Didn't people get that email invite to the March 7th thingy? Maybe not the exact same thing, but well it would serve a similar purpose...

I just received the email acceptance last week, so I'm still waiting for my snail mail letter and additional info. What's the March 7th thingy? 😉

BTW ORTHO have you officially made a decision yet???

I may actually never decide. It's so tough to choose, that may just go to PA school instead. 😳

Seriously, I decided not to post any more questions about either school or even think about it this week....

you should just go to both, DO IT!! You need to book your flights in advance to get a really good price. My flights average about 250 if I book them in advance (like 2-3 months) and 350 if I don't; I paid 450 for my flight at Christmas.

I gotta put on my crazy brain to read your posts sometimes!! 😉
Go to both, what? Schools? Flights, what? 😕 Yes, that would take many flights.
If you're talking about the 2nd visit thingys, I couldn't get a ticket to DSM for the 7th of March - today they are priced at a lovely $525 RT... That's the second half of my deposit fee, so forget that!

Yes, I use Jamey language.

I meant go to both schools, it would be fun and impossible but, fun.

Flights back to the east are tricky and you NEED to book them months in advance to get a good deal. I actually urge everyone, right now, no matter where you are going, for the xmas trip to book them as soon as you figure out your schedules. I dropped nearly 500 bones when all was said and done and that was after booking my trip THREE months in advance.

If they don't have a weekend like that we could always organize a DMU-SDN c/o 2011 weekend.

Thats what I'm talking about. I say most of that weekend be spent at the brew house downtown, I forget the name.

If anyone is at all serious about this, I propose a late May/early June weekend. This puts us in a good position to seriously look at housing prospects and gives everyone enough time to book reasonably priced flights. If you're really interested, throw some dates out there and we can work something out. VZ, you can be social chair for this event if you remember the brew house name 😀 . 2010ers welcome too.

You should all go to Hessen House and do a boot.

Was listening to NPR on the way back from work. Apparently you 2010ers are in for quite the blizzard. Heard an interview with a grocer in Waukee who said people are freaking out because of the impending weather. Hooray for Iowa winters !

Everyone over in UMDNJ is bickering about how better MCAT scores make for better classmates. I think I might have started it by disagreeing, but anyway, it's no fun over there. I'm staying here where people plan parties and fun stuff....even if I can't go! 😎

You still deciding between DMU and UMDNJ? Did you put down the second deposit for DMU?

How would high MCAT make better classmates? It's bad enough you have the people that never shut up about their grades already. Leave it to Jersey 😀

Well I almost didn't put down the 2nd deposit for DMU, after thinking long & hard about whether I like the 4th year situation or not... but yes, I did send it in. I don't really have to "decide" about UMDNJ - the deposit is only $185, which I paid long ago. As far as they know, I'm going there. It's whether or not I keep paying DMU that I have to keep deciding. Some day, like when classes start, I will finally make my mind up... or go to a nice, short 2 year perfusionist program instead....😎

I think the argument was that the person would rather be surrounded by 'more intelligent' classmates, by going to the school that accepts a higher average for MCAT and GPA. Some people really just will never let go of these ideas.

So if they want to be around students with high MCAT scores...why are they going to UMDNJ??

I kid..........😉
It was just toooooooooo easy! :meanie:

Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Des Moines, Iowa) Average MCAT: 8.7, 8.3, O, 8.2 total= 25.2

University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey UMDNJ - School of Osteopathic Medicine (Strattford, NJ) MCAT: 9.24, 9.00, Q, 8.54 total= 26.78

not much of a difference there, but I guess the 1.5 points makes us stupiddd...haha actually, the class of 2010 at DMU: AVERAGE CUM GPA: 3.64, SCIENCE: 3.59 AND MCAT: 25.93

before anyone asks: http://www.kcom.edu/faculty/chamberlain/ranmcat.htm

and the class of 2010 stats I got because I am special and I do interviews now :-D.

I hear your class has even higher stats than ours (we are the class with the highest stats apparently).

Well, this is what I was trying to say. I mean, so, someone guessed right on 1 question and someone guessed wrong on 1 question, bumping them down a scaled point on the MCAT. So this is the difference between genius and dummy?? And it somehow means being a part of the class that got a few points higher on the test more intellectually stimulating? Challenging? WHAT? 😕 I just don't get how that logic works for some people. But okay.... whatever.

Somehow I suspect medical school is going to be pretty darn challenging and most people in there are gonna be pretty bright. Strange, obviously, but bright. HA HA. 😀

yes, yes. There is a popular saying that, most people that come to medical school are used to being at the top of their classes but, when they get here and look around, they realize that EVERYONE was in the top of their class.

*****NERD ALERT*****

Is anyone else upset at the fact that our laptops will most likely have Vista installed on them? Personally, I'm an Apple guy and would love to see DMU dole out new Macbooks to incoming students. The new Macbooks can run Windows natively, so people who are all about Microsoft will be happy. On the other hand, Apple lovers could have the awesomeness of OS X at their disposal (OS X Leopard is gonna be awesome), but honestly, I would rather have an XP machine than a Vista. I'm sure the fate of our laptops has already been decided, but a man can dream.

I'm with ya brother!!! However I'm biased since I'm typing this on a Macbook right now 😀 But with this being my first Mac I've been totally won over. 😍 It should be an interesting 1st year being Microsoft's guinea pigs with Vista...it just seems like they always rush products to market without getting the bugs worked out first, and as soon as they have something working moderately well they scrap it and bring out something new 😡

About the get together in May/June. If its mid June I'd be able to make it. Right now I'm living in TX, but I plan on moving to Iowa early/mid June.

Black macbook and iMac user right here. However I do have to say that I just built a killer gaming PC which is running Vista Ultimate right now and its definitely better than XP (that's not saying much though). Yes, leopard will rock all our worlds especially with time machine and other cool features. I guess we could always hold out that Steve Jobs will open OS X so it can be installed on PC too (this rumor has been flying forever) but I think its just wishful thinking.

Hey everyone-
I will be attending DMU this fall, and my fiance and I are looking to buy a condo/townhouse, but I was wondering if this was a good idea since I will most likely be moving around for my rotations during 3rd and 4th year. Is it possible to stay in the Des Moines area all 4 years or is this very unlikely? I probably should have asked more questions during the interview day, but I was too nervous! And so now I have lots of questions😛 If anyone knows anything about this please let me know! Thanks😉

I bought a house with my wife. I figure If I can plan most of my 3rd year rotations in Des Moines i'll be ok, but for 4th year electives I'll probably be going from different hospitals all over the country so it wouldn't really matter where I'm living because I couldn't drag her to all those places anyway.

From what I've been able to figure out (which isn't much, in general...but that's another story 😕 ) there's about a 50-50 chance of staying in Des Moines for 3rd year. KrazyKritter posted some great info on year 3 & 4 somewhere I can't seem to find.....Anyway, even if you manage to stay in Des Moines for year 3, a few of the 4th year students have basically described a year that involves moving every 4 weeks or so, all over the country, and at times living out of their car for year 4.

So does it make sense to buy when you've got those odds of being in Des Moines for 4 years? I don't know - everyone has to decide what works for them.

What a Great post, orthodoc. It's so neat& organized & easy to follow- definitely worth the wait. So, you've decided on DMU, I hope. I 've been trying to keep track of the issues concerning the DMU class of 2011 & saw you were deciding between 2 schools for a while. Hope to see you in Aug.!🙂

Whoops. I forgot to say thanks. Or you're welcome. Or something....anyway I was glad to finally figure out how to post that list.
Maybe I'll see ya this Aug.

Hey - I made it through a week without asking any more questions!
Aren't you all proud? Well, er, ummm... you WOULD be proud, if you had noticed!

Anyone know the model of the gateways we'll be getting, is it the same as last years?

Is everyone in this class going to be married? 😱

I checked out the Gateway site and there's only 2 models of tablet available, both basically the same. The difference is the processor. So I'm guessing its one of those, but who knows?

BTW, I'm in the ranks of the single, however I know what you mean there has been a lot of talk about significant others and kids on this board. I'm guessing if everyones married there will just be less competion when we head to the bars!!

Well, maybe this is a little negative of me, but I'm just assuming I won't be that thrilled with whatever they give us! It will get us by, and that's about all I'm expecting. Plus, it won't be a mac, so - boo hoo. 👎

I' am a little bit of a self-proclaimed computer buff and the only problem I see with the Gateways given to us is RAM. I would rather have about twice is much RAM than the 512 mb we were given. Aside from that, I use the computer they gave us as my primary computer.

RAM is the key, period! My gaming monster has 4 GB of DDR2 800 MHz and my mac both have 2 GBs. Fill your machine with as much RAM as possible, you won't regret it.

ahah oh man, 4 gigs?? Right now, on this system, I would settle for a gig. It's a duo processor but a celeron (so, it's already behind) and then they put in 512 mb of ram. It's like having a really fast processor and a tiny bus or really fast HDD and no cache behind it. I mean really, who opens up the hydrant and hooks up a garden hose?!?!

I filled my computer with as many jellybeans as possible. I regret it.

Well yeah, regular jelly beans are known to cause serious issues. I loaded mine with JellyBellys and it was so much faster (Peach and Banana cream pie are the best for Mac's while the buttered popcorn seems to keep PC's running if only just barely).

This is the problem with most pre-built computers (of course I'm talking about non-Mac machines).😉

I purchased my own ram and to be honest, I love the computer they gave us. I haven't had any problems with it thus far and I use it probably 15 hours a day everyday (It's on at least). Just my $0.02.

Easy fix, spend the little amt. of cash it takes, and buy more RAM.
Hell, they'll even put it in for you here at the help desk.

So we can crack the cases?!?! AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEAH, I just has a mini-orgasm.

Ohhh, it only has two modules?!?! Orgasm just got smaller.

"Giggity Giggity Giggty......Alllll Right!"

Anyone know what 1 GB of RAM costs?

I suppose I could look it up myself but I'm lazy and don't know much about 'puters.

According to the board stats the slots can only support 512 mb so you can't fit a gb in. I am trying to locate a Gateway manual for the board but their website is begin a real *****. At any rate, 512 mb would be around 54 bucks. If anyone else has any better luck in finding me the specs on the M285-E gateway we were given stick them on here. What I got so far was two 512/667 slots.

Ask Soundman, but I think he has 2 GB in his. I am running 1 GB and it works great!

And DJ, I think you can get RAM cheaper than that website. Shop around.

its true "newegg" and "ZipZoomFly" are the ones to use.

Leave it to Gateway website to give the wrong information! 4gb sounds a lot better. Newegg is awesome, that is where I got most of the crap to build my last box.

This thread has really died down 👎 Has DMU just been waitlisting everbody at this point until some people drop multiple acceptances, or is the class getting pretty set? Jamers...Jbone I know your around here somewhere whats the inside word?

Jbone knows more about the inside word, I am just always around. From my own personal experience (I had 5 acceptances) schools don't know about multiple acceptances, so the answer is no. From what I have seen, we are interviewing some very competitive applicants this year (your class may actually be more statistically competitive than ours which, if you believe the big wigs, is the most competitive class ever at DMU). So, everyone stick in there, drink lots of beer and make fun of orthodoc.

😕 huh? whaa? somebody else at DMU has my name?! 😕 Wait a second. Fizban is making a decision, too, you know!

I just sent in my final 500 bucks guys...my deposit is final, so it seems like I will be joining all of you in the fall...dont get in too much trouble until then...go class of 2011👍
