Does anyone know if DMU offers a roomate match? Or is it basically you just post something up on the portal? Hey Jbone, did you get my last pm?

Jamers,

I truly feel sorry for you now that you are going to try to pass Creed off as a credible rock band 👎 . I miss the good 'ol days of growing up listening to the real alternative rock of Pearl Jam & Nirvana. Mike McCready on guitar...doesn't get much better & probably most the reason they were voted greatest American rock band of ALL TIME in 2005. Seattle grunge bands is where it's at. There's ton of stuff from the early 90's that never made it mainstream that is probably so freaking awesome.

I wish Eric Clapton would come out w/ something new too. That guy can really play. Reminiscing about the good 'ol days is so much more fun than Repro or Boards 👎 👎

Pearl Jam, STP, Nivana, Oasis, Live, Bush......This is true rock. BTW does anyone play guitar, drums etc....I would love to jam with the 2 minutes of free time I'll have in med school. Clapton did release something new. Its a collaboration titled, "The Road to Escondito" or something. It just came out.

They were one of the best selling bands of all time in the 90's, over 20 million records sold with only a few albums recorded; that is a pretty great a achievment. But, since this can go on all day:
enjoy this mad tv skit.

Hey I interviewed at DMU on 1/19 and was accepted today. I think this is defnitely where I'll end up. If any current students read this, what do students do in Des Moines to have fun or blow off steam?

First of all, congratulations...hope you decide to come here.

Well, intramurals are pretty sweet here, I'm sure you saw the fitness center on your interview. Great way to blow off steam, or just get a good workout. A big group of us first years went on a ski trip to Colorado a few weeks ago, which at least some of us will be doing again next year.

Going out in Des Moines is what you make of it...they have a sweet Oktoberfest at an awesome German bar downtown, but most other places are only cool if you bring a crowd. There are some decent pubs with good specials close to campus, and one of them even has a shuffleboard table.

You'd have to travel for real "outdoors" stuff, if that's what you like. There are places to camp here in Iowa though, some of us hit one up this fall. Just a fun way to spend a weekend night.

Well, that's mostly what I do here when I'm not reading something related to school.

Or I throw snowballs at Jamers's apartment.

I'll admit, it's true, I didn't think he had the reach but, I was damn wrong. When the hell did you start coming on SDN?!?!

Anyways, as with any city, Des Moines is what you make of it. I personally like to go to the gym or get in on some sports. This weekend we are playing dodgeball (TEAM DURA MATER)!!

Thanks for the responses guys. Ironically today I got invited for an interview at ATSU the day after I get accepted at DMU. They told me they invited me for an interview in early december but sent the invite to the wrong email address (what?!). Anyways I feel that DMU is the superior school and probably won't interview at ATSU at all. The only place I was exposed to as far as night life goes in Des Moines was Zimm's restaurant and bar near campus. Seemed OK, there was a group of students having a pretty good time in there.

If you're at all concerned with night life/having fun then don't interview at ATSU. Great school, boring town that is about 1/10 the size of Des Moines (if that).

There have been a couple of "DMU or KCOM" threads that you may want to search for - you can read up on the pros and cons of each school to help you make the decision...

Lucky dog! Only place I was exposed to as far as night life was the all-night Walmart and the taxi service that brought me back & forth to my hotel room!

If I end up at Des Moines next year I wouldn't mind starting up some ultimate frisbee, golf, and for the extreme athletes beer pong (or Beirut, whatever you want to call it)!

We actually got some ultimate frisbee going a few times it was fun times!! Don't forget about intermurels (I belive I killed the spelling on that); flag football was great.

Virus Zapper, based on what I've heard free time is at a premium. However, if it can be pulled off a beer pong tourney would be excellent.

One more quick question. I didn't want to ask this in my interview to avoid looking ridiculous, but how reasonable is it to assume I could go to med school and take care of a dog as well? I really want to buy a dog but don't want to completely neglect it due to always studying. My girlfriend is moving down with me so that will help. Also, are there ANY nice places near campus that accept small dogs?

I think if you play your cards right friday and saturday nights can be free. Except the weekend before an exam. At least this is what my friends who are already in med school tell me. UPenn, MSUCOM, Touro, and others. They are obviously extremely efficient at studying and manage their time well during the week.

It's kinda funny but I am in the exact same situation you are in...my gf is moving with me to Des Moines and we were planning on getting a dog as well...she promised to look after the dog if I start to neglect the pet because of studying...lol...anyway...the only problem now is that she wants one of those small little "cute" dogs (like the size of a cat) but I want to get a bigger dog that can at least bark loud enough to scare a burglar...anyway...good luck with everything👍

A dog is reasonable. I have had a dog since my senior year of undergrad and my best words of advice are to get a dog that is a "smart" breed and spend a lot of time with it in the initial months. Reason I say this is because they will train well; teach them what's off limits and where they can hang out when you are in class all day, etc... You can focus on studying rather than picking up dog poo, rooted-through trash, chewed up clothes, etc... with a well trained dog. I have a collie/husky mix I adopted from the humane society and he's awesome.

Just keep in mind that dogs are very, very family oriented & they need consistency. If you're not going to be home much, or you will on short notice want to get home extra late, or not at all - either you're gonna have a really unhappy dog (you meanie!) or you need to have a plan to make sure it gets some attention, you know?
Plus you can't just go away for the weekend without plans for it being cared for...
Then you get into internship & residency, and you've got a 4 year old dog at home - when you will NEVER be around.

All I am saying is, please consider the commitment it needs, and if you're willing to make it. If you see the dog for a half hour in the morning, then you see it for a couple of hours at night - and the rest of the time it's alone - if it never knows consistently when it's going to get fed, get walked, get attention - is that really fair to doggie?

Sorry guys - I used to be a dog walker & I see a lot of people that probably shouldn't have gotten a dog because they didn't really think about what a dog needs ahead of time. So I just had to say it - but do what you want of course! - I'm done. Don't take offense, I just have a soft spot for the little guys.

Good points Ortho, and that's what I was getting at. I was just wondering if I lived across the street (or very close to) campus if a dog was feasible. My girlfriend will obviously be home a lot more than I will also.

Hey can any current DMU students fill me in a little bit as to how first year is? How long are you typically in class each day? How long can you expect to study on avg each night (I realize everyone is different)? Any time free on the weekends?

People always talk about how how much time dogs require, but when in any person's life (other than when they're retired and 70) is there enough time to spend all damn day with a dog. Any well trained dog will adjust to their owner's schedule and make the most of the time they have together. A dog that is properly trained and socialized can adjust as well as any human out there.

Expect on average 4 hours of classes (8-12) each day and an afternoon lab 2-4 times a week. You'll average about 6 hours of classes a day in other words. How long you study all depends on your needs. Just think of it as a 60 hour work week job roughly. It's all very manageable, but of course there will be nights (like tomorrow night for me) where you feel like there is never enough time to get it all done.

Good luck!

Read above for class time, but a lot of people don't go to every class. Studying is very different for everyone. I would say that I pretty much study until about 11 at night most nights, which might be more than normal, but then I flow home to San Diego to visit my girlfriend about every 2 weeks, or she comes here. During that time I don't even touch a book for the 2-3 days that I'm with her. Crazy, I know, but that's just it, you still have time to do what you want to do as long as you are committed. And I'm no genios, but doing fine in my classes with that schedule. Sometimes it's nice to just not think about school, it helps me not get burned out.

Thanks It'sElectric and FS-Pro, that helps and gives me some help of having a social life. Also good points on the dog Electric.

I think they said it best with: everyone has his/her own style. I am one of those people who rarely go to class. What I do is listen to the MP3's at a faster speed, take notes on it and then I am done. I try to know it as best I can when I read it the first time and then review at the end of the week. The biggest thing is NOT to get behind because you are studying for something else. Don't listen to people that say it is too much and you will never have time. They are normally just trying to scare you off. You will have free time. Try to use that time to do SOMETHING besides studying. I go to the gym or to the bar normally. I like FS-Pro have the gf that lives away so I fly out to see her (like at the end of this week for example). It will take a you a few months but you will develop your own style. Having a dog won't kill it and, who knows, you may be like me and never go to class; having a furry friend at that point will help. I wish I had a furry friend 🙁

Thanks, current DMUers for your awesome responses. It helps to get a rough idea of how everyone does it & still manages to have a life outside of school- despite the different approaches to school. See you guys next fall 🙂

What's up with that email for the March 7th thing?
It looks like it's interview day again, minus the interview - no?

Yes, I think it is basically for people (like yourself) who are sitting on the fence and can't make up their minds about DMU or not. We're still waiting Ortho.............................................

For anyone that just got excited about taking every other weekend off, FS-Pro may actually be border line "genios", which is why he "flows" home and still crushes tests.(no spelling tests in med school) For the rest of us, work hard and late and you won't have to study during the superbowl.

Jbone failed to mention that he gets 100's on every test. Well, except for that behav. medicine test. So, he doesn't know what stage his crack addicted, sexually abused on wellfare, just ran 14 blocks to escape the cops...patient is in. But, he gets by...he gets by.

I love the sense of humor everyone has at DMU. It refelects on the school well. Can't wait till fall.

Me too - me too... I hate being so indecisive! It's a sad thing...

So this is a day like - "we're going to convince you to come here." Like when my friend took me to a giant est meeting. Or the forum - or whatever they now call themselves. 😱 I'll be ready this time!! 😀

Wait a minute - I paid my deposit! How do THEY know I'm on the fence??!!

Did you pay the FULL $1000 deposit or just the first $250/$500?

(I think my numbers are correct...)

It's 500/250/250. Paid the first one. $250 coming up due March 1st....
Think that gave me away?

Congrats...you made a good decision. Enjoy your summer!

Yup. You aren't "fully on-board" yet... so they want to woo you enough to get you on-board. In other words, they'll keep doing this because they want to make sure they'll get that $32k from you for the next 4 years!

...and of course they want you to come here because they think you're qualified/nice/smart and will contribute positively to the school, etc. (all that feel-good stuff 🙂 )

Nope, they just want your money. Speaking of money, I need some, anyone wanna buy a slightly used 23 year old male???? My daddy, Soundman, won't give my allowence....weird.....

why are you still on the fence!! UMDNNDNDNDNDJJJJ (that is a huge name) isn't still trying to seduce you, are they? I know, first they are nice and you let them in and BAM* next thing you know your daugther is knocked up, there is a huge phone bill and they sold your organs.

Alright, I need to catch my flight home now, everyone have fun!!

Dj: I love you 😍 😍

Awwww thanks Jamers 😉 I'm not ready to commit yet though, so I'll just say that I "like you very much"-

Jamers is reason enough to come to DMU. It's a no-brainer Ortho-

Now we come to the crux of the matter: Jamers himself is planning to move to the east coast. Thus I will not get my chance to sing show tunes with him even if I DO choose DMU!!

That photo of Dr M on the invitation was definitely tempting....

Seriously, I liked DMU way more than UMDNJ (though I liked UMDNJ), but see every time I keep thinking, "OK, it's DMU!" that $10k per year cheaper and only 1 hr from home thing UMDNJ has keeps tugging at me....

Don't listen to FS-Pro.... hes a freakin "genios" with his photographic memory and all.... the rest of us people who have to wear helmets and saftey shoes (thats for you Bone Sawz) so we don't hurt our selves have to study quite a bit to just keep our heads above water....... tho I have to say it is quite manageable. I have a little girl and a wife and I study at home so I see them a lot during the day. 😴

😕

I' am staying in Iowa but I do want to go back East for Internship/residency if that is what you meant. So, you will have a full year of seducing me I mean singing to me. Do me, I am desperate...I mean....:scared:

Leave people with photographic memories alone! We are all geniousisusususs at DMU (we even spell it the right way, it has a lot more "s" than people think). Anyways, my momma said I needed my plastic diapers, safety helmet, rubber shoes and gloves before I went out. Otherwise, people named Jbone would try to touch me in my bathing suit area and that wasn't allowed... I'M TELLING!!

Oh now THAT changes everything!
I thought you said something about interviewing somewhere in a place closer to your g/f. You know - that place in PA? Have you gone back & deleted all those posts already?? Is there no record of these posts to back me up on this? Huh? HUH?!

And to answer your earlier question - no, UMDNJ stopped trying to seduce me when they got their measly $165 deposit. Now THAT'S a deposit amount other DO schools should consider!

I've kinda been on a different planet lately...did I miss the 2nd deposit deadline?? lol whoops if i did

word?? 😎

It is March 1st!
Got the new student portal stuff in the mail today, too.

Does anyone know why in Year 3 there are only 40 weeks accounted for, and in Year 4 there are only 36 weeks? What's up with that? Last time I checked, there's 52 weeks in a year...

Because you get vacation electives i believe. Also, if you add up the total weeks of rotations that you have to take, I don't think it will add up to 52 weeks. You need time in between roations for various reasons, such as moving to another state if that is what you want to do.

Yah, in Year 3 it adds up to 40 weeks. 12 weeks for vacation &/or moving? That's a lot of moving - yikes!

Holy crap Ortho, you are a type C personality? right?
I freakin go to DMU and I haven't even looked that deep into the rotation time periods. I'm pretty sure we have a lot of elective rotations especially in the 4th year. Maybe a 2nd or 3rd year can clarify this? You might be looking at the REQUIRED rotations we need to do. That is what's cool about DMU, you have a lot of freedom to "focus" your rotations in a particular area. I believe that is what the "extra" time is for. Can I get a witness?

BTW, Ortho it's a freakin Saturday night. What are you doing home posting about DMU? No life and posting on SDN on a Saturday night is reserved for medical students only. LOL!! I seriously have to meet you. 😉
