unnessecary for a good score on the comlex. So enough of my jibberish.
Uworld: 62%
Combank: 77%

Comsae A 2 months out 450
Comsae B 2 weeks out 562
Real Deal 561

My USMLE was not so hot.
NBME6: 214
NBME7: 215
NBME12: 219
Real Deal: 211

All of the NBME's were less than one month from my taking the exam.
Good Luck!

Ya, 2 weeks for me... and check out there website.. last test date released was up to April 18th... Its kind of sad.

They'll probably release a whole chunk of them at the same time. Dwelling and complaining about them being slow isn't going to help anything.

Obviously not... but there is nothing wrong with anyone feeling anxious about score releases. Thanks for the input 🙄

hey guys... maybe they'll wait until next week to grade everything and that way my grade will come at the same time as yours

My test is on Friday!! Ahhh! Can't believe it's almost here!

In the meantime, I'm kind of freaking out. My average in COMBANK is in the 70s, with the occasional random block in the 80s. I know you can't really correlate it to your COMLEX score but some anecdotes would sure be nice! 🙂

Also, I caved in and did the COMSAE A today--got a 452 which is 10 points lower than COMSAE B which I took just a week ago. Am I stupid? What's wrong with me??!!! Why does every woman have Giardiasis???!!!!!!!

I keep on hearing about how heavy repro is on people's exams--is what's in FA/pathoma good enough to get most of the questions right?

Thanks!

Hi Guys,
From those who have taken the exam....are there a lot of CT scans/Xrays or Angiograms that we have to be able to interpret and label or something of the sort. I am fairly weak in that aspect of my knowledge, and wanted to know whether I should focus on that.
Also, how is the anatomy in general on the Comlex....would you say FA is enough?
thanks in advance

Here is what I will tell you for future advice: I did exactly what you did, and so did so many other people... "Should I know this, did you get asked that, etc." In the end, people can have anything, and everything (even things you would have never covered even if you studied for another 10 months) is fair game and there is a possibility that it can be on your test. In retrospect... I ended up just studying as much as I could, and of everything that I could, that would "possibly" been asked just to be safe. This is to your benefit because there is no way anyone can tell you what will be on your test.

So to answer your question:
Imaging: Are there a lot? I personally had a few.. Will you have a lot, or even any? Who knows...Its fair game.
Anatomy: FA is not enough generally for the anatomy they ask... Will the questions on your test be covered in FA? maybe.. who knows...

Goodluck

My experience taking COMLEX today... especially with the random psych pharm questions and micro questions (No, I don't care about disease prevention in Africa), and the one "Who pays?" question...

Haha took it today. For me it was OPP it was a bit harder than I expected some portions. The micro was a bit odd at places. Now its the wait game! Wish they would just show if you passed or not haha.

Took the exam today, I thought it was really hard. I didn't know the answer to at least half of them. I was about to void the exam. I had a friend who took it this morning and thought that the exam was horrible too. I think people who took it today are screwed. According to many of my friends, today's exam is an anomaly and I hope they'll be generous with the curve

Everyones exam is random so no two people have the exact same form. Don't stress too much as what is done is done and enjoy any time off you may have.

I don't think that's true. All people on the same day took the same exam. I know two of my friends who took today's exam have the same form. and they all bombed the test.

What was on your test? Can you give us a quick breakdown of the types of questions? What do you think you could have done to do better?

thanks.... I am taking mine next week, so I am getting a bit antsy!!!! :scared:

Chances are if you did well on comsae, you should pass. Mine is an anomaly, passed comsae by a lot though. Just know pharm, micro, neuro, omm, psych, etc.

Not so much. I know 2 other people who took it at different locations and all three of us had a lot of the same questions.

Ya, this was my experience too... I knew a few people who took it the same day as me and most of the questions were the same... there were maybe 1 or 2 we talked about that were different.

Sorry to say... I am glad to hear someone else had a test day that was the same experience as my test day...Everyone else I talked to said that their COMLEX "wasn't that bad...". I was VERY prepared (678 on comsase B) and I felt like I was guessing on every other one... I thought my test was an anomaly, and that all my hard work went to waste. I hope the curve is generous or I am not even hitting a 550 :scared: So just know your not alone....

It is my general understanding, the later you take this exam, the more wtf questions you get. In the end, your score will still end up being about what you deserve thanks to the curve.

It wouldn't surprise me to see scores come out soon for tests through June 15th (the non-wtf tests). Then curve the 2nd half of exams against each other and release those scores in August.

*shrug*
/end speculation

The later the test - the more wtf questions? Is that your personal theory from this year's observations or is that a real trend throughout the years?

Just an observation from reading these threads from the past few years. The remarks about ridiculous questions tends go way up late June and especially in July. Basically don't see anything like it mentioned from the May/Early June takers. I know I'm not the only person to notice this but it's all speculation, who knows.

I know a bunch of competent, above average students who took it yesterday and felt they got annihilated by it.

That's not good 🙁 I'm taking mine next week....

I meant I usually get somewhere btw 220-240 on nbme and close to 600 on comsae. I seriously wanted to punch the people who wrote the questions and the people who put the questions on the exam during the exam yesterday. I was just hoping that I would pass the exam with a 400 and do well on usmle. I felt half of the test is really easy, a lot of repeat questions. Then, the other half is exactly what other people were referring-wtf questions. I felt 40% of the comlex questions yesterday weren't on the FA. That's why I think it's messed up. Luckily, I persevered and did managed to hit the easy questions on the latter half of each sections and finish the exam, rather than void.

Can anyone who has taken COMLEX and used kaplan level I QBank comment on it? Is the QBank worth going through? I did UWORLD 2x to prepare for USMLE and just thinking about looking over micro, green book and repro for COMLEX later this week.

I thought Kaplan was helpful for getting used to the question style. I've heard that combank is better, but not having tried it, I wouldn't know. All I know is that I felt that it was helpful to me. I saw some questions that were very similar to Kaplan q's on exam day.

Wait you have the option to void??? For real???

from all the comments that I have been reading, I feel like voiding my test already :scared:

I have to take mine on Monday and it looks like it won't be pretty🙁

For those that have taken the exam more recently, can you please post a breakdown of questions by categories (repro, cardio, etc), and percentage of each? I want to compare what you guys say to what others have said in the past month to see how the test has changed, especially in content.

Really appreciate your entries 👍

I disagree... I think it's pretty random on who gets the wtf tests. I took mine June 1st , and I had a very bad experience, and if you've read any of my previous posts, and seen my scores, you would see i was very prepared.

hopefully they are gonna curve all those wtf questions and you will get a great score. Maybe it will be pretty similar to when we took organic chem that the average for every exam was 37, and they had to curve that so that the average person would pass  (I'm not kidding btw)
