I agree with Dartos, one of the best classes I've taken this year so far. Dr. Breithaupt does a great job of not making it boring; and he uses Power Point the way it's supposed to be, as a visual aid, not an outline for the lecturer.

I 3rd that notion. Biochemistry here is so well organized, the only other class close to this is pharm I/II here, which are also very well organized.

How about OMM class? How about Histology? What do you think about the quality of instruction in those areas?

Thanks!

since we're on the topic of classes and things...what do you guys think about the SPAL sessions? Do you find them more helpful than you would shadowing in the 1st/2nd year (not sure if you're familiar with AZCOM, but they have a preceptor program during the 1st/2nd year)??

J 👍

I personally think our OMM dept. is awesome! Typically we get the 1st or 2nd highest board scores in OMM. Not trying to start any flame posts here, im sure the other schools are very good. Histology is pretty good, could use tweaking here and there. One of the professors is unpopular becasue he is....lets just say hes a character. But Dr. Canby does such a great job teaching that the course ends up pretty good in the end. I'd say one of the schools weaknesses is behavioral med. I don't know how good it is at other schools, but if this is an interest of yours.........To answer your spal question, I think they are highly beneficial. It's nice to work on your patient skills without the pressure of an attending and a patient breathing down your neck. Dr. Wattleworth is hardcore and expects a lot from you, but I think I actually learned more in physical diagnosis than any other course. Very enjoyable, very well taught. Immuno/micro were topnotch, if you have any more specific questions, just post!

Ummm... (rubs toe into the ground)... what's behavioral medicine? 😳

A mockery of a psych class, imagine all the minute useless details of all your undergraduate psych classes and putting all that information into two (used to be one) tests. Then mixing the correct answer with other possible correct answers; then choose the one Best answer. That's behavioral med. I may be a little bitter because I didn't so well in the class, but I'm just glad I passed it.

SPALS used to be inconvienent, but I agree with dartos. They have really helped lately not only in getting your patient skills and soap note down, but also with putting the classroom facts and info into a patient setting. It will really help in the long run I think.

aren't you taped while you are doing your SPAL thing, so that way you can watch yourself? And what happens when you mess up?

Or if you're like me you can watch your bald spot get bigger overtime.

You don't want to know.....just don't mess up, for the love of God don't mess up....

or you can watch yourself steadily gain the weight that you tell yourself that you aren't...........and if you mess up they have a big shaming ceremony where they throw you out of school and play the imperial march as your classmates throw left over dissected anatomy fat at you.......actually nothing you get points off on your write up, but its really hard to fail them. They are stressful at first then you learn the "system" and do just fine.

Hope I'm not jinxing myself by saying that I'm hoping to join your ranks this week. I'm all wound up thinking I may hear by email tomorrow if it's good news, not sure if they send bad/mediocre news by email...

Aaaahhhh, the wait is killing me...
Cheers,

Histology: was a fine class-probably one of the least important classes unless you are going into pathology

OMM: We are the best. period. The fact that we do well on boards is overshadowed by the fact that clinically you will be better than anyone from any other school-by a longshot. They told me this when I was a 1st/2nd year and I thought it had to be BS-but once I met students from other schools-I found it to be very true.

adding myself to the official DMU Class of 2009!

theOC--Welcome!

thatuvicguy--i'm pullin' for ya'! I think canadians are great, at least the few I have met! plus, they make great beer! always a plus! ; ) Hope to see you in the fall!

J 👍

DOitright--thanks!

I visited the campus last week and all I have to say is that the new building will be sweet! We took a tour of it and it is HUGE inside.

To all DMUers of '09--what apartment complex are you guys going to live in?

Hey the OC,

Did you just hear today (Monday)? I'm dying over here in Vic - haven't heard a peep...

Thanks DOitright! Yep, we've got pretty good beer, but you know, I think American beer gets a bad rap cause of all the piss breweries (read: Coors, Miller etc). There's tons of damn good microbreweries in the Northwest. Actually, come to think of it, had a real nice IPA (ok, 2 IPAs...)at Racoon something or other Brew Pub when I was in Des Moines.

Cheers,
thatuvicguy

thatuvicguy--

i agree about good microbrews here in the midwest! i also went to raccoon river in des moines before my interview and had their sampler platter, great beer! I am currently living in Rochester MN and although they're aren't any good places here, i've enjoyed my close proximity to quite a few decent places!

yeah...I stay away from those power-house american breweries...crappy beer! i don't understand how coors says their beer is frost brewed...how can yeast grow in the frosty temperatures? no yeast = no alcohol!

g'luck!

J

2 pages of canada bashin and beer tribute.....you 09ers are awesome! Seriously though, canada is my favorite state! J/K.

I remember being told about a website with all the housing info on it. I have yet to find this site, so I have no idea where I will be living. My friend who is an '08er lives in the Imperial I want to say. I was not impressed as it was less than Imperial. I will also be looking for a roommate if possible, anyone in a similar situation?

the website is under the student services section on the DMU website. It lists apt names and contacts for you. I think Imperial doesn't look like where I'm gonna be either, but I'm gonna check out Grand Prix and some others near campus and then in West Des Moines, Clive, Urbandale area. I was thinking about doing the roommate thing too, but I have a cat and I don't know how other people feel about pets.

Worst thing about the imperial...? Have to be that strange smell that you can't quite put your finger on. Grand prix isn't bad and the location is hard to beat. 3 grand is a ripoff. It's nice but the rent is sky high. Of those three that I have been in (theres another I've been in, can't remember the name, but I think it was nice enough to put it out of most students budget) I'd go with grand prix. Honestly though I think living right next to school is over rated. You probably (unless youre a super gunner) won't spend as much time at school as you think you will. That being said, it's not that big a deal to live a little farther from campus. Traffic in Des Moines is so light that it won't take you long to get to school, no matter where you live.

thatuvicguy - i actually interviewed in Portland in late November and found out a week later.

about the apartments. i have also heard through some students that 3000 Grand Apts can be a rip off depending on when you get the apt and what's available. a 2 bedroom can go for 650 or even 900 if you get screwed. i've heard really bad news about imperial and how they screw you over and its strange smell. unfortunately i didn't check out grand prix? how much is the rent there and is it close to the school like 3000 Grand? thanks everyone.

FYI, I was able to call DMU after 2 weeks to determine my status.

I've actually been considering getting an apartment close to campus for the first two years to avoid a 1:20 comute to and from the campus. Do you guys know of any that allow you to have dogs?

Anyone else currently doing, or planning a commute that long?

That's actually what I'm thinking too...somewhere close to campus...who wants to drive in the snow anways? The money that you spend repairing your car, buying the permit and filling up gas..you can spend on the relatively more expensive rent.

Are there any studios walking distance to campus?

3000 Grand Apts allows you to have pets I believe. The leasing consultant asked whether I would be living with any pets.

Yaaaayyy!!! Congratulations, T!!!

Yeah, that's true about the Drake neighborhood, it's pretty shaddy. People always getting thier windows busted out of cars (my buddies girlfriend lived in an apartment in that neighborhood, had his busted out Three times in Two weeks!) also there are drugs, crack heads...etc... Too bad, because Drake University is such a nice school, just a bad part of town next to it.

I was thinking that it'd be really nice if DMU updated their website. When you check out some of the stuff..last time they were updated was in 2003 or even 2002. I also think that a website redesign is really necessary...if they could redesign the whole website like the webpage of the "learning innitiative" one would be cool. I don't know how others feel about this, but I think their website looks like anything but a "University"'s webpage....specially one whose campus is equiped with wireless technology. Just a thought.

I ride my motorcycle fairly frequently and was wondering if anyone else was considering riding their motorcycles to school, weather permitting.

(Anyone know where I can find a used Hayabusa with an intact warp core?)

I couldn't agree with you more! For being so technologically advanced (wireless, laptops, pdas, printers next to microwaves etc.) their webpage is pretty dissapointing! But ow well...I rather have all the previously mentioned stuff than a great website! But yes, the website was a let down to say the least!

Ditto!

I was wondering when most people were planning on moving into their apartments? A student I stayed with said some people get them in June/July to make sure they have one but they lived at 3000 Grand so maybe that's why. Any ideas?
thanks!!

I'll be moving to Des Moines towards the end of July sometime, although I'm not sure exactly where I'm going to be living. I am going to try to buy a condo or small house, so we'll see! If all goes well, I won't have to sleep at school! ; )

J 👍

I was thinking July as well. I have been looking at the Apartment Blue Book site, and there a lot of really nice apartments out in West Des Moines. Why does everyone want to be right next to the Uni? Lack of public transport might be a reason, if you don't have a car.

That can be an issue, some people are very anal/worried that they need to be next to school so they never miss class if there's bad weather. Some people don't want to learn des moines streets. Some people are worried they miss a test if they aren't right next to the school and something happens (ie snow, traffic accident, giant asteroid headed towards earth) you get the idea. I don't have a problem with it and I really enjoy west des moines!!

Glad to see some of you guys feel the same about the website. Hopefully DMU can get its act together and put up a website that is more representative of a university's than that of a high school's.
