claire - I'm pretty sure you can put whatever you want on the laptop. Of course, the laptop will be outdated by the time we graduate, but we'll also be poor by that time too, so it work out for me. 🙂

Can anyone answer this: Do we have a mascot? I was watching the info video on the dmu website and saw photos of dmu football teams. well they weren't dmu at the time. but what was their mascot? any suggestions?

Hey Everyone--

I already posted this in the "...super genious..." thread since I figured more of them would be in town, but anybody else going to be in Des Moines this weekend? (Jan. 28/29/30) I'm taking the short trip down and would love to get together with any of you that'll be there for a few drinks!

Let me know if you'll be in town!

I wouldn't even think about leaving out Batman, I would love to go drinking with some of the 07ers, I think quite of few might be cooler than the 08ers.

Dissection manual, Netter's, Stinky lab coat, Micro cards (don't really need, but you never know), possibly an OMM table... heck I don't know what else at the moment. Just don't want you guys spending all your money at the bookstore when you can get it cheaper. They do usually have used items for sale at the bookstore as well, but not alot.

MUNCHKIN

Hiya,
you mentioned once that you were surfing in the 08 thread. i've looked for it and can't find one. the 007s are obvious, those genuises. i just wanna read up on their current year... and thanks

Does the stink come from you, cause then I'd definitely want it! 😍

Coolness as a class seems to skip a generation here at DMU. The 06ers as a general rule were not liked by the 07s. The 08s are ok, but they do virtually no posting. 07 was an awesome year for DMU and 09 is shaping up to be pretty awesome if SDN is any indication. All in fun, don't any 08ers pm me with how much i suck, because you suck, JERK! (Pre-emptive strike).

BTW I would recomend buying a used table, i picked mine up used and saved a bundle, and it's still in great condition. I'm keeping mine but I know that the bookstore always has a few used ones at the beginning of the year. When you get here, buy the book clinical micro made ridiculously simple. I told this to all the 08s i met, and some did some didnt. It's the best book ever. I NEVER went to micro class but I still got a high A on every micro test. How you wonder? Just reading that glorious book. Clinical anatomy made ridiculously simple has a good section on the brachial plexus, which will be your nemesis first semester. I'd pick that one up, even if just for that part. And watch out for grabby hands mcportier, he loves to cruise the incoming class for chicks to reject him. Could you be the next? Just get your slapping hand ready and repeat after me "Get off me you stinking frog!"

Costco is currently selling them in WA for about $180 (with coupon). Is that a good price?

That's good if it's an "OMM" table. I know I got a massage table used for $90. But the OMM tables I believe cost $400 and something, maybe $450. It's totally up to you both work fairly well, though my table isn't firm enough to always get all the HVLA techniques to work.

They give us a laptop and 2 PDAs, but don't provide us with OMM tables???

😕

They have one's that you can use at school, but if you want one you have to buy it yourself.

It's a massage table. It's originally priced at about $250 but has a coupon that brings it down to $189.00. Hmmm... I'm thinking about buying it, but I'm worried that it won't be sturdy enough. Well, COSTCO *does* have the unconditional guarantee thing going...

So, much to my surprise, I recently got accepted to one of my state med schools. As a consequence I've decided to withdraw from DMU. DMU has been nothing short of awesome to me and I'm going to miss being a part of the magic, but a tuition bill about 1/3d that of DMU's is pretty damn enticing. 😳

To anyone on the waitlist, hopefully this will open up a spot for you.

You got to get in where you fit in EvoDevo. I don't know you from Adam, but I promise you that we in the class of 09 will pour-one-out -for-you and say "This is for that guy who said he was going to come here and then didn't."

On another note, I think I might have to take out a loan to cover the other $500 of my seat deposit. YEAH!

AHHHHH!!! Sorry to hear you won't be joining us Evo! But I'm so happy you got into your #1!!! YAY!!!!

Congratulations, Evo! I too was much looking forward to meeting you... I've really enjoyed your posts. But I *completely* understand your decision! Stay in touch, we're all still future colleagues!

Thanks, guys. 🙂 I hope that I run into some of you during residency. 👍

Sorry I missed you when you came to town man...I was tied up. Cliff was spanking me. JK

Actually, I picked up a nasty bug, and I"ve been coughing and sneezing on everyone because of it. You should be glad I didn't show....that, and I have really bad BO.

I was helping a couple of guys lift a 260lb piece of lab equipment and pulled something in my back. I need some OMM.

Things should improve for me markedly in March....

*Hello all DMU 09ers*
I have finally got around to registering so that I can post. I am going to DMU next fall (I was in the first day of interviews if anyone remembers me) and was wondering if anyone has any idea if there are any lakes nearby that are good for fishing. I know that I won't have a lot of free time but I figure there will be at least a few weekends to drop a line. Also, do any of you play the guitar (classical, acoustic, or electric)?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I play classical guitar, so now all we need is an electric guitar and we are set. I am from the suburbs of St. Paul, so I sort of pass by you on my way down.

Great! Well be sure to look me up if you're ever in my neck of the woods! We'll go have a pint or two (and I assume by your screen name, you wouldn't be opposed to that!) 😉

Does anyone know when they are sending out the next deposit information to us, or any information at all? I wish they would put webcams inside the new building, 3 is just not enough for me anymore! 🙂

I know what you're saying about the webcams...I think I posted a while back asking if they had any inside!!!!! I took a trip down to Des Moines two weekends ago and peeked inside, it wasn't near done! I could see the fireplace (it looks cool (no pun intended)) but the floors and pretty much everything else looked like it still needed to be worked on! I'm sure the inside will go pretty fast, and then maybe we can get a cam on the inside! ; )

As far as the next deposit info....I'm not sure they plan and sending anything out! I know it's due sometime in March, but that's it. From what I gather, we pay our deposit and then don't hear a damn thing unti orientation packets come out!!!! I know it's hard to wait...I have days where I really want school to be starting, but then I think....that's going to be the rest of my life....I'm in no rush!!! 😉

Finally, someone else who likes fishing! What are you into? If youre from MN the answer to your question is no, there is no good fishing. just kidding. Iowa is noted for its excellent catfishing, but i never really got into that. I've looked all around and here is what ive come up with. Easter lake in des moines is decent, but REALLY overfished since it is so close to the city, still ive caught a few decent bass there. Supposedly people take some decent walleye and northern from the island in the middle, but alas, i am boatless. DMAC, a community college in ankeny has a pond that they stock with fish. It's so so, but it might be nicer than i think because i only started fishing there late in summer. Not a bad place to get some fish to eat b/c the better lakes down south have higher limits. Best bet for your precious time would be south of indianola. Go to indianola, go through the town (don't speed i have never passed through there without seeing someone pulled over) turn right at the airport sign onto a gravel road, turn left at the first stop sign and right at the sign that says lake aqhaubi. This is a state park and they do a great job of stocking and maintaing. DONT fish here without a license, they check. We mostly catch largemouth here. The limit on this lake is 18" for bass. Haven't seen many that size but weve caught quite a few in the 14-16" range, a few 17s here and there. Lots of fishable shoreline. about two miles further south is lake hooper, just go past aquabi and turn right at the fork. half the size, but fished a lot less. BRING BUG SPRAY! And wear long pants. Early in the year this place is crawling with ticks. I typically catch fewer fish here but they are usually bigger and fatter. I've caught some really nice panfish there while fishing for bass. I'm not exactly an expert fisherman but we do alright down in indianola. It's about a 45 minute ride but worth it. Lake red rock is supposed to be good but a little big for the boatless. Maffit reservoir is supposedly good but i haven't gotten out there, maybe this year. Drop me a line whenever you get into town, we'll take you out fishin. Theres not much action here before about mid april, unless it gets warm early, but late may early june were fantastic last year. Portier dmak and I would typically catch about 75 largemouth in several hours between the three of us. Let us know if youre coming into town!

Hey Beers32 - I'm moving from St. Paul to Des Moines as well. PM me if you'd like to meet up for a beer 😀

Well... I am glad that there are a few people that are into fishing. I have only been Catfishing once.I was pretty young and kind of went into shock because my dad landed the biggest and most ugly fish I have ever seen, but I would definitely give it another try. I am mostly into panfish, bass, and northern. Right now, I am in MN icefishing. How is the icefishing in Iowa? Thanks for all the info on the local lakes. I will definitely let you know when I get into town. I am planning on moving into Des Moines around June. I also have a little fishing boat with a small motor on back. It get's the job done but it doesn't exactly cruise across the lake. It is perfect for small lakes.
Largemouth are probably my favorite to catch, so Iowa doesn't sound all that bad with regards to fishing.
Thanks for the fish talk.

i agree, catfish are weird and scary, especially here where they are gigantic. I just don't have the right gear for them, ten pound test on a midweight rod is great for bass, but a big catfish would tear that apart. I mostly like the bass myself, although i did catch a good amount of crappie early in the year. I love northerns, but haven't done a whole lot with them. Caught a huge one a few years ago in michigan, funny story.... I'll tell you sometime. June is a good month for largemouth here.

Someone asked a while ago where the best places to take your dog are. Greys lake is nice, It's about 2 miles east of school, 2 mile loop around a lake, well maintained. Across the road from that is waterworks park, drive all the way to the back, park by the bridge. There is a long trail that goes through woods, past a creek and by a horse ranch. It's pretty secluded so if your dog is well behaved off leash you can let em run around. Behind the art center is a bunch of non paved trails that are a lot of fun to walk and is also probably the best mountain biking in des moines if youre into that. Up north by ames is a beautiful state park called ledges. It has 100 foot tall sandstone cliffs and tons of trails. Have fun!

How about hiking, you guys? Does Iowa have any good hiking trails/spots. That's something my kids and I really enjoy out here in WA.

Also, we've always wanted to learn to fish, but we've never tried! Maybe we can latch on to some of you guys during one of your trips... and learn something other than Dr. stuff!

🙂

Do any of you do the bike event that goes on out there? What are your opinions on it? How long is it? How does it work?

It depends what you mean by hiking. DM is by no means yellowstone....but there are some fun places to head out for a dayhike, and the farther youre willing to drive.....we are right by minnesota. The ledges that i mentioned previously has a ton of trails, and is beautiful. Lake aquhabi is a very well maintained state park with some very nice trails. Behind the art center are some nice trails. By that lake hooper there are some more backwoods type trails that get a lot less use. Browns woods forest preserve on 63rd is nice. Watch out for the poison ivy around here though! And if you are interested in learning the basics of fishing that would be fun! I took some of the people in my class out quite a few times over break. I would typically fish about 3-5 days a week over the summer. I would have done more but my pregnant wife gets a little irritable when left alone too much. She fishes too but not that much. It only takes a little time and a little money to get started. (warning, corny joke ahead) Get hooked on fishing!

Do any of you do the bike event that goes on out there? What are your opinions on it? How long is it? How does it work?

The bike race is called RAGBRAI (the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Race Across Iowa or something like that - the Des Moines Register is our local 'paper'; thicker than Pravda but about as objective).

Personally, I think it's insanity - the only bike I'm going to try and ride across an entire state is my motorcycle.

http://www.ragbrai.org/

Will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about it.

Oh it is a sad day when we are bumped to the second page. Why aren’t more people posting? Could it be all this talk of fishing? Or could it possibly be all the chatting about the spermicidal bike ride across the great state of Iowa that takes place every summer? I am not sure, but I am discouraged regardless.

Quick question for you Minnesotans: (In my best Minnesotan accent) Ah do ya know how long it takes to get to Des Moines from them there Twin Cities way up there in the frozen north? Do ya? I an wanting to go to the big new IKEA you have up there. Don't ya know. So that I'm not eating dinner on the floor come August.

IKEA is a great place! I live in Rochester and it takes me about 3.5 hours to get to Des Moines..and I'm about and hour and 15 minutes from IKEA...so...math...addition is so tough! 😉 You'd be around 5 hours...give or take! Quite a trip for a furniture store! Good luck!

btw...nice accent...im from california...so the accent here is still funny to me!

On the drive back from my interview I made it from DM to the Twin Cities in 3:15. I was definately speeding though. Lot of fans from U of Iowa were heading up for the Iowa/Minn. game and they drive about 85 mph. Normally it will take you b/w 4 and 4:30 hours.

Have fun at Ikea!
