hey kids,

I just got accepted to the SMP a couple weeks ago, and barring any miracles, ill likely be headed to Georgetown next year. just wanted to introduce myself to my potential classmates cause everyone seems really cool...

and just for those interested, I was complete 2/2 but they didnt have my mcat scores til 2/15, then they forgot to forward my application to the SMP office until around 3/13, got acceptance email 3/20 and snail mail acceptance a week later. i got a 29Q and a 3.75 (3.79 BCPM) from UCI so my stats are kinda opposite the usual SMPer, but they took me anyways so no complaints here..
 
A question for all of you current or prospective SMPers...how are you financing this program? My parents definitely will not be able to help me with the cost of tuition and living expenses in any significant way, and I'm a tad nervous about how far back a GT degree is going to set me.
 
Im doing all via loans unfortunatly, fed loans will get you 18.5K you have do the rest (32K) through private loans, contact the university or your local bank about those and be sure to mention your financing a degree in a health care related field (slightly better loans.) It stings a lot, but if it gets you into medical school...

Yeah, I am pretty nervous about the massive loans too. Still paying off my undergrad loans. But there are no other way. I guess this is the true meaning of Med School or Bust.
 
Accepted last week (as a re-applicant) with a 3.45 gpa (3.25 BCPM) and 32Q MCAT.

My re-application included grades from spring semester of my senior year (3.94 GPA - helped to counter a crappy fall semester during my senior year), a very well-written personal statement that was SMP-specific (as opposed to the AMCAS copy-and-paste) and an LOR from my current job (teaching high school science).

Wondering if there are any other re-applicants to Georgetown's program out there. I'd be interested in your experience either way.
 
Speaking of financing this (well, not really) the deposit is due the 15th? So, I should send it in now?
I'm still waiting to hear from BU's MAMS programs and from at least one med school post-interview. Aaaargh..... I have no point. I just want to vent. Now I need to sell some, uh, spooge or something to pay for this deposit. Sigh....

Congrats. I'm just about to submit my personal statement. However, I didn't address going to SMP directly. Rather it was more general. My assumption was that it was self-evident why one would want to go. Was there a particular reason that you didn't use your AMCAS essay?

Because it was my second time applying to the program (actually, re-activating my previous year's application) they requested an updated statement of purpose. I basically wrote about what that I had done in the off-year made me a better grad school & med school applicant. (Plus, I think it was just better writing than my AMCAS PS.)

has anyone got a housing situation figured out yet? Ive been going mad looking online and havent had any luck. Im moving over early (May) to spend the summer out there, so I guess Im a little more pressed about it than most.
 
My deposit check: to whom do I make it out? (aaargh! I tried so hard to not end that with a preposition!)

Georgetown University is what I put on all my checks to the school.

A few of my friends live here and I wish I did myself. It's cheaper than most places. The GUTS bus runs very frequently so it's easy to get to/from school. Look it up and see if they have places open.

Don't worry about not having a car. It's not gonna be a problem. The only time that you will REALLY need a car is the first week you move in when you'll have to make multiple trips to Target or Home Depot or places like that. There will be a lot of ex-physios around (like myself) who'll be more than happy to help you guys out, give you rides and what not. In addition, between now and August, you'll be meeting a lot of classmates on the yahoo forum so you guys can help each other move in and stuff. If you really need a car, you can also rent one for cheap at the following:

Once you get to know your classmates, people frequently give each other rides to grocery stores and stuff. This is the least of your worries. Relax. Get your applications done and maybe read up a little if you have time.

CalBear - thanks for the shoutout for my turf 🙂

One warning on River Place apartments: there are four buildings in the complex and two of them, the East and West have central air/heat that runs constantly. What that means is that every apartment in the building is either heated all at once or cooled all at once. This is not a big deal too often, except for Late Spring and Mid-autumn when the heat is on (and you can't turn it off) and it is 70 degrees or more outside.

For that reason, if you decide to come to this complex, I would recommend living in either the South building (the air in your apt is always on, but you can control how much heat or AC it gets) or the North building (you can control the heat/AC *and* you can turn the air on or off when you want.)

Heck, in today's grammar world, it's nice to see someone at least try to follow the rules regarding prepositions.

provided i choose gtown over drexel, i'd probably live in rosslyn as well. it looked like a nice neighborhood and the walk over the keybridge to the gtown campus only seemed about 20 minutes or so.
 
hey wbg, I'll probably be moving there in early july...I am going there in May to try and find somewhere to live. Probably a studio or something. But if anyone is going to be there May 21-28, I'll be there too (with my mommy, she insisted).

I kinda know where I am going to live...close to school. I won't have a car either, just my bike. I am sure there is a resourceful way to transport groceries back to ones dwelling without having to carry them. Like a wagon.

Just got my acceptance email today. I was completed since 3/27. Unless a miracle happen, I'll be in the SMP program. Hope to see all you cool guys and gals in the fall.
 
So I was complete a while back, but they needed another letter of recommendation from a science professor so I mailed that one in. So it's been like a month or so. I have a 3.195 with a 3.12 or so BCPM GPA and a 30Q. Just wondering if anyone else has waited this long to hear a response and if so, are you calling to check up on your applications? They told me by the end of April I will hear a response.

I'm in your same shoes. My application was completed a month ago with roughly your same numbers, slightly lower BCPM and slightly higher MCAT. I guess we just gotta keep waiting!

probably a month or so, but looking at your profile, you have pretty good grades, you should get into a medical school this round. I wish you luck, and also to free up a spot at SMP. I was reading some posts where people have like 3.4's and a 36 on their MCAT. Why in the world are you applying to the SMP with those scores? You're wasting 50,000 dollars, because that's a competitive profile for medical school admission. If I had those grades, I'd probably take a year of volunteer abroad, learn some valuable experiences and apply to medical school with all the knowledge and experience I have accumulated.

Yup w/ ur stats I would stay one more year in Sunny Cali b4 I kiss the weather good bye and head east. I would do a masters at a UC just to stay in school for a year (I know CSUF and UCR have 1 yr biology masters). Besides that most people with your numbers find out in a wk or so.

Hi there,
Look into Sheffield Court in Arlington. The GUTS (Georgetown University Transit Service) bus stops right next to this complex and the apartments are huge with great amenities like good fitness center, pool etc. This is definitely the place to live if you do not have a car.

Loads of good shops, clubs, restaurants in Clarendon (Short walk) too. Short walk to the Court House METRO stop and METRO bus stop next to the complex too.

If you don't have a car, this is the place to live.

First-time posting. Just wondering where most students get their loans from to pay for the program. I'm assuming most people get the max from Stafford but what is the next best option?
 
Got the email from Cabi that I'm under review as of today and should hear back in 4 weeks. I had thought the complete date on the website was the day that I was complete in the SMP's eyes, but I guess I was wrong. I'm already starting to feel indecisive with these programs, and I've only gotten into two! I'm starting to worry that I'll choose the wrong one, mess up in the program, and my chances for med will be over.

well, at least you're keeping an optimistic outlook.

on a more serious note, when making my choice between drexel and georgetown, i decided right off the bat that wherever i ended up, i'd be just fine. it makes the decision a lot easier.
 
I got into Georgetown SMP!!! OMG, I can't believe it. And I only got the notification of being complete yesterday!
 
Is anybody getting no response from Georgetown? I still haven't received an e-mail from Cabiness saying I'm complete or under review. All my e-mails have been with Amy Richards and I'm beginning to think she is playing with me. I was complete on the website 3/22.

I want to know if anybody else is in the same boat?
 
I was complete on the 27th according to the website but only got the email from Cabiness today that I was under review. I emailed Cabiness about a week ago to ask about my app...so maybe that helped.

Chaeymaey, Congratulations on all your acceptances! I'm very happy for/jealous of you.

I got the email from Ms. Cabiness that I should be hearing back by end of April. I was at the Open House, and fell in love with the program/campus/everything. I hope I have good enough credentials though...

3.3 Overall, 3.1 BCPM, 27Q
 
im so excited for all of you who got in. i just got my acceptance today too...and its wierd bc i my app was only considered complete one week ago. but now im so torn because i already committed to BU. i really don't know what to do!

also is anyone here from socal/LA area planning to go to the SMP? id love to get a list started or something 🙂
