22 hours on a concrete slab highway would drive anyone insane - that explains a lot about you, jbone! There's a section of Route 684 in NY that is like that. After 5 minutes I want to pull my fingernails out.

Where the heck are you from that it took you that long to get to Iowa? I though only people from like, MA would have that long a drive! 😉 (Actually mapquest says it's 25 hrs, but what's 3 more at that point?!)

SLC, Utah...not that long by car (15 hrs) but with a big ace truck going though the mountains of Wyoming and Utah....it really adds up.

BTW, GO JAZZ BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People are looking for places still....so sad nobody wants to live by Dr. jbone. Sad indeed. 🙁
MAPLE GROVE VILLAS RULE!!!!

We looked at a house in West Des Moines, but it was a little too pricey. We're definitely going to be in Beaverdale. Closer to school and more in line with our budget.

You know Boner, you could at least be honest with me. You don't like me and I understand.

wow...anyone saw our Fall Exam schedule on the portal yet?? At least 1 exam per week and I can't believe it that they have 1 exam on Fri, the Thanksgiving weekend. 🙁 It might be a mistake but I know for sure we will suffer 😀

Man, I'm DEFINITELY signing up for the PA program. :scared:
It may hurt, but it's only 2 years of hurt, and only 2 years of tuition to pay for! :scared:

You'll survive. It really isn't that bad.

Ok, it sucks. j/k.

They prepare you well for the exams. Don't worry, be happy.

I will drive from California to Des Moines in July and that will be the farthest 👍 luckily, we will make it like a roadtrip to visit some national parks.

anyone know if the military will move for HPSP recipient?

Loveable, I haven't seen anything except through internet sources, but it seems pretty helpful. When you're on the DMU website & you go to Student Life / Student Services, there are apartment ad links, plus a Des Moines neighborhood map, that at least gives you an idea of where those apartments are. Nothing's better than hearing it from the people who've been living there, but if you can't go, these resources seem not too terrible.

it might not look hard enough or something, but I can't find the link you referred to ?

I am also renting a budget truck and driving from Vegas. Also, check out the newly revised tuition, those bastards raised it a G, Ill kill em! It's not that much, but still.

Also, are there any 2010ers that want to help unload the truck around june 2ish when I get there. Will result in dinner at a local grubbery.

I was actually quite saddened that the two bones wouldn't be able to cohabitate WDM.

Also, anyone else notice that there is only one week we do not have a test 👍

Yeah, but I'm still wondering if there's quizzes in between exams. Does anyone know if there are quizzes in addition to the listed exams? 😱
& by the way, I visited Maple Grove Villas 2 weeks ago when I was there, & in all honesty, I preferred the NW Urbandale area much more. We ended up getting a condo there & I love the fact that it's quiet yet close to DMU. Maple Grove is too huge a site for me (after having lived in downtown chicago, I swore never to live in HUGE complexes ever again).
Lastly, thanks to all of you for the insight about moving options. I guess my 7 hour drive is nothing compared to what you guys/gals are driving through! Good luck to all of us w/ the moving process. 🙂

Looks like I'll just miss ya. Sorry. Just leave the truck full and when I get back, I'll unload it for you. I'm heading home to the mountains for some camping, golf, Jazz finals games, and waterskiing. Screw the research. I'm burned out.

Anyway folks, don't worry about the test sched. and the tuition hike. The hike was actually a lot lower than other schools from what I've read on SDN. Enjoy your summer. Believe me, if I can make it through first year, ya'll are golden!

Thanks, Jbone! A little encouragement can never hurt 👍 Now good luck w/ exams & enjoy your vacation 🙂

I don't have quite as bit of a problem with large complexes, but I am just elated at the fact that I can go anywhere without having to think about whether it is rush hour, if parking will be available, if gas prices have broken the $3.70 mark, or to not forget my I-pass if I take public transportation.....I will however miss the sports talk radio, which I get a chance to listen to when I am in traffic for 2 hours

We only had quizzes in OMM. There were 5/ semester and were not announced. But, there is a new head of OMM coming for next year, so I don't know if that will change.
Like, Jbone said, the tests are not that bad. Your're stressed at first, but you get use to it fast. However, OMM practicals and SPALS still scare me.

I definitely agree. My OMM practical is tomorrow afternoon, and I'm worried I'll just flat out make an ass of myself.

This may sound like a dumb question, please forgive me...but are all exams multiple choice (this probably has been asked before, maybe even my me...lol), even the OMM practicals. I dont care how exams are administered but it would be good to know.

All written tests & quizzes = Multiple Choice
SPALs and practicals = on your own (*SPALs have patient write-ups or SOAP notes which must be completed after the encounter, i.e. "Patient presents with headache and nausea after sex...")

hey, i had a question for all of you...if you were in this situation...you have been accepted to dmu already but sitting on a waitlist...do you start looking for housing anyway? what about roommates?

i am sooooo confused...and not ready for all of this! 😕

If you are accepted to DMU already, I would start looking for housing and at least have something lined up (i.e. have a lease ready to sign should you decide to matriculate at DMU). I can tell you from experience, the worst housing mistake you can make is rushing to find a place and settling for a poophole of an apartment. Investigate your options, find a couple of desireable places and keep up to date with availability should you decide to move. I guess the same could be said about your waitlist option, but I would say if by early to mid July you haven't heard from your waitlist school just make life and you move easier by going to DMU (same would apply for any other school).

Am I the only one here still procrastinating on all the pre-reqs before classes (ie. physical, immunization, final trancripts, background check...etc). I got the financial aid taken care of but I have been busy with other things that the rest of the stuff have only been on the back of mind, maybe I am waiting for an email saying we need you to this!(lol)....I know that I need to do the background check by june so I will get that out of the way first...anyway, hopefully I am not way behind on anything.

ROFL...Jessica Sleeth our Student Health Services nurse is going to be all over you, UIC Killa. I remember getting an asisine amount of emails from her when I was trying to get all that stuff taken care of b/c my immunizations were screwy. You know how you have to have titers drawn? I got chickenpox as a kid, but evidently didn't develop varicella immunity so I had to get a booster for that. MMR titer was not sufficient = another booster. Hep. B Surface Ab was present so that was good.

Ah...good times.

I'm def with you on the procrastination...however, I haven't even filled out the loan stuff except for fafsa. Every week I keep telling myself this is going to be the week! Well its been two months now...and guess what i think this is going to be the week...at least I hope so :scared:

Don't worry - UIC, I haven't done a thing either.
Life has been suspended for the last month while my mom has been in the ICU after an allergic reaction to some contrast dye. No - she hasn't left the ICU yet. The idea of deciding where I'm going, where I'm living, let alone things like health forms and background checks - off my screen lately!!!
The only question I've managed to answer about schools this month is - can I defer if I have to? 😳

Hi, orthodoc. I definitely think you're doing the right thing in supporting your mom right now. That's your top priority & I truly hope things get better soon! Our thoughts are w/ you 🙂

Thanks so much! So much for relaxing before school starts!! 🙁

One can only do so much. just TRY to relax if you can (trust me, I don't practice everything I preach). In theory, though, it would be wonderful if we could really relax and enjoy our time before med school, wouldn't it? I simply keep telling myself I'll be able to relax eventually (just not anytime soon).😱

It's still another 3 months before school starts. Don't worry much but relax and take care of your mom. I hope she's doing better. 😍

sorry I keep asking questions, but can you guys tell me exactly how OMM practicals are administered...do we have to perform the procedures on a fellow student or to the instructor? are these practicals typically easy, as compared to other exams and practicals? I guess I am just a little apprehensive about OMM because it's something that I have not seen in undergrad, as oppose to biochem and cell bio..ect. Thanks for the help😀

You are partnered with another student and do the actual procedures on each other in front of the teacher/fellows. And yes, they are typically easy because there are no surprises, you know exactly what they are going to ask. The class average is usually in the high 90's.

Here are some equipment questions for the 2010ers:

What equipment will we need? Diagnostic set, stethoscope, OMM table, etc..?

Is it possible for my wife and I to share some of this equipment, like a diagnostic set?

What quality/brands of equipment did you buy?

We're thinking ahead and doing some budget calculations. Plus, our neighbor, who I shadowed, is planning on throwing us a going away party before we leave, and some people want to know what we'll need.

One more addition to the DMU class of 2011 here! I interviewed on April 20th, was accepted a week and a half later (liked the letter from Dr. M!), and just sent in my huge deposit today. ($1000! yikes!) 😀

From reading this thread, it sounds like I have a lot to catch up on. Any advice on what to tackle first? (I'll be driving from Seattle, WA... anyone else feel like U-Haul is a huge ripoff?)

I would say not to buy your equipment until you get to school. SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Association) gets everything together & you get a pretty darn good price for it that is much cheaper than buying everything separately. Sharing a diagnostic set is probably not going to be a good idea if you both have the same last name & are in the same class b/c your SPALs are organized by last name.

If someone wanted to buy stethoscopes, I would recommend the Littmann Cardiology III. Very nice scope.

I have a portable OMM table w/ bag that I may be willing to sell someone.

Congratulations!!! & Yes, Uhaul is a ripoff. Check Budget Truck rental because you can get a better price plus 15% off if you reserve online. Secondly, check the services like UPack where you get a pod or freight of a truck, pack all your stuff, & they do the driving & fueling. I'm going to be using the Upack option just to be safe & because it's only a few hundred $ more than getting a Uhaul (if you factor in the fuel cost). So, my advice, shop around & get something reserved as soon as you know what date you're moving because it's that time of year when moving increases.
Oh well, good luck & congrats again. See you in a few months!🙂

Not always. Uhaul (for me) was substantially cheaper. I guess it depends on you location and drop-off city. Best of luck to you and congrats on you acceptance. Hell week is about to begin....I hope I survive.

I've heard that the portable OMM tables they used to get were pretty pricey, so I was scoping some massage/PT tables with 1.5" thick high density foam for ~$200. From reading some previous posts on the subject, seems like this is the most cost effective way to go.
As far as diagnostic kits go, we were thinking of sharing a pocket set. My wife hyphenated her name, so sharing for SPAL won't be an issue since she'll be at the beginning of the alphabet and I'll be at the end.
Are the SOMA prices better than allheart.com? Seems like they have great prices on scopes and diagnostic kits.

can any MS I/II please tell me how safe is it to bike around campus or the area? Is it raining alot during summer? and how do I log in to the BB ( user name/pw ???)

thank you very much🙂

I realize I'm a bit late, but I wanted to say hello. I'll be headed to Des Moines at the beginning of August, and I'm already counting the days. I'm really glad I chose DMU -- I keep reminding myself of this as I slog through the paperwork :~)

It's a safe neighborhood. My wife rides her bikes & goes for walks by herself when I can't go. Go for a drive sometime down behind the school & on the west side. It's referred to as the 'million dollar' area. There are tons of huge homes.

The only thing I will say about the area is that there is only one apartment that I worry about & it is the one on the corner of 35th & Grand (Grand Stratford). The cops are there frequently, but they keep to themselves & sometimes provide good entertainment for Imperial residents w/ the crazy stuff that people yell.

Raining...Well, it does rain, but it's usually fairly dry for the most part. I guess I don't know what's considered a lot. It's not Seattle.

Hello again everyone! It's been awhile since my last post. I'm moving down to Des Moines (my fiance and I actually bought a house in the Beaverdale area) from WI in July sometime. If anyone will be in the area, I'd love to meet some of my future classmates! I'm bringing my dog down (yellow lab), so if any of you have a dog, we could always meet up for a "doggy play date." 🙂

Hi, countrygal. Where in WI are you guys moving from? Just curious since I'm moving from WI as well 🙂

I'm with you Kenosha. I was just accepted and started mucking through the paperwork myself. Who knew there would be so much? :d

It may rain in Seattle, but the rain here is NOTHING like the rain you see in the Midwest. As a Seattlite, I live life perpetually damp. Basically, it rains a lot, but we call it "spitter rain" or "drizzle" for a reason. When it rains in IA or MN, though, watch out! You're going to get soaked.

PS- I don't even own an umbrella. 😉

what kind of paperwork are you guyz talking about?? i don't remember i have to do that many 🙂

tennisgal, are you playing tennis? i'm learning and would like to have someone to play with during school year for stress reliever 😀

Absolutely! I would LOVE to play! I'm always on the lookout for new tennis partners. 😀 Do you know of any indoor courts in Des Moines?

I have had a lot of financial aid, health info, etc. to fill out. (I'm trying to get everything done before I lose my health insurance in June.) I don't think it would be so bad if I could spread it out over a period of a couple of months. It's just overwhelming trying to get it all done in such a short period of time.

lol. paperwork? consent forms and waivers; health insurance; health information, vaccinations and blood tests that all have a form that need to be signed; financial aid -- and mine was randomly selected for verification; background checks.... i feel like i'm missing something. *grins* most of it isn't difficult, it's just a pain to sit down and do.

also -- huzzah for wisconsinites! i'm betting you can guess my hometown... :~) countrygal, my dog will be staying in wi; can i just come over and play with yours?

Go K-Town!!!!!!!!!! I figured you were from here when I saw the username. I went to the good old University of WI- Parkside in kenosha. Gotta love it there 👍

Playing tennis sounds like so much fun! I haven't done that since I played for my high school team. We will have to find a place and get a group together.

Are there any outdoor public courts close to campus?
