There is a student in my class who will be moving out of his apartment on July 15th or so. He paid for the rest of the month, and is looking for someone to stay there for few weeks. If interested, PM me
 
Any exciting news from DMU? I haven't received my award letter yet, or even had my health requirments updated. My portal is boring.

Just FYI: pre-entrance health requirements are due today.

well i got my award letter today. i wish i felt a little better about it but...it's just a little crazy, in one day i almost doubled my debt.

I emailed the nurse about this because mine was going to be a bit late because of scheduling issues with my PCP, plus the fact that the lab tests would take a couple of days to get back to his office. She said that it would be ok, as long as I get them done ASAP. So for some of you that haven't finished them, it's ok as long as you let them know. And Boner, on the portal it states that it will take a while for you requirements to be updated on the site because it will take some time to go through them all.

I remember that now. My portal has just offered no excitement for me while at work. Luckily tomorrow is my last day, so I will no longer have to search the internet all day for things to keep me busy.

Whew... that's a relief. I tried calling today but couldn't get through. My labs still haven't come back yet either. I guess I'm calling again tomorrow.

My portal is really boring too. No financial aid for me yet. 🙁 The waiting game continues.
 
I got my fin aid award letter today. I finalized my fin aid loans with DMU last wednesday and my last name starts with an N if you guys are wondering where they are in the list...if they have a list.
 
Hi everybody! I just signed the lease for my apartment and I adore it. Hardwood floors and a garage...can't beat that. It is tiny, just a little one bedroom but it is going to be great.

I don't know any of you yet and I am not moving in until the third so I will miss all of the pre-orientation activities. 🙁 So be nice to all of us who show up on the first day and don't know anyone!

I can't wait for school to start!!!!!

congrats megs...i see your from the chicago suburbs, so at least I would know one chicagoan (I am front the northern suburbs)...:laugh:...now the only thing that remains is, Cubs or Sox?😉

Don't worry, from what I read on the 2010 thread, during the beginning of their semester all of the SDN folk sat in the same area for lecture. Nerds unite.
 
Anyone familiar with the furniture stores in DSM? I'm looking for furniture around the range of Ikea (boo to IA not having an Ikea or boo to Ikea for not having a store there). I've checked out Nebraska Furniture Mart which is somewhat comparable. Any suggestions would be great. 1 more month and counting....
 
Well, I finally got my home internet up and running. Whatdapho, check out Homemakers for furniture, my wife and I pickup a beautiful set for a good price.

We should make a get together night for us SDN DMUers.

I can now join the reward letter club for financial aid. I now know what it's like to be 54 thousand and change in debt. Got to tell you I don't feel any different. My last names starts with "R" for those of you wondering where they are in the list.

I second ya on that one! We made the big move this month also & I finally feel like I'm settled down & can go online & become loyal to the forums once again🙂

As for the furniture, well, I think Homemakers has an outlet close to hear & be sure to check out Furniture Row Outlet on Merle Hay Rd. but to be honest, Homemakers has much better quality to choose from.

Lastly, if anyone is curious about our Fin Aid award letters, I really don't think they're doing them alphabetically. My last name starts w/ "S" & I received my letter at least 2 weeks ago.

I suggested awhile ago that we should gather all the DMU SDNers and head over to La Pizza House. Beers and pizza pies all around.....and some onion rings.....this stuff is sooooooooo bad for you.....oh well. i can prescribe myself some statins🙂

mmmmmm...statins. My wife and I will be in town on July 18 or 19, depending on which day we decide to leave. I can't wait to drive through Atlanta in the 16 foot truck with car trailer on the back 👎
 
What service provider did you use and how much is it a month? I need to get mine set up as well!

Mediacom charges ~$60/month for the first year for cable and internet. 2nd year it goes to $80/month. Every year after that it's $110/month.
 
Mediacom internet is pretty fast, but I've had a lot of friends that have been happier w/ the cheaper Qwest for ~$30 q month. Check it out if you don't want to go w/ Mediacom.

I went with mediacom's 60 buck cable/broadband, its really fast (clocked at 7.1mbs). Plus there is no contracts so if they send out a better deal just cancel and change to the new one.

I checked out quest as well all they had in my area was 128 kbs dsl and it was like 45$ because I didnt have phone service with them.

For what its worth...I have quest and I love it. Many people in my complex really hate mediacom. Just my $0.02.

No real complaints here about Qwest 3mbps DSL. Same as it was in Colorado; same speed every day, connection good. You can also get that price for life deal. 2 year agreement, etc. brings the price down even further.
 
Hey all, I've been reading but haven't posted in a while. I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the next month or so. My wife and I bought a house in Ankeny and will be arriving on around the 10th or 11th of July.

Does anyone have any suggestions/preferences to cell phone carriers out there. We have qwest home and cell here in Wa., but I dont know what the coverage is like out there.

Also, I see that there are some complaints about mediacom, but I'm trying to fiigure out what problems ppl are having with them. Is it just the cost? Or do they have service issues?

Anyway, I'll cya all in a couple of weeks.

BTW, is anyone else showing up with kids?

Hi! so.... I decided to go w/ Qwest for DSL & I'm very satisfied w/ the service. It pisses me off that there's no ATT service here in IA, but if you get the 2 year contract signed, the price is very decent for Qwest & the service is pretty good.

We went w/ mediacom for cable & they're running a promo where you get the family package (normally $52 I believe) for $20 per month for 6 mos. then you're free to change.

As for Cell phones, We're keeping US cellular since we've been happy w/ our plan for the last few years (from WI).

Lastly, yes, I have a kid. My son, Adam, is 4 & hopefully he'll be starting preschool right when we start school- it's quite an exciting time!

& can't wait to meet all you guys likewise 🙂

I have 2 daughters ages 4 and 5, one will be in 1st grade and the other probably won't make the cutoff to start kindergarten this fall (her b-day is in oct.), so we will most likely be looking for preschools too. I'll keep ya posted on anything we find that looks good.
 
I've had great service with Qwest DSL here in WA and I imagine it would be the same in IA (~$27/month). Cost all depends what service packages you can find. (i.e, cable, internet, phone)

Some of my friends at DMU have cingular for cell phones and they say the service works great. I currently have cingular and am not planning on changing my cell service.

By the way, I will be arriving in Des Moines around the 25th. I can't believe how fast that is coming up!

It was amazing. We travelled all the way down the coast from The Redwoods to San Diego, camping at various beaches along the way. We stopped at San Fran, Monterrey, Santa Barbara, Malibu, LA, Disneyland, the San Diego Zoo, and went hiking at Yosemite, plus many more that I haven't mentioned. I can't wait to go back. 😀

Great! I'm glad I could help. Here are some recommendations for restaurants:

High-end: The Waterfront Restauarant at Pier 70

Mid-Range (but affordable): Anthony's Pier 66 (my favorite - call (206) 448-6688 for reservations) or Anthony's Bell Street Diner (walk-in)

Low-Range: Ivar's Fish Bar at Pier 54 (next to the Ferry Terminal - a Seattle classic)

All of these restaurants have menus online that you can check out to see where you want to go. Have a great time in Seattle! (I miss it already. sniff 🙁)

10year, just to let you know my wife and I also live in ankeny and really enjoy it. Let me know if you have any questions about stuff around here or whatever. We have a 6 y/o, 4, and 18 months with one more on the way. PM me if you have any questions etc.

I've used a stan before, his eyes dialate, tongue swells, and responds to hundreds of drugs. Next we will be giving birth by mannequin.
 
Can anyone see their immunizations and health records on their portal page yet? I sent my stuff in a super duper forever ago long time....They still aren't posted. What is the deal-io.
 
I sent mine in over a month ago and still can't see it. If I recall correctly, we received an email stating that someone would be going through and checking to make sure all of our paperwork is in starting in the beginning of July, and then we will be sent an email telling us what paperwork is unaccounted for.

I sent mine in around the 2nd week of June and received an email earlier this week to ask me check my portal for updated record and accuracy. They said you could email them [email protected] for more info. Good luck! I'm done with mine. Just waiting for my FA 🙁

My roommates and I are actually looking for another roomie! We were going for a 3 bed/3 bath house, but ended up with a 4 bed/4 bath instead. Crazy, huh? The house is a lot of fun and I think we will be asking $350 plus utilities. (Splitting the house 4 ways.) It is HUGE, 3000 sq ft! We definitely weren't expecting that.

Anyone out there interested? If so, PM me and I will send you more info/pics.
 
Just curious as to the cost of a gallon of gas in Des Moines. It's about 3.15ish here in San Jose so I'm assuming (and crossing fingers) that it is a bit less in DSM.

I believe it was $2.79 yesterday, which is super cheap! And to make things even better, if you buy your groceries at Dahl's foodstores, you can get Dahl's Fuel coupons and save any where from 04 to 15 cents per gallon on your gas purchase. Either way, it's pretty decently priced around town. I think almost everything here is very cost efficient. 🙂
 
Back from Vegas. What an experience. We went and saw the Bodies exhibit and all I can say is, "wow!" If you live near a city that has a Bodies exhibition, GO AND SEE IT! It will blow your mind. It really got me pumped for Anatomy.

So, orientation in 4 weeks from Monday! Class in 5 weeks from Monday!

Body Exhibit was awesome!!! I saw it in San Diego. It's amazing the types of techniques they have for body preservation. I was a bit overwhelmed because it sort of gave me a glimpse of what we'll be doing in anatomy...ugh!!!

Yup...2 more weeks until the big move and all the orientation shindigs. See you all there.

Ended up winning 👍 Played roulette the entire time and made enough money to pay for cab fare around town. Also got a bunch of free drinks, which adds up considering anywhere on the strip charges $6.00 for any domestic beer and $9.00 for a liquor drink. A big frozen drink at the pool cost $17.00 😱
 
I saw a decent flick the other day relating to med school and gross anatomy, and I think that all 1st year med students should see it 😀 It's called "Unrest" and you can find it in the horror/thriller section 😉
