Official: Georgetown SMP Class of 07

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So is everyone who is enrolled in GT SMP submiting the 2007 AMCAS? Wouldn't it be better to apply after you get your grades from the SMP program? Doesn't make sense to apply with what I have now, seeing how I have a low GPA, and will simply be stating in my AMCAS that I am in the SMP for the upcoming year without any grades in the program yet... Any thoughts from previous classes or anyone else?

i think the whole point is to avoid glide year.

When to apply depends on your personal circumstances. Many people enter SMP programs having already completed one or two years of post-bacc at the undergrad level, or may have applied in a past cycle and gotten waitlisted. These people are not at a severe disadvantage by applying during their SMP year. If, however, you do not have a strong upward trend in your gpa, and no post-bacc experience prior to SMP, it may be better to wait.

i have verizon, and during my trip down there i had more than a few dropped calls while walking around the georgetown area.

Verizon and T-mobile work in the metro, cingular doesnt (at least it didnt when I lived there).

i dont get it, i am waitlisted in the smp. i have 3.1/3.1/34 mcat ???

When did you apply? The program has rolling admissions, my bet is that you fell victem to a late application.

Do not wait until you get your grades from SMP. It will be too late and it will diminish your chances from most schools no matter how well you do in SMP. This is from personal experience. I waited to fill out for secondaries because I wanted for my grades from SMP. I think I would have gotten more interviews if I had applied early.

What I would suggest to do are

1. Make a list of schools that you want to apply, especially those schools that look favorably at Georgetown's SMP programs (Drexel, NYMC, etc...).

2.Then have the secondaries and primary ready. (You can find all the secondaries questions from the pre-med forum). You do not want to be spending time writing your secondaries once your start SMP. So have them ready to submitted before you start SMP. Start working on them now.

3. About 4 weeks before SMP starts, submit your primary. Then as soon as you are notified from each school to apply for secondaries, send the ones that you already have completed ASAP. Having a large gap between their notification and when you complete secondaries has some reflection on you.

The reason that I would suggest #3 is because when you begin SMP program, Dr. Myers will send each one of the school that you are applying a letter explaining that you are in SMP program and tell them more about this program. Emphasizing that you will be taking classes with medical students and that your grades reflect your performance among medical students. This is basically to tell tha ADCOM to wait until your grades fro SMP are available if they had thought of rejecting you.

You do not need to fill out secondaries for Georgetown until December, so wait to fill out for Georgetown. Mostly because you will have more to write about once you spend time at GUSOM and write a better statement.

BTW, a tip filling out the primary if anyone is not doing this. In the section that you fill out the EC, award, etc... Use this space for comment to explain more about the experience. Not only about what you did, but also what you felt about it, what you learned, etc. This was an advice given by my advisor at GT and it worked out great because I had more space to write about myself in the personal statement rather than explaining about EC that I have done.

Hope this helps.

i was complete march 14th. is there any way i can increase my chances of being accepted if the waitlist moves (which i doubt it does)?

I've actually heard (from Dr. Myers and from matriculants) that the waitlist actually moves quite a bit since a good number of people are accepted to med school off waitlists during the summer.

Thanks! I guess I better get cracking on that AMCAS then eh?

Hi, I am planning to go to DC next month to look for an apartment. Anyone can recommend any cheap hotel/motels in area?

Thanks

is anyone buying a laptop or computer before the SMP? I'm a little cautious to do so because I know some med schools require a certain computer and I don't wanna end up buying a new one next year.

Georgetown does not require for you to buy a specific laptop.

if u dont mind me asking, when did u apply and what were your stats? i just submmitted everything last week and i was wondering what my chances are at this point.

hey guys sorry long time no post. Anyways, I got THE magic call up (you know what I mean) so I won't be going to Gtown...but you guys will be fine next year, and to all the waitlisted posters, I am emailing Cabiness right now to let her know. Peace!

i was looking at the GUTS schedule on the transportation website and i see the buses run from 5am-midnight mon-fri. i was wondering how often the buses come to dupont cirlce and rosyln. also how long does it take for the bus to get to campus from these locations. i also see that these buses stop weekend service now that school is out of session, except SMPers are still going. is this an inconvenience to anyone? when the buses are going on the weekends during school how oftern do they come around? also is the distance from dupont or roslyn bike-able if i need to come to campus on the weekend? thanks in advance for any help

Few months before our school year begins! What is everyone up to? What should we be up to? 🙂

All youve ever wanted to know about the GUTS bus but were afraid to ask:

1. The GUTS bus runs regularly every 20 mins with departures from campus and the metro stops on the hour, 20 and 40 after. During the morning rush, the service is expanded to <10 mins between busses.

2. The trip from Rosslyn to campus depends enirely on the Key Bridge traffic, it can take 5 mins and it can take 15, really it depends. The non rush hour Dupont trip takes 10-15 min (I dont ride this one as often)

3. I never go to campus on the weekends, the bus only runs on Saturday from like 10-8 and it only runs once an hour. Its an inconvience if you cant study outside of a library, but the walk from Rosslyn to the school is 20-30 min so its dooable (obviously on a bike very dooable, but you do have to go up a steap incline to get to campus from the river.) Dupont is much further and you have to zig zag through more city streets, if you plan on biking I suggest finding a place on the Blue or Orange line to allow access to Rosslyn.

I don't know about the other people around here, but I am just relaxing. I am squandering what's left of my money on comic books....just bought the entire run of Doom Patrol and Animal Man, so that should keep me busy for a while. I am also planning on taked a trip to DC Mid-June, to stake out a place to live...it doesn't have to be fancy...hell...even a box will do. Maybe, I'll live out of my car for that 11 months, taking roadie showers and using restaurants to answer call of nature.

Hah! Now that's life experience you can't buy.

Tommy,

I remember asking this same question a year ago - I was thinking I should study... get a head start on the classes or something. I remember every single SMP at the time gave me the same advice: "take the summer off... relax." I thought they were crazy. I was going into this program and needed every advantage to do as well as I could.

Now, I'm a year wiser, I'm through the program (almost) and my advice to you is: "take the summer off... relax."

There is really plenty of time to work as hard as you want to while you're here. Enjoy yourself this summer. Earn memories that you can call on during this next year. They will remind you of why you are doing this to yourself 🙂

Good luck!

For the summer the only thing that I would recommend doing is finishing AMCAS application. Both primary and secondary.

Other than that relax, go to the beach. Get a nice tan and work out. Chances are you will lose it all after spending so much time in the library / dungeon.

Enjoy the summer! There is absolutely no reason to do any work ahead of time. The year is going to be a long and hard, though in the end highly rewarding, year for you. Its best to save up as much energy as possible and be as fresh as possible when you start.

If I were you I'd spend the summer doing whatever it is that you enjoy, and perhaps finding an activity that you truly love, and that you'll be able to do in Washington D.C. to unwind. Running through the parks and trails in the D.C. area is amazing and I've spent a great deal of time, when I've had the time, running around D.C. Its a great way to unwind and shed the stress that is inevitable during your physio year.

Congratulations to all the people who got into the SMP program, and good luck to all you who are still waiting. You'll love the program if you put your heart into it, and in the end you'll be rewarded.

I got an acceptance email today woohoo!!! I'm almost 99% sure im going to go for the SMP program............. With a 29mcat and a 3.45 science and overall undergrad qpa, should I sign up for the august mcat to try to get a score over 30???? Any past smp'ers now in medical school or applying to medical school now have any insight on this? Thanks all!

As a current Physio. I'm not sure if I would retake the MCAT. Plenty of people in the class have been successful with 28 or 29 MCATs this year, and I'd assume in the past. Your undergrad GPA isn't too bad either, so if you work hard and do well in the program you stand a really good chance of getting in without a glide year. Your grades at Georgetown will overcome the average MCAT and your undergrad performance doesn't seem to indicate disaster by any means. I probably wouldn't burn myself out retaking it. Spend the time relaxing this summer and get your AMCAS in early (listing all the Georgetown stuff as pending on the transcript section and remember to check off that a Georgetown transcript isn't required for verification). If you get your AMCAS in and get in as many secondaries as possible you'll have a vastly better first month since you can just focus on the classes.

ABTornado, how are the med school acceptances coming so far for the physios? I'm still deciding between Gtown and EVMS, and it would be a big help if I knew how successful the physios are this year.

AB may have different info from different people, but what I've heard so far says we're probably at about 40% of the class at least right now. That's with probably 10 more Gtown acceptances to go (some of those will be to students who have not been accepted anywhere yet) and all of summer wait-list movement to occur.

We're probably going to hit at least the 50% first year number (which is in line with past classes) and maybe exceed it a bit.

Imrep said the numbers as far as I've heard, so I've nothing to add there. But in terms of choosing a program I can offer my opinion:

I think that regardless of how successful someone is this year, the program has been absolutely terrific. I've enjoyed the classes, most of the people in the program are really good people and quite friendly, and the SMP course directors including Ms. Cabiness are GREAT. I would highly recommend the program. I didn't look at EVMS or any other programs last year, I just applied to Georgetown and got in early and held that as a backup plan.

My experience though is that I was a third time medical school applicant this year with quite a few interviews in the prior two years (6 first time, 4 second time) and ended up on waitlists at all 10 of those interviews. Yes, it sucked big time to always feel like you were so close yet so far away.

This year I had 6 interviews and ended up accepted at 3 so far and 3 waitlists (2 of which are high priority or top tier waitlists). I didn't change anything about how I handled interviews except for one small feature. I owned up to the fact that I wasn't "all I could be" in college. I admitted to being immature and not working hard enough. But when you couple that to incredibly hard work in a SMP program with performance to prove it, you can show the committees quantitatively how capable you are and how you have matured and are now committed and ready to be a hard working med student.

I actually think the one benefit to the Georgetown program above and beyond everything is that I've worked my tail off but I've also had FUN. I go out one night a week (sometimes more though not near test times), and I manage to go to lunch with people, go running, go to movies, etc all the time. I didn't have to turn into a cyborg to get straight A's in the program. Now some people do turn into a library "Dahlgren Library" maniac, but ultimately I'm not sure if they need to do that to do well. As long as you take your studying seriously, make sure you do some every single day, and take the time to enjoy life a bit you'll do really well. To me being in a fun area (DC), at a great school (Georgetown), at a program that countless physicians have gone through (Georgetown), and having the ability to make some great friends whom I will undoubtably stay in contact for the rest of my life and career as a physician was what sets Georgetown at the top for me.

From what I've heard if you want to go to EVMS for med school choose that program as they admit a very high percentage of themselves. If you want to go to Georgetown or another school choose the Georgetown program.

well, from my experience, people who don't end up getting into med school during the physio year seem to have a lot better luck the following year. from what i've heard, at least 6 people from my physio class (2005) have been accepted to gw med this year. i also know that georgetown med has accepted a few people from my physio class this year as well. so, while maybe 50%-60% of the class ends up with acceptance(s) by the end of the physio year, a far greater percentage has med school acceptances by the end of the following year.

I created a poll on our website to track our application status this year, and with 2/3rds (94 of 150) reporting that the moment heres the results (first number is raw number, second percent: )

Just to second something ABTornado said:

this is my second year applying. Basically, the only difference in my app is this program. Last year, I didn't even get interviews, let alone a waitlist (take that, AB 😛)

This year, I had six interviews, I've been accepted twice already, waitlisted three times and waiting to hear from one other. This program does make a huge difference.

And ABTornado is absolutely right about studying. There are some people who basically buried themselves in their books. More power to them. I'm not a machine. I've had a great year. I've gone out pretty much every week, had fun, had friends visit from out of town, etc. When I work, I do work hard, but certainly its not been too bad. I'm not one of the 4.0's, but I'm pretty close.

This really can be a fun year, if you let it. Its generally a great group of people who all want to have fun and share the same goal. I'm excited because wherever I do wind up going next year, there will probably be at least 10 other ex-SMP's there with whom I'll already have a good friendship and share a common experience.

One key thing: pace yourself. As a friend of mine likes to say, "it is a marathon, not a sprint." It is hard to truly comprehend just how long this year really is. Don't burn yourself out early, because the courses seem to get more intense as the year goes on. Make sure you plan to have fun.

this question goes out to all current smpers who are re-applying. when you guys re-applied did you guys attach any new LORs besides the one you get from the SMP program? right now i have 4 LORs from professors and i havent really done anything with them since they have written my letter so i dont really have any updates. should i seek out new LORs or would the one provided by GU be enough? i didnt get any interviews last year but i think that is largly due to me applying so late (october). i hope applying in june this year gives me much better results.

does anyone have a working link to the smp survival guide? The one on the gt website seems to be a dead link. Thanks

Hahaha...what irony...survival guide link is dead.

I hope this post gets some responses

which medical schools are people applying for on the AMCAS? Are you guys matching your stats to schools or just apply and see?

Housing - what are people doing?

do any past/present physios have suggestions on where to live?

any new physios interested in sharing an apartment with maybe 3 or 4 of us?

just a quick question:

do you think, in any case, med schools would actually hold off on their interview invite/decisions on your app until they recieve your SMP grades? I guess what I'm trying to ask is have any SMPer's gotten accepted into med school early in the cycle BEFORE first semester SMP grades were available?

Hi All...There is such great energy in this thread! I can't wait to be a part of the crowd. I am wondering about how I can improve my chances for admission at this point.

I have a lousy undergrad GPA (way below 3.0 with serious mitigating circumstances), but I have a 3.83 grad GPA (from my master's, unfortunately not a whole lot of my grad courses counted as "science" according to AMCAS) and a 30R on the MCAT. I have talked to Ms. Cabiness a couple of times. Before I submitted my application, I gave her my details and asked her if I had a chance and she sounded very encouraging, so I went ahead and submitted. After she sent me the confirmation that I was under review, I called again and she sounded somewhat discouraging - telling me that the science GPA is what matters and the fact that I already have a master's makes my application to another master's program somewhat less ??? something. I am a little confused and worried at this point.

I haven't officially gotten any good or bad news yet, still under review. Any ideas of what I could/should do at this point? Should I write Dr. Myers to express my eagerness and advocate some more on my behalf? Should I wait until I get a decision? If I get rejected will it be too late to try to change anyone's mind, in other words, would they change their minds after rejecting someone or would I have to wait till next year? I've looked through the messages in yahoo groups and don't know if I should post any questions there (it looks like Dr. Myers reads those messages). 😕

I want to get into this program sooooooooo badly. Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated.

I think you should go ahead and write (or call or even set up an appointment to visit in person if you're in the area) to Dr. Myers and/or Dr. Mulroney. It would probably help to show why you want to the SMP and how you think it would help your application.

Apparently, if your overall undergrad GPA is below a 3.0 it is difficult to get in because they have to get a special exception thing from the graduate school in order to accept you.

:luck:
