Yup w/ ur stats I would stay one more year in Sunny Cali b4 I kiss the weather good bye and head east. I would do a masters at a UC just to stay in school for a year (I know CSUF and UCR have 1 yr biology masters). Besides that most people with your numbers find out in a wk or so.
Good luck to you with your application!

Are you sure that CSUF and UCR have 1 year biology masters? I looked up both schools and it seems like their programs are the standard 2 years with thesis.

I recieved my e-mail acceptance about 3 weeks ago, but have yet to recieve an official letter from the graduate school. The e-mail I recieved said to wait at least 4 weeks to recieve the official offer of admission, but I was wondering how long it has taken other people to recieve something in the mail.

For me, the due date was on the letter that came with the deposit form. I got my acceptance in the middle of march, though. Right now it looks like I'll be going and yes, my tab is open but I'm worried you're going to bankrupt me!
I hope you get in to drexel because I don't want to be poor because of you.

Still haven't gotten anything from Georgetown yet and my computer status thing says that I was complete on 03/23. What's the usual turnaround time for this here school?

my computer status also said 3/23, but I got the email from cabiness saying that i was complete on 4/18, and I got the acceptance 4/19 even though i was told it would take 4 weeks.

Zahque,

I guarantee you that I will bring a new level of suckiness to the SMP application wait-time. All my applications are timed on a different scale...I don't know the exact units but it's along the lines of glacial movement and about as much fun as watching paint dry.

It seems really hard to find housing near Gtown. It looks like most of the housing is in people's basements.

Does anyone have a link to the current SMP students Yahoo group (not the applicants one)?

Hey chaeymaey,

Glad to hear you got into the SMP!

So as for housing, there aren't any apartment buildings in the immediate area. It's all townhouses. There might be a few apartments as you get close to Wisconsin Ave, but they're kind of far away. There are apartments in Dupont Circle and across the Key bridge in the Rosslyn area of Arlington. The GUTS shuttle bus runs between the metro stops at both of these locations, and the school. Otherwise, it's a basement apartment or sharing a townhouse.

I am currently in a basement apartment. I would recommend against it, mostly because I feel like a troll living under a bridge or something. It is very convenient though.

how is with parking in the area? do buildings have garages or street parking

Parking is very inconvenient.

GUSOM parking garage is $25/day. Parking garage on other side of campus is $12/day if I remember correctly. 😱 There are no semester parking for students.

Near medical campus building, there are 4 hour meters at 75 cents/hour, usually from 7 am until 6 pm. BUT on Resevoir Rd. (the main road in front of the medical campus) make sure to check the times that you are allowed to park there. Fine for parking in no parking zone during rush hour is $100. I know because I got one. :scared:

Street parking, where there are no meters, 2 hours is the limit. You will either move your car every 2 hours or pray that there will not be a ticket.

There are street parking for residents (zone 2) that you will have to get permit from D.C. MVA. But it is for residents only, i.e. your car has to be D.C. registered and your driver's license has to be from D.C. and your address has to be in Georgetown area.

The best bet is to rent a parking spot near campus behind someone's house. The current rate is about $150/month although I have seen an ad for $175/month. If you are going to share a townhouse then you should work something out with yor roommates.

How appropriate...a parking bureaucracy in the nation's capitol.

Parking? In D.C.? In Georgetown . . . rotflmao

To add more weight daeojkim statement I just want to add why DC is so anal about parking. You see this is the only metropolitan city in the nation that does not have a state government to support it, in theory the federal government is supposed to support it in the same function, but they dont. Therefore DC must rely only on local levels of revenue, which includes property, income and sales tax and parking tickets. The latter two can be used against tourists, which is where they focus on. The meter maids/police are incredably vigilent when it comes to parking and ruthless, it sucks.

thanx
$100??? thats is half my car's value

Well, I finally got my acceptance today....go me. Barring some unforseen miracles, I'll see the lot of you there.

Wow, Rayhan's going! Going to G Town will be like living a real-life SDN world.

Rayhan, I'm all conflicted:
on the one hand I want you get into SLU, but on the other you're my favorite person (yes, you're a person behind that avatar!) on SDN and I'm probably going to be at the SMP this fall, too. (My third hand is gently massaging my buttocks...)
Oh, the first hand wins: I still want you to get into SLU, you know, because it would make you happy (the third hand won't stop...).
Enough, I'm done with SDN....bye now!

go rayhan! now the acceptances will start rolling in

i dont know if this has been discussed before, but is there any use to the degree you get through SMP? can people tell you got it in one year?

this is the story of seven med school rejects, picked to complete a one year post-bac.. to find out what happens when people stop being polite, and start studying five hours a day.

seriously, let's all share one big townhouse.

Jebus,

 If you offer one of them massages then I'll withdraw from SLU and definitely pack my bags for Georgetown.

That's right. Look for my hideous mug at a Georgetown Phyiso class near you.

zahque said:

I realize this wasn't aimed specifically at me, but I'm looking for housing and living with a buncha other physios would be pretty solid. I'm heading out east in May to look for places; ideally I wanna sort out my living sitch asap.

Yeah, housing's pretty tough to find in DC. LOL to Zahque's reality TV premise. I think it would be a good show. I did win "most likely to be on a reality TV show" in the SDN Pre-Allo most likely's.

How late can I delay looking for housing? I kind of want to wait out some of my waitlist until around Mid June before looking for housing in DC. Is that a good idea?

Allthough it wasnt easy, I found a place 2 weeks before the start of class (aka mid July) I wouldnt suggest it, but if you're on a waitlist (as I was) then it may be necissary.

Touchdown, do you think that it's common for physios to make A's in the program? What I mean is, do you find that the med students are aiming to pass, so there's less competition b/t them, making it easier for a physio who studies hard to make A's? Also, do you think that having 3.5+ in the program is considered doing well, or is there a different cutoff? What's considered "studying hard": 4 hrs/day, 6 hrs/day? I just want to make sure that if I go into G Town's program I will be able to make the grades that I need to go to med school.

do you think that it's common for physios to make A's in the program?

Outside of our grad classes (which you should be able to get an A/A- no problem) As are very difficult. The most generous curve we have had is A going to 88, you are not going to ace every class, the goal of most of us is to get a B+ or higher (84ish) which is in the top 40% of the class. Of course we have our share of gunners, but expect to get some Bs, the program is hard but the most important thing you need to do is get the degree, all that you need for that is a 3.0 which is very managible.

What I mean is, do you find that the med students are aiming to pass, so there's less competition b/t them, making it easier for a physio who studies hard to make A's?

Sadly no, there are lots of gunners in the G-town class and there is also a lot of smart people, A cutoff is usually 100 to 90-88, A- cutoff: 88-86, B+: 86-84, the B is two standard diviations below the mean (somewhere in the 70s.)

Also, do you think that having 3.5+ in the program is considered doing well, or is there a different cutoff?

3.5 is doing very well, those are the people competing for Georgetown spots (of which I am not one of them) if you have below a 3.5 though its not the end of the world, I had 5 interviews that have panned out as 1 rejection (state school,) 2 waitlists (1 unranked at the moment, 1 top 1/3rd,) and two pending that I think at the worst are going to be waitlists.

What's considered "studying hard": 4 hrs/day, 6 hrs/day?

5 hours a day on a non test week, test week its vastly increases to the point that your day only consists of sleep, eating, studying, going to class and wasting time on SDN (we have a test tomorrow) is the norm. Going hard core would be having a test week schedule all the time.

I just want to make sure that if I go into G Town's program I will be able to make the grades that I need to go to med school.

If you are admited then the directors think you can do it, remember out of everyone who starts the program 80% end up in medical school. Of those other 20% the majority of them decide that medicine is not for them, very few are not able to keep up and be kicked out of the program. You simply have to devote that year entirely to the SMP, dont worry its not all that bad. Ive been able to have some fun this year too, and June/July is going to be a blast!

for those of you looking for housing and without a car, I lived on 35th St and S St and its ideal...5 minute walk from safeway (grocery store), 2 minute walk to starbucks, and a 10 minute walk to class...rent was $1402 for a small 1BR that I shared with another physio...dunno if there's any rooms available but PM me if you want the landlord's name and #

i just found out that i was on the waiting list, anyone know how much movement there is?
