This is the funniest thread!
I had no idea there were so many desis on this site.

Im going to be applying this cycle (i wish i was in your position 🙁 ) to the east coast schools and Im from maryland.

Yo IndDent, I am a South Indian ready to join D-school this upcoming fall. I am astounded, although not surprised to see so many Indians going into Dentistry. I read your post about going to India this summer. I am also going to be in India this summer for roughly 3 months, volunteering at an organization that promotes education in rural and tribal India. So we should definitely touch base, even if we don't quite know each other. I am truly glad that a sense of altruism and service is so prevalent in others like me. Take care my fellow Desi future professionals!

Desi is a term used for people of south asian coutries, like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc.

I am Patel as well. Only recently I have seen patels going into dentistry. I am the first one in my relatevies here in US of about 500 peopls so it is not that common in my family. Now if you talk about Medicine than there are tons of them. I thought most gujaraties were either Medicine guys or businessman. Another reason you see a lot of gujjus in this profession is that they don't like to work for someone else and take a 9-5 job, I don't for sure. It is in the blood. My uncle just gave up is 125K year job at Boieng to start his own business. Nice to see some gujjus/indians going in to dentistry now.

haha what are you talking about Mustt, when I think of Desi's, I think Indian immediately. That may very well have to do with the fact that I AM indian, but nonetheless. Just throwing it out there. Btw, are you gonna show up to our Pre-dent meetings or wut bro? And I havent seen you in AGES, what gives lol. Maybe I should work out more at the NCRB haha. Take care dost, peace.

Am i the only hyderabadi to enter dental school? Anyone goin to UMDNJ and not live in jerzey i can let u in on some secrets...Newark is one interesting place to live...A kid got shot rite outside my building and later died at UMDNJ...go figure UMDNJ probly has the best clinical in the nation. I also know alot of Desi's who go and will goto UMDNJ so let me know if u want heads up about some of ur class mates. Mustt ill probly be seeing you at Michigan dental.

What's up junglees,
This thread needs some damn mirchi masala...spice it up, BAM! I'm heading to India probably the first week of May...quitting a good paying job in clinical research...to go live like a king for a few months until school starts. So, as for now, I can't complain much...exchange rate is still 50 to 1! But still, I'm no Lakshmi Mittal.

The funny part is, everyday when I walk down the sidewalk, I get a feeling of nostalgia for India. Maybe it's just all the sewer covers that say MADE IN INDIA on them...but really, I do miss it. Things are changing so fast, that in the next 10 years I feel India will have advanced economically (regressed culturally) more so than it did in the last 50.

My dream is to ultimately retire there when I'm done practicing dentistry here. But who knows, with the changing landscape and India trying to cozy up to the Americans, we'll probably lose our sense of culture and tradition...and then India will be no different.

What do yall think?

Masala man,

You use entirely too many food references. Are you hungry? 🙂 It sounds like you'll have a nice time unwinding before the dental school madness begins. Where you born in India? The nostalgia w/which you speak sounds like someone who's spent a significant part of their life there. I'm just curious.

I'm not Indian, haven't been to India since I was, oh I don't know 4 or 5 yrs old. However, I'd be inclined to agree w/your attitude about India's cultural landscape changing in the next 50 yrs.

that's right. Right now I am concentrating all my eeforts on workouts. I have been doing about couple of hours a day now. Main problem is I am taking a Hindi class that is 5-6:30 pm and we always go over with the discussion and thats the reason I miss it but i will try to get to this thursdays Meeting. Congrats on deciding on UMDNJ. You just couldn't pass that price tag, ha.

I am going to india for roughly 3.5 months and I am leaving on May 7th, right after school ends and I clear out my apt. I am mostly going to be satying in a small village(about 900 people) in Gujarat, near by city of Jamnagar, that I grew up in and be wroking in farm with my cousins and uncle. Living the high life for the last time before I start dental school. After this, it will be a while before I will be able to do this. Where exactly you are going?

That's right. india is India because of its culture. Who knows but I know that I would like to retire on a farm or in a village so I may reture in India(unless I make enough money to buy a farm lan in US). India is changing faster than I can even imagine. Many those Pani Puri guys have cell Phones. About 10 years ago phone was a luxury to middle class and I now everything is changing.

That's a very good idea Mustt Mustt. I will be in gujarat during summer also.

These next few months are a great opportunity to do things we've always wanted to do.

First I am going to England (where I grew up) during the World Cup, followed by some backpacking in Europe. Then I'm going to Kenya to visit my grandparents and to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilamanjaro. I've never climbed a mountain before but its something I've always wanted to do.

Finally I'm going to go to India so I can learn more about my culture. I was brought up extremely whitewashed, and my parents never even taught me gujarati properly. Although I understand everything I have trouble speaking and its very embarrasing at my age. My parents do regret not teaching me properly but there's nothing they can do about it now. The good thing is when I learn it I can say that I learned my language and culture by myself.

Admirable sentiment. I wish you luck, in climbing your moutain and learning your language and culture on your own. 🙂

raj, awesome plan man, Kili is 19K which you prolly know, you WON'T make the summit in the summer it if you're not in good cardio shape right now so hit up the gym big time...I speak from experience...the altitude really screws with you. I grew up in E-africa but i'm not in anywhere yet (so technically I shouldn't be posting on this thread)....have a blast tho...and watch out for the mosquitos!!

Why thank you 🙂 I think I should charge a creative thinker's fee (though, it's not all that creative*sigh*)

What do you do? or what do your bosses think you do, while you're here on SDN. I see you found the 3 headed lion..I think Asoka erected those, if my art history memory works correctly

Gujus are connected through 2 degrees of separation.

Fightingspirit, I have a cousin who's going to HARVARD, and his mom cant go a day w/out letting my mom know this. Anyone own a gun? Preferably a Smith & Wesson.

Ouch that has to hurt! Moms have a competitive streak in them as well. But I can see how she's stealing your thunder! G'luck, cause I doubt this my son beat out yours is gonna end any time soon. You've got 4 more yrs of it! 😱

That's gotta suck. I hate how parents get all competitive about their children.

my parents were against dentistry all together...so I had to go through all that crap of having to listen about so and so's children becoming doctors...

In the end, one is ultimately responsible for one's self, and you have to ensure that you do everything in your power to follow your desire as long as it is good. Don't get me wrong, parents always mean well...but sometimes they don't understand the reality of what us 1st generation NRIs go through.

Anyway, sorry for ranting...just felt like it 😉

lol...i understand. my mother's friend has a son who is going to penn undergrad and she just cannot stop tellin us about it. ....she also keeps sayin how proud she is that her son wants to pursue internationl law as oppsed to medicine, which she keeps saying is "overrated"....i cornered the kid one day and asked if he wanted to puruse intenrational law and he said "i wanna pursue it cus it's my passion but mama (mom in arabic) cannot stop pushin me into medicine and she keeps tellin me how superior medicine is to law"....lol...

as far as your cousin, maybe you can ask the mom politely to stop mentioning that and that there is much more to life than harvard. tell her that in the u.s, there is fun, there is dating, there is sports, there is gym....etc...ask her if her son is good at these. i highly doubt that he is...lol..but you never know; maybe pradeep is perfect..

don't worry...the new american-indian generation is gonna stop it. i can already see indian americans becoming dancers, artists, film directors and comedians.....it's changing....bit by bit...brick by brick...

Hey cowsgomoo, I just saw your stats (btw great job). I was just wondering if you got any merit scholarships from any dental schools because I will be applying for Fall 2007 and have similar stats.

Hey Indy,
I'm so sorry to hear that your parents were against dentistry. Do they still feel that way even after you've been accepted to a school? I hope for your sake that they have come around, or that they will soon. This is a grueling process, and it's sad that you had to go through it w/out their support. However, I'm glad that you had it in you to stick it out, since this is what you really want.
You're right parents mean well, however I don't think they always think through how their words affect their children. I doubt they realized how much that dr bit hurt you.
We're all allowed to rant and rave every now and then, so long as it doesn't become an hourly ritual 🙂

All this is like news to me. I have never experienced this or heard about this. This may have lot to do with my parents being farmers in India and we migrated to US few years back. May be it has to do with my parents don't really care what I do in life as long as I earn enough money for food with dignity. Maybe my parents have never engaged in a conversations like this becasue they don't even know what is Harvard? or why some people think medicine is more prestigious than dentistry or may be they don't really give a damn about what other people think of them. In our friends circle and in our family there are no dentists but many many guys in Medicine. However, I have never heard anything like this or heard about it. Not even one person saying WHY NOT MEDICINE? Some of them asked why Dentistry but so far no one compared to Medicine. People in my family don't seem to care about prestige in degrees or schools people are attending but how much time can they spend with their family is more important. Recently my uncle gave up his cardiology practice of 15 years to get into the Hotel business and now he seems to be home everyday. May be this type of competitions amongs moms/families is more common among the people who have been in this country for 20+ years. All I can say is WOW.

Good Luck . and you will need it.

By the way I am gujju as well and will be in a small village near jamangar (Gujarat) for most of the time from may-July.

You're kidding me, you've Never heard about this?? Wow. I'm amazed. Personally, my parents didn't pressure me into going into any one field. They did care that it was one that provided me w/a steady income and that I was happy w/what I choose. However, I know plenty of people who's parents engage in this competition w/their siblings, of my kid is doing this and this, and what's yours upto..and I know that their kids hate this. To my knowledge this happens back home in Pakistan as well, it's not anything new that only those who've been here for a few decades are experiencing. As for why dentistry and not medicine. I haven't gotten that, but I know those who were pursuing dentistry a few yrs ago, got asked that question a lot. Those asking obviously thought that dentistry was below medicine, go figure.
