Not to scare anyone, but lets get it out there

If you start the thread, then you should probably contribute.

I thought it seemed early for this, but then I saw last year's thread, which was started Sept 7, 2010.

I'm always fascinated by the construction of these "official" threads, and how much they stick to a common formula. My biggest question: How do you know how many asterisks to put in the thread title?

Sure, five on each side seems like a safe bet, and was the chosen approach for the 2010-2011 thread, but integrated plastics seems to think they only need 3. This rocked my world, but I was brought back to sanity by the Pediatrics forum, who stayed conservative with the industry standard.

....but then, I saw that the ER forum went rogue and started an official thread without any asterisks at all! Instead, they employed the more modern ALL CAPS technique. Now I just don't know what to believe....

I will contribute....once there is something on my end to say........
Yea, I was puzzled about the asterisk number.........5 on each side is a safe bet........unless someone thinks otherwise? Maybe we should vote..

Why in the world would you apply to 200 programs with those scores? FMG?

I have 2 friends that have both steps in and have gotten interviews. one was a 245/252 and the other was a 229/231. The latter submitted this morning and got an interview about 2 hours later. I've gotten no bites yet but my step 2 isn't in, it's pending.

Carib US IMG.

Well at least I cut back on checking my email to about 3 times a day. I figure most of my interviews will probably come later in september and october, being a USIMG. Might as well just concentrate on rotations.

Did Jackson Pollock have to explain how many times he flung his brush at the canvas and why? I think not.

Holy benjamins batman!!!!

Holy benjamins batman!!!!

Actually that is a common misconception. Pollock never flung paint onto the canvas. He would lay it down on the ground and drop the paint onto the canvas/ pour it on from the paint can.

Duly noted. The point remains.

Ut knoxville just sent out some invites

Pretty quiet on the Surgery front? I haven't heard anything yet. I heard it was later, but all of my friends in other fields are getting 3-5 interviews already so the stress is starting to begin.

The only communications I've received have been a few "Thank you for your application" messages, and an email from Penn requesting I fill out a secondary. No interviews yet, though I'm hoping it's still early. [Not to mention our Surgery Chair doesn't complete his LORs until mid-month, so that's not been uploaded into ERAS yet.]

Still having nightmares of zero interview offers, however!

It's normal to be nervous, but I urge you all to be patient. It is still very early to be getting general surgery invites. They will start rolling in at a greater speed towards the end of September.

Be encouraged that nobody is chiming in with a big list of invites. I promise that as soon as invites occur, SDNers will come from everywhere (new accounts, inactive accounts, etc) to share their good fortune.

Also, please remember that the first invites may not necessarily be the best. I still encourage you, though, to schedule interviews early on, as they can fill up....

I'm not sure how this list should be done but...

Mayo Arizona (categorical)- contacted for interview via e-mail 9/12
dates offered were 11/18, 12/2, 12/15, 1/6

Programs have a lot of applications (>400) to review before they start offering interviews. The majority of interviews won't come out until the end of September or beginning of October. Take some deep breaths!

My advice do not just jump at the first couple of interviews you get, most programs offer interviews on the same days, you will need to be make choices as you get into October or November as programs offer spots and only have the same dates available.

If you were given the right advice by your advisors (and you listened) it will usually work out.

Not to make anyone worry, but I got two cat. gen surg interviews today.

The list is not to announce the fact that you got interview invites, but to list the programs that have sent out invites, when they sent them out, and what dates were available for interview.

I was just invited for an interview, but was told it was for categorical or preliminary, as that is how they do their interviews. Just curious, how do you know your interview is for categorical?

Thanks!

Dartmouth and University of Arizona also sent out interviews. Heard through one of my friends who applied to both but I haven't been able to get my hands on the interview dates.

Man, when did you all apply?!?!

I can't imagine that these are the only offerings...my school didn't have transcripts up and half of the letter of recs arent in.

Gotta be more invites for these places, don't you think.

I hope these programs will send out more batches of invites! My school doesn't upload transcripts until late October, and our surgery chair hasn't started on his LORs yet (he typically writes them the first week of October, despite students begging him - year after year - to start earlier).

I hit submit in ERAS on September 1st anyways, just so I'd at least have my part done. I know some programs won't review an application until a chair's letter is in (or there are three letters uploaded), but I guess others will review an application that is "incomplete," and send out rejections/invites without all materials submitted.

Everyone I've spoken with says it's still very early for invites, though, so I'm not losing hope - and neither should you!

That's interesting about your school. Ours was on us to submit our applications on September 1st, and made sure everything was uploaded (transcripts, letters, etc), so pretty much everyone in my class had ours in on day 1.

But it's definately not time to lose hope, the majority of schools haven't sent out invite/reject letters yet and won't be for a while.
